Right on, Scootie. I appreciate the sentiment and the perspective.
I'd love it if Bauer did just as you suggest, had an epiphany, became inspired to be a better human being, and worked on just that project. I might even gain some respect for him under those circumstances.
But bad humans tend to remain bad. So, I expect Bauer not to be introspective, not to have an epiphany, and not be inspired.
I'd at least consider Portugal - even if it didn't work out, once you're a permanent resident as a retiree, it opens up options for other countries like the Netherlands, who are amenable to permanent resident retirees of other countries
Finland ( I have dual citizenship, Finland US), Italy, France. Indeed the missus and I are strongly considering doing so though tearing myself away from Memorial Stadium is a big ask.
Portugal for climate and healthcare, Egypt for historical value and hotter weather with no rain. Also 18.5 E pounds to the dollar. Renting a nice flat in Luxor would cost you $350 a month.
I second that. I used to live in Bordeaux, but I think if I went back I would go to Toulouse, is a bit bigger but not too big, and is a bit cleaner/prettier/nicer. It’s also a shorter hop from there to Germany/Swiss/Italy. The places you can go on a short weekend trip in Western Europe are mind boggling in variety, would be cool to be in a jumping off point. I am also not a beach or rural guy, would prefer a small city
Just returning from Belize. While there, I discovered you can become a resident if you are over 45 and have a pension of at least $2,000/mth US. Also, foreign investors can own property there outright, the same as Belizean citizens.
This team was particularly close and the parents were definitely all in as well. The pain has hit home fast for just about everyone on that team.
This is not the first time death has touched this group. One of the fathers died of heart disease in January 2009, just a few months after the boys won the Northern California championship as 11 year olds. Fred's sudden death was devastating at the time. It still hurts to recall. He died way too young.
9 years of all-stars and 7+ years of travel ball together means all the parents were also particularly close. I'd like to think there isn't anything any parent would do for any kid.
One of the granddad's (teammate lived with grandparents) passed away of cancer a couple of months ago. He was at just about every game.
James Grisom. He had one long TD vs Ohio State in Jared Goff's freshman year, and never heard from him since, other than that he lost his scholarship in the offseason.
Oh Man, no joke, spent an an hour walking back to where our car was parked chatting with an tOSU fan who couldn't believe he was our 3rd string running back.
My daughter had a hole in her heart when she was born. The doctors said oh no worries we will give her ibuprofen and it will close and I was like WTF are you talking about. But they did it and it worked and now she is 8 and is totally fine and makes fart jokes constantly
I'm getting sick of eggs and protein shakes every morning for breakfast. I've decided that "breakfast food" is an artifice and that I can have anything to eat in the morning - so I've focused on easy-to-prepare meals that are high in protein. I've been having TVP/turkey burritos (with radish/hot sauce/tomatoes sprinkled in later). High in protein, a bit of carbs/ fat and it keeps me satisfied until lunch.
Hmmmm... I guess I'm more trad here, light breakfast, black coffee and either oatmeal (if it's cold) or no fat yogurt or a piece of toast dipped in EVOO - or occasionally cake.
I do the easy egg cup...I take a ramekin, brush the bottom with EVOO, crack an egg and whisk, sprinkle shredded cheese of any kind, some hand-torn deli ham or pre-cooked bacon, and some chopped green onion and diced Cherub tomatoes. Microwave for 1:15...boom - easy omelette like do-hickey.
my wife used to go to Seattle for work & stayed in a hotel that catered to Japanese visitors to MSFT so she would eat Japanese food for breakfast every morning. Perhaps the only thing she misses about corporate work, I suspect.
It was the Japanese nationals who seeded this idea many moons ago. I noticed that they would absolutely load up on green salad at the breakfast bar. Later, when I visited Japan - I was like "aha, salad IS breakfast food for them; and it's lettuce-based rather than cabbage, and it's 'free' rather than being crazy expensive." Ever since then, I eat salad for breakfast is there's any leftovers from dinner because it doesn't last. My wife thinks salad-for-breakfast is a bridge too far.
I'm supposed to be on KRON4 this Sunday around 9:15 to talk about the Taiwanese American Cultural Festival (side note: for those of you in the Bay, come out to the festival on Saturday, May 7, in Union Square!)
Major League Baseball announced a 324-game suspension for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer on Friday, the equivalent of two full seasons, making it by far the most severe punishment handed out under the sport's domestic violence policy.
Bauer promptly released a statement announcing he was appealing the suspension, thus becoming the first player to appeal punishment through MLB's domestic violence policy.
"In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy," Bauer's statement read. I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives and I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings."
Yup. believe it or not. I always thought it would be shorter, like rest of the season or something like that. I'm guess they went all out knowing it will be shortened some on appeal.
Not sure if people discussed it here, but when the Guardians played the Angels a few days ago, the Cleveland social media person immediately though off "Guardian Angel" and Harambe (and I guess got a lot of social media engagement).
I'm glad they changed the name, but Guardians is kinda risible - I understand the process, and it really reminds me of a public art project, and not in a good way. What does a baseball team "guard"?
Cleveland just got waxed in a 4-game sweep in Sue from Swingers hometown of Anaheim...they’re basically Jose Ramirez, Shane Bieber and then 26 barely-replacement level players...
I am a reluctant Angels fan. I spent my first years in the OC and have remained loyal despite the organization's incompetence, the fanbase, and the fact that I hate OC and the color red. I keep waiting to flip my allegiance to Oakland, but their ambivalence to their own fanbase, winning and the region keeps me from jumping in with both feet.
The Giants were my NL team prior to '02, but that series made me draw a line in the sand. I really like those Roger Craig teams, and Candlestick had a very working class vibe. The A's crowds of the 80s and 90s were a little more suburban and I HATED those LaRussa squads (always an insurmountable barrier for some good, but not quite good enough Angel teams). That all switched with Pac Bell and the techies.
They had a GREAT draft. I feel like NY is a perfect destination for him. Maybe the franchise is turning the corner now that they cut ties with Gettleman. They still have a Daniel Jones problem.
Love the pick, as he should’ve gone 1, and then they got a good LT at 7 but tough to see them going anywhere until they get a QB. NYG declined to pick up Daniel Jones’ 5th-yr option, leaving him with lame duck status. He should get a bump with Daboll, but the turnovers and lack of situational awareness are major problems.
Maybe this year we will have a breakthrough at the position with Mavin, J Mike, etc. According to Rob in his subscribers-only article we are entering a Golden Age of WR's.
CT passes bill that allows student-athletes to use public school logos as part of NIL - in this case, UConn. Makes sense. Perhaps we can do the same for public schools in California?
It was only a matter of time before a college kid staged a kinda-holdout. What are the chances the Bears have an NIL agent? Or even an advisor? Cal is already soooooo late to this party, you wonder if they’ll just miss it entirely...
Reading the article, Florida law does not allow schools to be involved in NIL deals. Sounds like the guy bankrolling their NIL deals is just a well-healed benefactor, not an agent.
This is getting out of hand. I wonder if this sort of thing might lead to no compete clauses. Like, if you transfer, your NIL contract is cancelled and you cannot take another NIL deal while in the NCAA?
I have no problem with players doing this. Hopefully this will force the NCAA to actually do something in terms of creating a NIL policy. This is all happening because the NCAA fought this for so long and then decided to stick its head in the sand when they lost.
Found out a neighbor, fully vaxxed and boosted, tested positive last week. He never had any symptoms. Finally tested negative a couple days ago. He works in management at a hotel and has stayed there in isolation. He has a 100 mile race this weekend and is going to try it. He's tougher than me.
Since it's my first season for season tickets, going to the Select-A-Seat event with No 3, even though I'm just getting the cheapest seats since I won't be sitting there anyways.
Also going to grab lunch and then check out the spring game for a little bit.
NCAA Beach Volleyball field will be announced on Saturday. The championship will be expanded to 16 teams this year from just 8 teams in the past, so Cal should be making their trip to Gulf Shore, Alabama (not sure why it's still there for like the 4th or 5th year).
Those look like Sweet Tarts in the background of that needlepoint.
They do, don't they?
Trevor Bauer gets the 2 year banhammer without pay. Use it to think about what a gross human being you are, dirtbag.
https://www.mlb.com/news/trevor-bauer-suspension
Right on, Scootie. I appreciate the sentiment and the perspective.
I'd love it if Bauer did just as you suggest, had an epiphany, became inspired to be a better human being, and worked on just that project. I might even gain some respect for him under those circumstances.

*sigh*
I mean he's suing her for defamation? I hope it gets thrown out quickly and he has to pay her damages.
That was my brother's opinion as well.
Choose an actual feasible location, other than the US, where you would consider retiring.
County Tipperary, IRE
Not sure enough of the economics to be sure New Zealand would actually be feasible. Certainly Canada.
(not including southern France)
Canmore - cute mountain town like Boulder about an hour from Calgary and Banff
gorgeous mountain scenery and incredible access to skiing, hiking, biking ..
I'd consider France, or London. I could possibly make Italy work but it's really utter chaos as a place to live and I'm not sure I could do it again.
I'd at least consider Portugal - even if it didn't work out, once you're a permanent resident as a retiree, it opens up options for other countries like the Netherlands, who are amenable to permanent resident retirees of other countries
Netherlands. Or New South Wales, Australia (but maybe not Sydney because it's incredibly expensive)
I can certainly understand that - even if only because of the mobility alternatives to driving. That shitty weather tho...
Australia
Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico.
Finland ( I have dual citizenship, Finland US), Italy, France. Indeed the missus and I are strongly considering doing so though tearing myself away from Memorial Stadium is a big ask.
Portugal or Egypt
Portugal for climate and healthcare, Egypt for historical value and hotter weather with no rain. Also 18.5 E pounds to the dollar. Renting a nice flat in Luxor would cost you $350 a month.
Singapore, Thailand. I've never been, but will be checking them out later: Costa Rica, Panama.
South of France.
I second that. I used to live in Bordeaux, but I think if I went back I would go to Toulouse, is a bit bigger but not too big, and is a bit cleaner/prettier/nicer. I know you said you're not a beach guy, but I think Biarritz is a terrific little city.
Third that. My uncle used to have a place near Nice. I might prefer something a little more remote but anywhere would be fine honestly.
Aix-en-Provence is pretty ideal.
Just returning from Belize. While there, I discovered you can become a resident if you are over 45 and have a pension of at least $2,000/mth US. Also, foreign investors can own property there outright, the same as Belizean citizens.
Also, with the high percentage of folks speaking English, it makes the transition easier.
Deep sadness this morning.
A Little League teammate of Double D's (All-Star team) was the skier that died in an accident this past Saturday at Tahoe Palisades.
I have no words and find myself close to tears often.
I'm sorry <3
That's awful. My deepest sympathies to you and everyone else feeling that loss.
Sorry for yours and Double D's loss.
No 3 played with most of the same boys for all-stars for 9 years and as one of the coaches I love all of them as if they were my own boys.
Boy, do I understand that.
This team was particularly close and the parents were definitely all in as well. The pain has hit home fast for just about everyone on that team.
This is not the first time death has touched this group. Wow. That's like another family. Losing the granddad has gotta hurt. Sorry for the loss.
Thanks. They basically were my Louisville family.
Sending you and all concerned good vibes.
Thanks, Oski Disciple.

Seems like they can hold Crimea but Luhansk and Donbas would be difficult.
IMO they should cede Crimea, but receive some compensation for "improvements".
I agree with this. Probably no way to get Crimea back now.
Yeah we slept on that
Who is Cal's one-game wonder?
James Grisom. He had one long TD vs Ohio State in Jared Goff's freshman year, and never heard from him since, other than that he lost his scholarship in the offseason.
Kevin Moen
Leon Powe (in the NBA Finals vs Lakers)
Kevin Brown. Emergency fill-in quarterbacked Cal to the biggest Big Game upset (1986). Hadn't done anything before then. He graduated in the Spring.
Steve Levy, Big Game 2005.
& the Vegas Bowl.
😕
Devon Modster. Too bad he was playing against us when it happened.

Man he was electrifying in that game. His performance made everyone question why Tedford hadn't rotated him in more.
Why didn't we just run him on 4th down at OSU?
Sigh
He liked Sofele

I will, however, nominate Max Zhang vs Stanfurd.

Yeah, I was going to say are we talking about the same Jorge Gutierrez?
That did seem to be his coming out game though. Kinda like Amit Tamir against Oregon State, I think.

Why do you put it in quotes? Are you opposed to being less racist?
I'm glad they changed the name, but Guardians is kinda risible - I understand the process, and it really reminds me of a public art project, and not in a good way. What does a baseball team "guard"?
Nope. It's an improvement but I'm just not used to it yet. Could be a vestige of societal, systemic racism though.
Cleveland just got waxed in a 4-game sweep in Sue from Swingers hometown of Anaheim...they’re basically Jose Ramirez, Shane Bieber and then 26 barely-replacement level players...

Thibodeaux goes to Siberia-like destination in the League - the NY Giants
They had a GREAT draft. I feel like NY is a perfect destination for him. Maybe the franchise is turning the corner now that they cut ties with Gettleman. They still have a Daniel Jones problem.
The Giants are a lot of things but they are not a Siberia like destination. That would be Detroit and Cleveland.
5th overall and third DE picked? Several teams dun goofed

Reading the article, Florida law does not allow schools to be involved in NIL deals. Sounds like the guy bankrolling their NIL deals is just a well-healed benefactor, not an agent.
I'm entering the transfer portal until my compensation is increased
I think this kid has opened the box of unintended consequences. If you have a public hold out now, you're a higher risk of being a hold-out later.
This is getting out of hand. I wonder if this sort of thing might lead to no compete clauses. Like, if you transfer, your NIL contract is cancelled and you cannot take another NIL deal while in the NCAA?
