lawns in the desert are idiotic and plenty of environmental problems we have today are based around trying to make something work where it otherwise wouldn't

Sagebrush, native plants, cacti, succulents. Natural garden/no water.

Expand full comment

We just ripped out most of our front yard landscaping and replaced it with all succulents and cacti. The diversity in beautiful flowering drought tolerant plants that are available at nurseries now is truly amazing.

Expand full comment

i didn't rip anything out -- i just let my lawn die and now it's full of weeds and i love it but i have to believe that my neighbors do not like me for it

Like basing a water collection system off an inconsistent snow pack?

Expand full comment

like basing water allocations from the colorado river off a period of especially high precipitation and not revisiting that for about a century

Expand full comment

To say nothing of a population probably exceeding the capacity of that inconsistent snowpack.

This too

Expand full comment

eh, that would work minus the climate change.

Expand full comment

Sure, so would lawns

Expand full comment

Nah, lawns in Las Vegas were always dumb.

Good, lawns are such a waste of water in drought stricken regions

An Egyptian dish that is often had for breakfast, pronounced fool. It's essentially fava-based hummus.

A foul pita wrap can be had from street vendors in Cairo for 1-2 £E or 5-10 cents, slightly more with eggs.

We're seeing the backlash of decades of restrained compensation and competition for college football players, especially those at the skill positions.

This is actually evidence for an argument that college football should be something different altogether and that the NFL should form and fund its own minor league(s).

ICYMI: Makai Polk transferred to MS State thinking it would boost his draft prospects. He went UDFA to Ravens, same as Trevon Clark.

Let me get this straight, Cincinnati, Ohio and Houston Texas were in the ATLANTIC COAST conference. Geography has become meaningless.

It's AAC (American Athletic Conference) rather than the ACC. AAC is kind of what the Big East had turned into. ICYMI, San Diego State nearly joined the Big East before backing out.

I'm an Omaha native. It's still weird to me that Creighton is in the Big East. The Missouri Valley days were good. Nonetheless, the majority of Creighton fans (including me) are happy with the step up in average competition. Plus, Omaha loves the East Coast tourist money coming into Omaha for the away games.

Why would they be angry about the rest? They're getting what they want.

The logic Alito uses can be used to overturn almost anything, these people are the true radicals. Or extreme reactionaries.

Expand full comment

If you look at Alito’s opinions, they’re just that - his opinions. Not sure he’s ever taken a glance at the constitution.

I changed my running route to go by the SC. There were a handful of anti-abortion folks with a megaphone out front chanting "Roe must go" and other slogans. There was a similar number of pro-choice people with signs. The combined total was outnumbered by press people and all of those were outnumbered by curiosity seekers like me. Lots of Capitol police out across the street around the Capitol but I'm not there often enough to know if it was more than normal.

So much of the Republican agenda has built around overturning R v W for so long that you have to wonder what will happens if they get what they wish for. Opposition politics has worked for them. So what happens when you check all of your boxes? Horrible for humanity, but a good way to galvanize the left again headed into midterms.

Move on to the next group whose rights they want to remove: marriage equality, further erosion of the civil rights act and votings right act, etc. They'll always find some group to stigmatize and if they don't, they'll invent one (antifa, CRT, "woke mobs").

Expand full comment

The opinion explicitly outlines what they're coming for next. -- every other opinion that they don't consider to have been inherent in the constitution and hasn't been present since the beginning (even though abortion has been legal for 150 years and illegal for only 100 in the history of this country). Gay marriage, sodomy, birth control, interracial marriage , voting rights -- all of those opinions were cited in this opinion as being on the same general poor footing.

Expand full comment

Why stop at the constitution. They should just go all the way back to the Bible.

yes by mandating the forgiveness of debts, caring for migrants and widows and orphans, and establishing a preferential option for the poor, you know, like the bible says to

I don’t know, that sounds like a lot of socialism.

Well, now. I think you've hit on their operating blueprint.

The Bible is the first and true constitution.

They just move on and create the next big problem: CRT.

Of course they'll move on to other issues, but those aren't nearly the lightning rod that abortion is.

I think same sex marriage is for conservatives and CRT isn’t far behind.

I agree and to be honest the GQP isn’t done with abortion. They will not stop until they have passed a national law criminalizing abortions and restricting access to abortion nationwide. They are coming for places like California and NY next with the full force of the federal government.

i doubt it will happen, but maybe this will get left-leaning people to think about Supreme Court picks and Senate races more cohesively.

personally, that is the primary reason i pick a president/party but have run into few other people who do, especially on the left because top of mind issues are the issues themselves, not the Supreme Court

Expand full comment

overall i think the Republican strategy is to cast everything as a fight for "freedom of X"

but X is now "not X" or some convoluted version of it

so instead of "freedom to practice religion" it is "freedom to impose religion"
