In my opinion, the term "net carbs" should be outlawed. It is misleading. Somehow, food companies can subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbohydrates to come up with "net carbs". Soluble fiber - which is the majority of what food companies substitute simple carbohydrates for are, while it takes longer to digest so illicits a lower insulin reaction. Insulin represses the "I'm full" felling and stimulates the "I'm hungry" feeling. But my point is that it is still metabolized - you still digest it and you consume those calories. Same with xylitol - a sugar alcohol that is used in most "sugar free" products. You still metabolize it and it literally turns into glucose - sugar. Now non-soluble fiber is a real thing. You don't metabolize it. Net carbs should subtract only things you can't metabolize.

The A’s were seemingly on track to secure their first victory in over a week this afternoon in their finale against the Angels. DURHAM, N.C. – The California baseball team's 2025 season and run at the ACC Championship ended Thursday with a 10-3 loss to No. 1 seed Georgia Tech (40-16) in the quarterfinals. The No. 16 seed Golden Bears (24-31) had knocked off No. 9 Miami and No. 8 Wake Forest the past two days to reach the quarterfinals and finished with six wins in their final 10 games of the campaign.
Alekna Appears On The Bowerman Watch List For 22nd Time
World Record-Holder Honored More Than Any Thrower In History
California track & field's Mykolas Alekna, the discus world record-holder and reigning ACC Champion, added another accolade to his historic career as he earned his 22nd appearance on The Bowerman Watch List on Thursday. Alekna is now in sole possession of the third-most appearances all time and the most by any thrower. The Bowerman is the highest honor granted to a collegiate track & field athlete, celebrating the best man and woman of each season.
The California track & field team is set to send 26 athletes to College Station, Texas, next week for the NCAA West Regionals, following the release of the men's and women's regional qualifying lists Thursday. The meet, which will be held from May 28-31 and aired on ESPN+, will determine which athletes advance to the upcoming NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, this June.
BERKELEY – Cal alums Jeff (BA Rhetoric '75) and Patty (BA History '75, single subject teaching credential '76) Williams are no strangers to making an impact both in their local community and on campus. In 2022, the couple honored Patty's teaching background and made a generous endowment gift to the Berkeley School of Education that covers the entire cost of attendance in the Berkeley Teacher Education Program for an aspiring teacher, first-generation college graduate, in perpetuity.
After taking home the MPSF's first-ever men's rowing conference championship, No. 2 California was rewarded with several postseason honors, the conference office announced Thursday. Senior Frederick Breuer was named MPSF Athlete of the Year and Cal head coach Scott Frandsen was named MPSF Coach of the Year.
Breuer was also named to the MPSF All-Conference team along with senior Angus Dawson, graduate coxswain Iliad Izadi and senior Harry Manton.
ESPN Events announced Thursday that the California volleyball team will be one of 16 ACC squads participating in the inaugural "Showdown at the Net," which will consist of a series of matches between ACC and SEC teams on Sept. 9-10. The nonprofit hospital network Shriners Children's will also sponsor a pair of neutral-site marquee matchups in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sept. 10, with tickets set to go on sale early this summer. Teams were selected for the event and subsequently seeded based on the RPI released in December 2024.
I've flown through Zurich before and their lounge was pretty nice so when I had to fly back from Athens last December I decided to go through Zurich and also fly Swiss Air. I bought a premium economy seat and when I was boarding they said they have a different ticket for me. They upgraded me to Business lay flat! United doesn't do crap like that. So when I have to go to Dubai in Dec, I'm going to try to fly back through Zurich on a Swiss Air flight again and see if they'll upgrade me again. The cost for a premium economy ticket was only like 3-400 more than a regular economy seat so totally worth it.
Business class is way above my pay grade. Usually Premium economy is as well, but I'll pay $300-400 for it for an 8+ hour flight. So I've only done it maybe 4 times. Can't figure out how United decides some Premium Economy seats are only $300 more and some are $1500-2000 more. Doesn't make sense.
i had to "lose" my Swiss Army Knife yesterday. we didnt have enough time to check bags at airport and i usually bring one along in my checked-in luggage.
JFK has a 1-hour cutoff to get bags checked in. we missed it by just a couple minutes to various forms of running late.
i proactively gave it to TSA rather than waste more time getting my bag sidelined and needing to wait to the TSA person to take it.
luckily we packed light enough that the expanded rolly bags could be squished back to their normal carry-on size.

No anticipated travel for me until the BC game at the end of Sept. Then the Louisville game in Nov and then Dubai for work. Unfortunately I'm missing the Stockholm testing event in a few weeks because No 3 has UCSC graduation and the Sept event is in SF so no flying for me. I'm just hoping that they'll let me stay at the hotel because I don't want to have to commute in every day. It's at the Fairmont so that would be nice.

Premium Economy - an excellent value, more so when you get that upgrade!
