Cal is the dramatic foil rather than the hero, but “Boys in the Boat” is one of the best sports books I’ve ever read. The movie unfortunately fails to capture the most dramatic moments as effectively.
Nine days ago, Shadeur Sanders signed his $4.6m 4-year contract that includes a $447,380 signing bonus. This is a pay-cut vis-a-vis the $5.1m he made at Colorado. Rookie contracts for non-first rounders are usually not guranateed. With this in mind, he has already spent the majority of his first year's take-home pay on a $0.5m Rolls-Royce Phantom purchase. This fool is going to be bankrupt the day he is out of the NFL.
And yet the NBA will still make money on the TV rights. Lots of money. Just not as much as they'd like if The Finals had been New York vs. Golden State or, better yet, Boston vs. LA Lakers.
i always wonder why people say that. is there any evidence of this?
i appreciate that there are less $$ in smaller markets .. but the person from LA who is a basketball fan will watch NY vs OKC just as much as IND vs OKC no?
i think the NBA more than the other leagues goes to great efforts to have competitive teams all over the country and a draft system that gives the lesser teams a true fighting chance to improve thru the draft.
they would just be more like MLB if they "didnt like it" ..
Just a couple of days removed from snapping their horrible 11-game losing streak the A’s found themselves in the loss column again on Tuesday evening, getting punched in the mouth by the division-rival Houston Astros 11-1. The Athletics now falling even further behind in the race for the playoffs and the panic button needs to be hit hard and fast as they drop to 23-32.
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Trailing 3-1 as late as the seventh inning, the Ballers were on the ropes against the Grand Junction Jackalopes in their first-ever meeting. Clutch hitting and lockdown pitching lifted Oakland to a 4-3, come-from-behind victory Tuesday night.
Oakland executed in optimal scoring situations right away. Tremayne Cobb Jr. worked a leadoff walk and stole second, Davis Drewek singled him to third and Daniel Harris IV brought him home with a groundout to establish a 1-0 edge in the first inning.
Outhitting their opponent 13 to six, and out-homering them three to one, the Dodgers delivered a pretty comprehensive performance to secure a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians.
Whenever a pitcher strikes out three to begin a game against the Dodgers, that catches your attention, given the level of hitters he’s facing. When Tanner Bibee did this to navigate a Freddie Freeman single in the first, it was even more impressive considering he’s struggles to rack up strikeouts this season. An inning later, though, something even more impressive happened: Max Muncy stole a base to help set up a two-run frame for the Dodgers, securing a lead they’d never relinquish.
LEIPZIG, Germany – California men's gymnastics' Theodor Roald Gadderud competed in his third European Championships on Tuesday as part of the four-man Norwegian squad, scoring for the team in his first four out of six events and posting an all-around score of 75.398 for 35th place out of 69 total gymnasts at Messe Leipzig.
The California track & field team's 26 qualifiers will throw down against hundreds of the best athletes in the nation this week, each ready to put their best effort forward at the NCAA West Regionals in College Station, Texas, to earn a coveted spot at next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships. The four-day meet at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium runs Wednesday-Saturday, with each day's evening events streamed on ESPN+. Live results will be available at Flash Results.
BERKELEY – Bay Area native Chris Bell has signed to play for the California men's basketball program in the 2025-26 season. Bell, who grew up in Concord and played at De La Salle High School, joins the Golden Bears following three seasons played at Syracuse.
Bell, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound forward, started 75 of 95 games played across his three years with the Orange (2022-25) and has knocked down 170 career 3-pointers, including 82 of 200 (42%) during a standout sophomore season in 2023-24 when he averaged 12 points per game.
Four California softball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Infielder Acacia Anders, outfielder Kaylee Pond, and pitchers Anna Reimers and Annabel Teperson earned recognition for their performance on the diamond and in the classroom.
Most incoming administrations have some degree of "the previous guys screwed things up, we will fix it" but the current group takes this to the ridiculous level. Something like "the previous 100 years have been screwed up, so we'll get rid of all that".
Ariel Denpsey was given a (false) terminal disease diagnosis, gave a TEDTalk, earned her MD from Michigan State, and is currently a DPhil candidate at Oxford for Science and Religion in order to enter into the very heavy industry of paliative care - she just won the mixed uphill race at the Gloucestershire cheese rolling race because she inadvertently left her cell phone at the top of the hill.

Knicks fade down the stretch. didnt quite have enough firepower to keep up w/ Pacers.
they got it down to 6 a couple times in the 4th q, but new closed the gap.
The Pacers have never won an NBA Championship (though they have three ABA Championships), and they have only made the NBA Finals one time in 2000
NBA isn't going to like Pacers vs OKC in the finals. No big market teams.
And yet the NBA will still make money on the TV rights. Lots of money. Just not as much as they'd like if The Finals had been New York vs. Golden State or, better yet, Boston vs. LA Lakers.

I think the NBA feels there are more fans that just want to watch their team rather than hardcore fans that will watch a finals game with any team.

Watching the Dodgers while eating lunch. Kershaw looks thicker than I remember him.
If you saw any highlights of him shirtless during the WS celebration after the game, he definitely has a dad bod now.
