Welcome to the DBD, a Cal Bears community bulletin board where one can chat about… pretty much anything. How about
A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (French: Un bar aux Folies Bergère) is a painting by Édouard Manet, considered to be his last major work. The central figure stands before a mirror. The art historian Jeffrey Meyers describes the intentional play on perspective and the apparent violation of the operations of mirrors: "Behind her, and extending for the entire length of the four-and-a-quarter-foot painting, is the gold frame of an enormous mirror. We, the viewers, stand opposite the barmaid on the other side of the counter and, looking at the reflection in the mirror, see exactly what she sees. Though Manet shifted her from the right to the center, he kept her reflection on the right. Seen in the mirror, she seems engaged with a customer; in full face, she's self-protectively withdrawn and remote.
October 1 @ The Hollywood Bowl -- Jack Johnson (this is more to tick the Hollywood Bowl off my list than for Jack Johnson, whom I've seen a couple of times)
October 5 @ Shoreline -- The Black Keys
...and I thought I had St Paul and the Broken Bones @ The Fox tonight, but it turns out it was LAST Friday 🤦🏻♀️
Recently scored tix for Wu-Tang Clan & Nas: NY State Of Mind Tour, Massachusetts on Sept 10th.
Big Wu-Tang fan ever since they came out in my early teens, and the last show I went to was a few years ago at a small venue, which beforehand I had decided was going to be my final time seeing them live.
But, that show was tainted by a drunk douchebag who wouldn't stop making noise and tried to start a fight with me pretty early on, so I was on edge the whole show. Cant let that be my last memory of the Wu, so this will be my final farewell to the Clan. And I've never seen Nas live, so that's an added bonus.
Nice. Wu have always put on good shows, and their vocals live are on par with how they sound on albums. Ive seen plenty of other rappers who are only good in the studio with live performances sounding nothing like what you're familiar with on the album. I suppose that's true for good bands in any genre.
Also, Wu tend to exude positive energy regardless of the content. (which makes it so out of place when a bad egg or two wants to act stupidly at one of their shows)
I had been going to see Beach Bunny on Sunday at the 930 Club in DC with my daughters, but the whole band just got COVID so they've postponed the show. Next up is an old man show by myself (Franz Ferdinand also at the 930 club in August) and the All Things Go one day festival in October.
I saw them in... I want to say 2016? Late 2015? - and thoroughly enjoyed it. Weird show though insofar as it was in a hall for orchestral type performances and at least half the audience was up in the cheap seats on the balcony. The band couldn't understand why people wouldn't just come downstairs, which I think demonstrated how little they understand an audience of white collar rule followers in the DC suburbs on a random Thursday.
I thought their last concert was back in late June of 1914. My great-great aunt & uncle, Sara and Jevo attended. I believe it was a pop up scene at a corner cafe.
Well originally I was going to get a Cervelo Caledonia-5 but after being on the waiting list for six months (since Christmas!) my LBS said "maybe it's time to look at other options" - so a couple of weeks ago I went in and plunked down my money on an Open Min.d (but not the California. I'm not made of money)
Have several significant repair projects (more than 1 day projects) to tackle. The ridiculous price of materials and fuel is going to curtail extra-curriculars until fb season, which will in turn entail several road trips.
Wife and I are taking a week at a ranch in Malibu, which only has vegan food and has hikes and exercise classes. Then for Labor Day we are taking the weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn.
She is taking her parents to Cabo for Memorial Day weekend, but I will be taking care of my mom post-surgery.
Looking for New England road trip recs. The Missus has announced she wants to fly into Boston and roadie in the region. Maine is definitely on the list (she said "I want to go to Maine"...ok) but I have never been anywhere up there so am happy to listen to any recs the fine posters of this board may have...
Looking through my IG Explore page, if I happen to click on a photo of an attractive asian woman, 40% of the time I'll see "liked by [j.lee's IG handle]"
you could describe a sort of a loop and start up Maine through to say Augusta, then take Rte 2 through places like Skowhegan to end up Gorham NH, looking at Mt Washington, and then either south through Central NH (I don't know that part of the state at all alas) or pick up 91 to take in the upper valley, maybe go to Hanover and the Quechee / Woodstock "metroplex" before heading back to Boston - that would leverage your suggestions about Maine but also get some inland northern NE flavor.
everyone likes to get popovers and jam at the Jordan Pond House, make sure you budget a few hours or have resv. you can also drive right up to it, try to find parking, etc.
one of the counter intuitive facts of driving around that neck of the woods is that it's often just as fast to drive on their poky country roads than take the interstate. I haven't been to Maine in ages and only ever went to my in-law's place on Deer Isle, which really is BFE. The good news is that it's scenic as hell along a lot of the coast so you don't have to go fight with all the tourists at places like Acadia, there are plenty of other small towns with lovely coastline and people who will sell you lobster 7 ways.
I'm building a list of local trails & scouting entry points to the C&O canal path so I have some kind of organizing principle for getting out of the house.
Bill Gates as monopolist and humanitarian? I can live with it. Add in the whole Epstein sex trafficking thing and that's a gigantic yikes no thanks.
Elon Musk is just an enormous arse. Some people would cash out and devote their full time to impregnating as many women as possible while making stupid 4-20 jokes, but no, he has keep taking the adulation.
I met Elon Musk when he was trying to sell Xdotcom back in 2000. AT the time he had no hair. However after that it began growing back at a prodigious rate. So his hair nowadays gets about a 15.
FET: My buddy booked us into the Portland downtown Courtyard Marriott. My flight was delayed, so I arrived into Portland late last night. I uber in, check in, grab what I thought was a beer from the minibar only to discover it was Underwood sparkling wine in a can. Tasted like I should be at a bachelorette party. Finish it and pass out. I awake early and open the drapes. There's a river in front of me. I'm thinking "huh? why is there a river downtown?". I scramble down to the front desk to figure out what the heck is going on. It turns out, I punched in the wrong Marriott into Uber and went to the waterfront Marriott. As it also turned out, my buddy booked the wrong Marriott, so I accidentally went to the RIGHT hotel. Unfortunately, I'm now in the part of town that's been overrun with homeless over the past 5 years. Portland is hurting pretty bad right now.
that's a magical series of coincidences. FWIW, my brother just started going back to work in downtown Portland & thought it was looking a lot better than when the locals were rioting around the federal building and the Trump admin was encouraging grab raids by goons.

we saw some Wu Tang vets at the Blue Note in NYC a few weeks ago. was fantastic show.

ha, ODB would be the only one getting a pass on such behavior.

Why aren't you going to Maryland Death Fest?
not really my cup of tea - I looked at the set list and was not surprised that I didn't know who any of them are.
Honestly there are only a few bands on that bill I would see myself.
Apparently this might be the last Maryland Death Fest.
You're saying it's dying?
Franz Ferdinand is excellent in concert. Saw them in Shanghai 4 years ago.
I saw them in... I want to say 2016? Late 2015? - and thoroughly enjoyed it. I heard they bombed
Garvilo Princip opened. And closed.
And the audience has aged out of rule breaking!
Summer Plans?
11 days in London, 2 in Paris, 2 in Florence, 7 in Radda in Chianti.
Man I hope my bike shows up soon. Also, get a job, you bum!
which bike did you get?
Well originally I was going to get a Cervelo Caledonia-5 but after being on the waiting list for six months (since Christmas!) my LBS said "maybe it's time to look at other options" - so a couple of weeks ago I went in and plunked down my money on an Open Min.d (but not the California. looks nice. we'll have to ride next time i am in town
Bike is ready - but alas, I cannot get over to the bike shop to pick it up today, and they're closed Sunday/Monday
Redonkulous Bear was the other cyclist around here.
Have several significant repair projects (more than 1 day projects) to tackle. The ridiculous price of materials and fuel is going to curtail extra-curriculars until fb season, which will in turn entail several road trips.
my recent bike crash has thrown some uncertainty into the plans .. but i am staying optimistic!
- 1 wk riding bike and watching Tour de France in the Alps
- 1 wk guided hiking tour in Swiss Alps
- 1 wk working remotely from Geneva or something
Wife and I are taking a week at a ranch in Malibu, which only has vegan food and has hikes and exercise classes. Then for Labor Day we are taking the weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn.
She is taking her parents to Cabo for Memorial Day weekend, but I will be taking care of my mom post-surgery.
Ojai Valley Inn is fantastic. Spent several nights there just after Easter.
I've heard of this place, supposed to be great for a reset
Well for one I have to know about it first. Will look into it.
lol let us know what you think
It's california history!

I think the Old Man of the Mountain in New Hampshire is gone.
it has been gone since 2003 ..
that area near Franconia Notch is pretty spectacular though
I think you can hang out with j.lee's aunt in Maine
Looking through my IG Explore page, if I happen to click on a photo of an attractive asian woman, 40% of the time I'll see "liked by [j.lee's IG handle]"
other quick NE road trip ideas
- Burlington, Lake Champlain and VT
- Mt Washington area and NH
- central ME huts and "Grand Canyon of the East" at Gulf Hagas
you could describe a sort of a loop and start up Maine through to say Augusta, then take Rte 2 through places like Skowhegan to end up Gorham NH, looking at Mt Washington, and then either south through Central NH (I don't know that part of the state at all alas) or pick up 91 to take in the upper valley, maybe go to Hanover and the Quechee / Woodstock "metroplex" before heading back to Boston - that would leverage your suggestions about Maine but also get some inland northern NE flavor.
for coastal Maine, Acadia NP is very nice but you need resv and it can get crowded in Bar Harbor, which is the main town.
if you want to go off the beaten path i have a bunch of suggestions but it may not suffice if you "want to go to Maine"
i would suggest a 4-7 day trip like this
- start in Portsmouth NH
- drive to some of the Maine beach towns like Ogunquit, Kennebunkport
- stop in Portland ME for a lobster roll
- stop in little towns like Camden or Rockport
- drive up the coast to Acadia and find somewhere to stay in Bar Harbor
- rent some bikes one day along the carriage roads to the Jordan Pond House
- it is nice to hike/drive up Cadillac mountain, i think you need timed resv these days
you can easily spend 4-5 days in Portsmouth, Portland or Acadia or just a get a sample of it w/ a little time in each.
the Belfast - Bucksport - Penobscot / Blue Hill arc is very pretty.
everyone likes to get popovers and jam at the Jordan Pond House, make sure you budget a few hours or have resv. you can also drive right up to it, try to find parking, etc.

Bill Gates or Elon Musk? Rate how you feel about either, scale of 1-19.

At 7:26 AM Pacific time, only one topic with only one comment. What's going on here?
SGBear left town and those of us on the east coast are plainly falling down on the job.
