Go Bears!!!

I’m watching the golf while eating lunch and after Morikawa makes a birdie someone in the gallery yells out “ all right Collin, go bears.” The announcer then recognizes the “very exuberant Cal fans in the crowd.”

When Max Homa teed off later the announcer noted he had a lot of ground to make up his Cal housemate for the week, fellow Bear Morikawa.

Might try to take my kids there this summer. They never did it because we moved away before no 2 and No 3 started school.

I love driving up Wildcat Canyon from Orinda, back by the golf course, then Grizzly Peak into Oakland.

the golf course is evil. i am not a great golfer, but balls are always getting lost, into the woods, etc.

otherwise Tilden a hidden gem in the area.

Samuel J. Democrat won the popular vote in the 1876 presidential election but was denied the presidency by virtue of the compromise of 1877 that gave the presidency to Rutherford Hayes in exchange for an end to Reconstruction.

Backpack

Expand full comment

I've got 1 backpack that I use when I travel. I can fit a portable LCD monitor and a 16" Macbook Pro into the "laptop" section and then some other stuff. I also have two Timbuk2 bags, one larger than the other. In the larger one I can fit 2 16" Macbook Pros along with a bunch of other stuff. I bought the 2nd one when I was at the outlet and saw it for $30. It's a smaller one that fits a single laptop so I use the larger one when I travel for work and the smaller one if I just need to go to the coffee shop.

i might have a backpack fetish.

many backpacks for just the right moment and activity. i cant say they all get equal use, but they do all get used when appropriate. some of them are ..

- backcountry skiing backpack has ice axe, shovel, avalanche probe

- hiking backpack of all shapes and sizes depending on length of hike

- work backpack for just laptop

- work backpack w/ space for gym clothes and shoes

- camera backpack w/ compartments for lenses

- overnight stay backpack w/ laptop compartment

- tennis stuff backpack

- cycling stuff backpack

I have the Aer travel pack (size small), a Mission Workshop Rambler, a couple of "own brand" small daypacks from a Scottish outdoors store, and I think an old Timbuk2 backpack that can accomodate a small laptop. Where it starts to go a little sideways is if you include messenger bags and duffle bags.

i have the Aer gym/work/laptop backpack combo. it has been great.

i use it less and less these days since my days of commuting to NYC and working out during the workday are over.

I've been spending far more time than is really appropriate lately trying to figure out which of my bags for travel I could use on Ryanair and they have some weird dimension requirements.

Expand full comment

RyanAir: 40cm x 25cm x 20cm

Delta: 56 cm x 35 cm x 23 cm

Expand full comment

tiny compared to US standards

Expand full comment

Ryanair is especially restrictive, but yeah - the backpack I used for 2 laptops and a couple of days of clothes that fits under the seat for US domestic flights is considered overhead bin size for Ryanair. It certainly explains why you see people with tiny rollaboards in airports in the UK.

Expand full comment

I bought the Euro-sized Away rollaboard because I fly in Europe enough to make it necessary, but boy do I have rollaboard envy on US domestic flights when everyone else's bag is at least 1" bigger in every dimension.

Expand full comment

I got an "international" sized rollaboard from Briggs & Riley years ago (holy shit it's built like a tank) but it's still too big for Ryanair. Expanded, it makes for a good check-in in company with a duffle for some supplemental clothes.

Juan Soto says he's open to negotiate a longer term contract with the Yankees. A small piece of trivia: Soto was traded for four minor league pitchers and Kyle Higashioka. Higashioka is a 34-year old backup catcher that spent - up to that point - his entire career in the Yankees system. Higashioka commited to Cal, but instead decided to accept the $500k signing bonus when he was drafted in the 7th round out of high school.

German authorities have vowed to crack down on and fine English sports tourists who sing "10 German Bombers" song. As with many English sports songs, they are based on American spiritual songs. 10 German Bombers is sung to the tune of "She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain", which comes from the African-American plantation spiritual "When the Chariot Comes" [Possible NSFW ads because it's from a UK rag]

Watched a Michael Keaton diddy on Netflix yesterday from 2017 called American Assassin…looks like a straight-to-streaming number that earned an uninspiring-tho-dead-on-balls accurate 6.2 stars on IMDB. The premise of the film is somewhat of a rather large stretch and there’s some some graphic violence and disturbing torture scenes…however there is a pretty memorable climax scene that is honestly rather unique and basically saved the thing. It was actually pretty cool. If you wanna kill 120 minutes….
