Do you have a garbage disposal?

Expand full comment

Both places.

Expand full comment

Hell yes. Use it daily.

Expand full comment

Yes. I added one when we bought the house in Louisville. I did find out that the previous owner had the kitchen moved to a space under a covered porch. The people he had to do the work had joined the drains of the new kitchen sink and washer (in a new laundry room adjoining the kitchen) to the main with a Y that was easy to plug up.

Apparently his workers didn't glue one section of pipe so one time I tried to snake it the pipe disconnected and water and waste ended up in the crawl space, unbeknownst to me for at least a week. I ended up smelling rotting food as water leaked out at the bottom of the clapboards.

But I still kept using the garbage disposal after that. Just was a bit more careful.

Expand full comment

Not on your life. Too many downsides to having one, plus it sets up drains and laterals for getting clogged if you don't run gallons of water to dilute the waste.

Further, there are added treatment costs in the sewage waste stream by adding foodstuffs through the garbage disposal that could otherwise be (1) composted or (2) thrown out in the trash.

Expand full comment

we have one, but it's 95% compost and 5% random shit that ends up in the drain. so rarely use the disposal. but it's better than fishing the crud out.

Not true

Could be true

we do. i have had one pretty much everywhere i have ever lived.

occasionally at a rental house or mountain cabin, there is a kitchen w/o one or even a dishwasher.

is there a rule of thumb that you shouldnt put stuff in it that should otherwise go in the garbage, ie food scraps?

Expand full comment

When my first house needed a new disposal, I went to the hardware store and found many options. Tiny apartment type disposals that couldn't handle much more than soft plantlife, to large powerhouses that were rated to grind beef bones.

The concept of Americans "defecting" is hilarious to me. You're free to move anywhere you want, and give up your American citizenship. You don't even need top make an announcement! Defection is for people who are not allowed to leave their home countries, so defecting is their only choice.

He has little chance, but seems like he will attack Trump directly for being a twice impeached election loser clown show, so is a bit refreshing. At least he is actually trying to win in 2024! I think the rest of the field, with their “Trump is a true American hero, but…” nonsense is not even attempting to win in 24, but just hoping to get their names out there for runs in later years, TV pundit jobs, or both. Get ‘em, Chris!

P.S. we so badly need open primaries….

Fresh off an exciting win over the visiting Atlanta Braves on Memorial Day in Oakland, the Oakland Athletics faced the Braves for game two of the three-game series Tuesday night at the Coliseum.

J.P. Sears, the 27-year-old lefty, got the start against the National League East leading Braves. Atlanta sent 24-year-old right hander Bryce Elder to the mound. Elder with his NL leading 2.01 ERA is 3-0 in his ten 2023 starts.

Giants walk 7 times, get 5 hits, lose to Pirates 2-1

Ah, Baseball. The one sport that’s ready to knock you out the second you feel good about how a game went down. Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants won 14-4, scoring the most runs at Oracle Park since July 2015. 18 hours later, they lose 2-1.

It wasn’t the worst game you’ll see the Giants play, but it was pretty typical of what we’ve seen since roundabout 2017. The exception this time being that it certainly felt like the Giants could move ahead at any time. But we’re not quite back in 2021 territory, where every late game deficit became a come from behind victory. We’re still in that stage where Patrick Bailey and Brett Wisely are gonna chase tantalizing high fastballs in the bottom of the 9th because they’re rookies and they’re facing an elite closer like David Bednar.

Expand full comment

and today – my first game of the season – they had like 11 hits, but lost 9 to 4(?) Schmitt missed a 3HR by a couple of feet. Cobb allowed a rally by hitting someone in the foot. A few "why is the Giants defender not where they're supposed to be?".

I think 13 of the Pie-rats' 14 hits didn't reach the outfield grass on the fly. And like six of them were doubles between Davis and the third-base line.

BUT, even tho there were 13 runs and 25 hits and 3 errors, the game was only 2:40 long. which was great! didn't notice the "shot clock" except for when Yaz got himself in an 0-1 hole w/o seeing a pitch.

Dodgers power and defense back Tony Gonsolin in win over Nationals

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/5/30/23743401/freddie-freeman-jd-martinez-home-runs-dodgers-tony-gonsolin-nationals

Answering the bell every single time the Nationals tried to get close on this one, the Dodgers secured a 7-3 win Tuesday behind a strong outing from Tony Gonsolin and the defense behind him, with four different batters chipping in multi-hit games.

Just another evening of Freddie Freeman and J.D. Martinez carrying this lineup to a fine offensive performance. The Dodgers first baseman had four hits, extending his hitting streak to 19 games, with 13 of them having been multi-hit ones. His fourth hit was a home run in the eighth inning.

I thought the last four eps were ok, altho wrapped things up too quickly. Nate is bad...no, he's good! Keeley is with Roy...no, she's not...maybe she is. The Beard closing wasn't great. And bringing back characters for the last ep – with essentially no dialogue – who should have been part of the whole season, was odd. Maybe they had other commitments, so they filmed it (and other possible scenes) at the end of S2?

The Sacrament (a film from 2013…I watched on Tubi). (9/19)…cult movie,e.g. a movie about a cult.

I read a mousey Mick LaSalle blurb online where he was asked to list some of his actor/roles that he thought SHOULD have won an Oscar but did not, and he mentioned Gene Jones, who played Father in The Sacrament. I recognized him from the famous coin toss scene with Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Man, but he was also in Hateful Eight. And he was definitely good in this.

So, LaSalle cautioned that this movie was very disturbing, so I figured I’d check it out…plus it was by Ti West, who did X and Pearl, which I thought were solid. Parts of it were definitely disturbing, but all in all, it appears to have just been a cult film based mostly on the Jim Jones massacre…which drains it of all originality, IMO. So at the end, I just felt kind of meh about it.
