Recently scored tix for Wu-Tang Clan & Nas: NY State Of Mind Tour, Massachusetts on Sept 10th.

Big Wu-Tang fan ever since they came out in my early teens, and the last show I went to was a few years ago at a small venue, which beforehand I had decided was going to be my final time seeing them live.

But, that show was tainted by a drunk douchebag who wouldn't stop making noise and tried to start a fight with me pretty early on, so I was on edge the whole show. Cant let that be my last memory of the Wu, so this will be my final farewell to the Clan. And I've never seen Nas live, so that's an added bonus.

we saw some Wu Tang vets at the Blue Note in NYC a few weeks ago. was fantastic show.

Nice. Wu have always put on good shows, and their vocals live are on par with how they sound on albums. Ive seen plenty of other rappers who are only good in the studio with live performances sounding nothing like what you're familiar with on the album. I suppose that's true for good bands in any genre.

Also, Wu tend to exude positive energy regardless of the content. (which makes it so out of place when a bad egg or two wants to act stupidly at one of their shows)

I had been going to see Beach Bunny on Sunday at the 930 Club in DC with my daughters, but the whole band just got COVID so they've postponed the show. Next up is an old man show by myself (Franz Ferdinand also at the 930 club in August) and the All Things Go one day festival in October.

I saw them in... I want to say 2016? Late 2015? - and thoroughly enjoyed it. Weird show though insofar as it was in a hall for orchestral type performances and at least half the audience was up in the cheap seats on the balcony. The band couldn't understand why people wouldn't just come downstairs, which I think demonstrated how little they understand an audience of white collar rule followers in the DC suburbs on a random Thursday.

other quick NE road trip ideas

- Burlington, Lake Champlain and VT

- Mt Washington area and NH

- central ME huts and "Grand Canyon of the East" at Gulf Hagas

Expand full comment
DC Trojan's avatar

you could describe a sort of a loop and start up Maine through to say Augusta, then take Rte 2 through places like Skowhegan to end up Gorham NH, looking at Mt Washington, and then either south through Central NH (I don't know that part of the state at all alas) or pick up 91 to take in the upper valley, maybe go to Hanover and the Quechee / Woodstock "metroplex" before heading back to Boston - that would leverage your suggestions about Maine but also get some inland northern NE flavor.

Expand full comment
HeyStudentsBears's avatar

for coastal Maine, Acadia NP is very nice but you need resv and it can get crowded in Bar Harbor, which is the main town.

if you want to go off the beaten path i have a bunch of suggestions but it may not suffice if you "want to go to Maine"

i would suggest a 4-7 day trip like this

- start in Portsmouth NH

- drive to some of the Maine beach towns like Ogunquit, Kennebunkport

- stop in Portland ME for a lobster roll

- stop in little towns like Camden or Rockport

- drive up the coast to Acadia and find somewhere to stay in Bar Harbor

- rent some bikes one day along the carriage roads to the Jordan Pond House

- it is nice to hike/drive up Cadillac mountain, i think you need timed resv these days

you can easily spend 4-5 days in Portsmouth, Portland or Acadia or just a get a sample of it w/ a little time in each.

the Belfast - Bucksport - Penobscot / Blue Hill arc is very pretty.

Expand full comment
HeyStudentsBears's avatar

everyone likes to get popovers and jam at the Jordan Pond House, make sure you budget a few hours or have resv. you can also drive right up to it, try to find parking, etc.

Expand full comment

one of the counter intuitive facts of driving around that neck of the woods is that it's often just as fast to drive on their poky country roads than take the interstate. I haven't been to Maine in ages and only ever went to my in-law's place on Deer Isle, which really is BFE. The good news is that it's scenic as hell along a lot of the coast so you don't have to go fight with all the tourists at places like Acadia, there are plenty of other small towns with lovely coastline and people who will sell you lobster 7 ways.

FET: My buddy booked us into the Portland downtown Courtyard Marriott. My flight was delayed, so I arrived into Portland late last night. I uber in, check in, grab what I thought was a beer from the minibar only to discover it was Underwood sparkling wine in a can. Tasted like I should be at a bachelorette party. Finish it and pass out. I awake early and open the drapes. There's a river in front of me. I'm thinking "huh? why is there a river downtown?". I scramble down to the front desk to figure out what the heck is going on. It turns out, I punched in the wrong Marriott into Uber and went to the waterfront Marriott. As it also turned out, my buddy booked the wrong Marriott, so I accidentally went to the RIGHT hotel. Unfortunately, I'm now in the part of town that's been overrun with homeless over the past 5 years. Portland is hurting pretty bad right now.
