That Pittsburgh team is scrappy.

Good question. I'm thinking average completion ratio and TD/INT ratio for the time. I forced myself to stack-rank them, about 3 per quintile with more skewed to the top because there were lots of partial season players who didn't make the list (eg, Rubenzer) that would be below average.
Top Tier: Campbell, Rodgers, Goff,
Well above average: Longshore, Barr, Webb
Above Average: Garbers, Longshore, Barnes, Taylor
Middle: Riley, Boller, Pawlawski, Bowers
Below Average: Vedder, Gilbert, Maynard
Bottom Tier: Torchio, Brown, Ayoob
So let's look at the middle tier. If I'm ranking those four, I'd put Pawlawski at the top as he was a good but not great QB who was very much a winner and a great guy. The bottom of that group, I'd put Riley - who is the definition of "if he was any good, we'd be...". Boller had a cannon for an arm and ALWAYS threw it hard even when the situation didn't call for it, leading to a lot of dropped passes and interceptions. It didn't help that Tom Holmoe was his coach. His senior year, he got better coaching through Tedford & staff. So even average Cal QBs can get drafted in the 1st round. But in terms of pure averageness, I'd have to go with good enough to beat you but not good enough to be bowl eligible is Ross Bowers - an all around good guy. High 50% completion rate, low YPA, mediocre TD/INT ratio and proved it wasn't a fluke by doing the same thing at NIU
I did my list from 1990 to current, basically overlapping your QB's. From your tiers, I had Pawlaski and Boller higher, Barr lower (still top half), Barnes and Longshore lower. My smack dab middle QB was Kevin Riley.
Bonus points for Reggie Robertson, who played sparingly in the early 00's and was always a mystery guy to me.
Nate's ankle injuries really screwed over two potentially great seasons that could have carried the program's momentum through from 2004, probably getting us to a New Year's Day (or better) bowl game at least once. Really wonder where we'd be now if that had happened.

I believe with Levy at QB in 05 we probably go 10-2 or 11-1 in 05, with our only loss to an undefeated SC. Our other 3 losses that season were by 7 at ucla, 7 in OT at Oregon and 3 at home to OSU. Levy was good enough to win at least 2, if not all 3 of those games.
If Tedford goes with Riley in 07, we probably go 8-4 or 9-3. Which isn’t great in relation to how the season started but it would still be a success when considering how 07 actually ended up and that we would have been starting our backup QB. 8-4 or 9-3 would have helped keep the momentum in the program.
We definitely win both of those. UCLA I'm not so sure about. Ayoob wasn't bad in that game, and it was mostly the D and special teams that let us down.
Also keep in mind that it was an 11-game regular season in 2005, so you'd be looking at 9-2 or 10-1 and then playing someone other than BYU in the bowl game.
We win minimum 10 games in the regular season that year, with an outside chance at being undefeated. Nate would have probably been drafted by the NFL (not first round, but in some round). Truly a catastrophic injury.
Rarely has there been a better example of a pre-injury version and a post-injury version (who could still play) that had to be evaluated as 2 distinct cases than Longshore was.
As the creator of this assignment I'm giving you an A. However I question why, like many other Cal fans, you have Gilbert rated so low. He won two Big Games (he was excellent in the '82 win known more for Cal's special teams play) and went on to have a ten-year career in the NFL. I remember people deriding him throughout his time at Cal but I thought he was always an above average QB playing on below average teams.
I think Gale Gilbert was the flashlight during dark time. You got to remember that he was the same class (1980) as J Torchio. Both of them backed up Rich Campbell in 1980, with Torchio getting the nod at second string as he developed faster. Campbell goes off to the NFL and Torchio gets the start as a sophomore - producing arguably one of the worst quarterbacking seasons in modern Cal history, completing just 42.7% of his passes. I remember being feeling so helpless with Torchio because he was so consistently bad. Torchio ends up with a career 44.4% completion rate, not including nearly twice as many throws to the other team than TDs to our own.
Numbers don't lie. Gale Gilbert completes 54%, 59%, and 54% of his passes over his final 3 season (which was average for that time) with not many more TDs than INTs and only about 6 YPA. He was merely average, but that was a massive upgrade from Torchio.
Cal had a lot of offensive tools during the Pawlawski years. Anthony Wallace, Russell White, Greg Zomalt, Marty Holly, Brian Treggs, Sean Dawkins, Brent Woodall, Mike Caldwell, Damien Semien. The Oline under Steussie, Richards, Gordon, Auzenne, and Rogers was great. Guys were open. How many WRs at Cal under Garbers got any separation? How many times did we rely on Garbers' legs to get a first down after his receivers were covered and the oline broke down? Garbers did far more with less.
You can make the same argument about Nate Longshore. The offensive talent around him in 2006-07 was insane. Why wouldn't Pawlawski be on a similar tier?
That is a fair point though at the same time we had a nice run game this past year and you’d think a good QB could parlay that into some nice pickups downfield on play action even without elite WRs and we didn’t see that
Yeah, I think Garbers was good for the team we had when he was here. But just imagine it was Dykes situation where our D was made of wax paper and he needed to grip and rip it and put up 50 every game. He would be below average for that scenario

As someone whose 4 undergrad seasons were 97-00, I beg to differ on Vedder. He sucked. Along with the rest of the O, too, to be fair, but they wasted a good D and put us perpetually in the cellar. It felt like we had a better chance of scoring when the D was on the field bc at least Deltha might pick one off and run it back

Also keep in mind that it was an 11-game regular season in 2005, so you'd be looking at 9-2 or 10-1 and then playing someone other than BYU in the bowl game.
We win minimum 10 games in the regular season that year, with an outside chance at being undefeated. Nate would have probably been drafted by the NFL (not first round, but in some round). Truly a catastrophic injury.

Rarely has there been a better example of a pre-injury version and a post-injury version (who could still play) that had to be evaluated as 2 distinct cases than Longshore was.

I agree, especially with the talent on the 07 roster. If Tedford sticks with Riley in 07 we probably beat Stanford and ucla.
And Riley was 100x better than Longshore in the Armed Forces Bowl. I would say 2008 season, both were about equal.
As the creator of this assignment I'm giving you an A. However I question why, like many other Cal fans, you have Gilbert rated so low. He won two Big Games (he was excellent in the '82 win known more for Cal's special teams play) and went on to have a ten-year career in the NFL. I remember people deriding him throughout his time at Cal but I thought he was always an above average QB playing on below average teams.
I think Gale Gilbert was the flashlight during dark time. You got to remember that he was the same class (1980) as J Torchio. Both of them backed up Rich Campbell in 1980, with Torchio getting the nod at second string as he developed faster. Campbell goes off to the NFL and Torchio gets the start as a sophomore - producing arguably one of the worst quarterbacking seasons in modern Cal history, completing just 42.7% of his passes. I remember being feeling so helpless with Torchio because he was so consistently bad. Torchio ends up with a career 44.4% completion rate, not including nearly twice as many throws to the other team than TDs to our own.
Numbers don't lie. Gale Gilbert completes 54%, 59%, and 54% of his passes over his final 3 season (which was average for that time) with not many more TDs than INTs and only about 6 YPA. He was merely average, but that was a massive upgrade from Torchio.
Gilbert got hurt in the first game in 1981. Cal was up 28-16 on aTm at halftime and went on to lose 29-28 after he went out.

Cal had a lot of offensive tools during the Pawlawski years. Anthony Wallace, Russell White, Greg Zomalt, Marty Holly, Brian Treggs, Sean Dawkins, Brent Woodall, Mike Caldwell, Damien Semien. The Oline under Steussie, Richards, Gordon, Auzenne, and Rogers was great. Guys were open. How many WRs at Cal under Garbers got any separation? How many times did we rely on Garbers' legs to get a first down after his receivers were covered and the oline broke down? Garbers did far more with less.
You can make the same argument about Nate Longshore. The offensive talent around him in 2006-07 was insane. Why wouldn't Pawlawski be on a similar tier?
That is a fair point though at the same time we had a nice run game this past year and you’d think a good QB could parlay that into some nice pickups downfield on play action even without elite WRs and we didn’t see that
We had a nice run game that was often times abandoned by the OC in favor of trying to get Garbers and the passing the game going.
Yeah, I think Garbers was good for the team we had when he was here. But just imagine it was Dykes situation where our D was made of wax paper and he needed to grip and rip it and put up 50 every game. He would be below average for that scenario
hmmm, thats tough cause most of them are pretty dead center, bang on average. J Torchio was the worst with some Maynard sprinkled in there pretty liberally as total crap. Justin Vedder? He was pretty average in just about every way
As someone whose 4 undergrad seasons were 97-00, I beg to differ on Vedder. He sucked. Along with the rest of the O, too, to be fair, but they wasted a good D and put us perpetually in the cellar. It felt like we had a better chance of scoring when the D was on the field bc at least Deltha might pick one off and run it back
