Welcome to the DBD , the W4C community comment board where one can talk about almost anything.
Oski the Bear first appeared in 1941, but he is named after the “Oski Yell”, a late-19th century cheer.
Oski Wow-Wow!Whiskey Wee-Wee!Olee! Muckie-eye!Olee! Berkeley-eye!California! Wow!
The origin is uncertain, but the University of Illinois claims it originated in 1899. However, UC Berkeley yearbooks document how the yell was used as an anti-temperance/prohibition protest cheer before then, hence why “whiskey” is mentioned. Oski may be a goofy anachronism of a mascot, but he is our goofy mascot. I don’t like him, but I still love him.

does anyone have updates on the whole Under Armour issue. Also what happening with the Softball Field renovations?
I love Oski, but what amuses me even more is UC Davis's take on the yell: Bossy Cow Cow!

Oski always has seemed a bit creepy to me...maybe it is the Uncanny Valley Effect, maybe not
I am confused about the origin of the yell. Why did the University of Illinois claim the yell originated in 1899 if the yell does not refer to the University of Illinois, or anything related to that university or even to Illinois, but rather to Berkeley and California? If so, what was the original, "late-19th century cheer" that did not include the words "Berkeley" or "California," which perhaps Cal later adopted and modified and inserted the words "Berkeley" and "California."
