Welcome to the DBD , the W4C community comment board where one can talk about almost anything.
Oski the Bear first appeared in 1941, but he is named after the “Oski Yell”, a late-19th century cheer.
Oski Wow-Wow!
Whiskey Wee-Wee!
Olee! Muckie-eye!
Olee! Berkeley-eye!
California! Wow!
The origin is uncertain, but the University of Illinois claims it originated in 1899. However, UC Berkeley yearbooks document how the yell was used as an anti-temperance/prohibition protest cheer before then, hence why “whiskey” is mentioned. Oski may be a goofy anachronism of a mascot, but he is our goofy mascot. I don’t like him, but I still love him.
The domestic airlines sure are price gouging. PHL to SFO is over 1000 round trip over the summer. Even BOS to SFO which has multiple nonstops is over 1000. It's almost cheaper to fly internationally.
My romance friends are going to a conference in July, so I considered flying out to DC to hang out with them, but flights are like...$1200. So, I'm staying put.
We booked our mid-May trip to LA in the winter when tickets were ~400 per person. The prices are insane now.
Relatedly, I'm going to Hamburg, Germany for work in July and prices aren't too bad. Cheapest ticket I've seen from Philly to Hamburg has been ~400 on British Airways, but flights back are quite a bit more expensive, usually 800-1000 (unless I want to pay half-price and have a 13-hour layover).
We bought our house 7 years ago and refinancing early last year while interest rates bottomed out is probably one of the best financial decisions we've made.
I bought another house two days ago. It won't close until Nov-Jan timeframe, so this is going to sting. Mortgage rates are already over 6% and may be +7% by then.
My dad will still be out of town, but we'll celebrate Taiwanese Father's Day on August 8. Eight in Mandarin is ba, so August 8 is ba ba, and that's when Taiwan celebrates.
Will be in Japan!!! So probably spend the day being hot and humid :-/
But hopefully NOT watching Game 7 of the Finals (i.e., close it out tomorrow, Dubs!). Altho the Sunday Game 7 is Monday morn in JPN.
With that, any chance that United has the capability to show the game on their screens? We take off around noon tomorrow and land at NRT at about midnite PDT. I've watched Giants playoff games on planes, but that was likely something like JetBlue or VA domestic. Not sure how/if it could work over the Pacific.
I asked my daughter if she'd watch it with me, but she wants to watch Encanto. It's a long flight...she can do both! :-)
we're spending a night at NRT airport, so maybe I'll hide in the lobby for a couple of hours.
4 years ago, I was in the hotel lobby of a Kansai Airport hotel at like 8am watching the Dubs fall way behind and then come back and beat the Rockets in Game 7 (sorry...iirc, you're a Rockets fan). under normal DVR circumstances , I'd have FF a bunch of it, and therefore not enjoyed the win as much. the stress of the comeback made it sweeter!
I don't need the sweetness this time...I'm fine crunching it into a 90 viewing, and hoping it's a win!
We are taking our family vacation starting on Friday. Two days at Disney World (including Father's Day), then driving the east coast of Florida from St. Augustine south to Merritt Island then Miami. Can't wait!
This show is so much fun. I love that it's just a roman-a-clef but around a Pakistani American girl in Jersey City . . . who also happens to have powers.
Don't take this as me making an excuse, but my opinion is that Cal, for various reasons that are not the fault of Wilcox, was more impacted by covid than most other football programs.
Oh absolutely. And no reason to rehash - Cal was definitely more adversely affected by COVID in ‘21 than most teams…with various factors being involved.
Exactly. If he could field even an average, middle-of-the-road Power 5 offense, 7-8 wins a year would be a lock. But he can't, so pretty much every game is a total coin toss.
Texas US Rep district 34 flips Red in a Special Election. First GOP elected in that district since 1871, which included parts of Oklahoma 36 years before becoming a state. Mayra Flores is Mexican born and will represent a district that is 84% Hispanic.
MAGA gets a split decision in South Carolina GOP primaries. Rep Tom Rice lost to Trump-endorsed Russell Fry in a landslide. However, Nancy Mace defeated Trump-endorsed Katie Arrington.
Boebert being investigated for 38,712 miles worth of mileage reimbursement for 2020. Full time truckers drive about 100k miles/year, which means would have been driving 40% of the time all day long.
The same group that leaked dirt on Madison Cawthorne has issued allegations against Rep. Lauren Boebert. According to the unverified allegations - she had an abortion at age 17, worked as a stripper, and then escalated that work to being a paid escort to help bail out her failing business. She was a "sugar baby" for a member of the Koch family, through whom she was introduced to Ted Cruz. She had her second abortion around this time, which includes a non-zero chance was Ted Cruz's. Cruz paid her $70k, convinced her to run for office, and then helped her raise money. The Primary election is in two weeks.
Cal's Camryn Rogers threw her personal best at the NCAA Championship, re-setting the NCAA record. It was farther than every throw at the last summer Olympics, bested only by the eventual winner Anita Wlodarczyk. Wlodarczyk is a legend - holding 15 of the top 16 throws of all time - but she's on the downhill slide of her career because she's currently 36 years old. Wlodarczyk suffered a fully torn thigh muscle injury chasing down someone who tried to break into her car last Friday and still wants to compete in the 2024 Olympics. It may be a competitive event between Rogers (CAN), the Americans and Wlodarczyk (POL).
Tony Gonsolin continued to run roughshod over the competition, and he had to be thanks to the Dodgers offense. Gonsolin lasted his deepest into a game in two seasons on Tuesday, making the Dodgers’ paltry offense hold up in a 2-0 win over the Angels at Dodger Stadium.
The Angels only managed one hit against Gonsolin, a fourth-inning single by Shohei Ohtani, but he was caught trying to steal second base. Gonsolin worked around a pair of walks over the rest of his night, and pitched into the seventh inning for the second time in his career.
Gonsolin allowed no runs in 6⅓ innings on Tuesday, striking out six, his fifth scoreless start of the season to lower his MLB-best ERA to 1.42. In six starts at home this season, Gonsolin has allowed three total runs in 33⅓ innings.
Who'd a thunk that the two aces of the Dodgers pitching staff this year would be Gonsoln and Tyler Anderson; a combined 16 and oh..............................
Umpire Nate Tomlinson was injured in the 9th from a shattered bat from Mike Trout. He was cut, but was able to walk off under his own power. A scary moment.
Giants hang on for a 4-2 win over the Royals thanks to Logan Webb's arm. Giant Tyler Rodgers has been pretty hittable over the past month with a 2+ WHIP and 8.4 ERA.
He's been incredibly hittable, tho oftentimes it's on soft contact, with a fair share of just well-placed infield singles...still, you let that many people get on base late in close games and bad things tend to happen, despite how weakly the ball is hit....
Streaming could work for soccer, in that you won't likely miss anything during long buffering interruptions. But then, since their might be only 1 or 2 scoring plays in an entire game, you could completely miss anything that mattered in any single buffering episode.
I haven’t had any buffering issues with any of the major streaming services. With that said, I recognize streaming a live event is more difficult than a movie or show. However, I watched some of the MLB games on Apple TV and I haven’t had any buffering issues.
I have buffering issues using chromecast using the MLB at bat app on my phone I get buffering but not with the Roku that's in the TV. What's interesting is if I chromecast from my laptop chrome window showing the MLB app it's fine. I guess it's an issue with chromecast to the MLB servers rather than my laptop. It seems to be a well known issue.

I love Oski, but what amuses me even more is UC Davis's take on the yell: Bossy Cow Cow!
TIL...will need to look that up
Fathers Day this weekend
what does your family have planned for you? or what did you plan for yourself?
They don't really plan anything for me.
Ahem not a father :P
My dad will still be out of town, but we'll celebrate Taiwanese Father's Day on August 8. Eight in Mandarin is ba, so August 8 is ba ba, and that's when Taiwan celebrates.
Never heard that, but it makes perfect sense! Maybe I'll move my Father's Day to that date.

Sometimes .. i think of something interesting to post on DBD at the end of the day but decide to wait till the next day.
today i seem to have forgotten what that was!
Oski always has seemed a bit creepy to me...maybe it is the Uncanny Valley Effect, maybe not

I'm assuming that's a joke about the UVE re: Oski...

Obi Wan Episode V
Less fun overall than Ms Marvel, but a bunch of neat moments and a TWIST!
District 9
interesting for about 20 min .. then i fell asleep. seemed a little redundant
I really liked District 9.
I liked that quite a bit when it came out.
Our Flag Means Death - funny show, watched the second episode last night.
I watched it during my Covid quarantine. I wanted to love it, but didn't. the Back 9 was better than the first eps, but still...
and yeah, Blackbeard(?) does help things along. I think carrying a show is too much for "Murray"
Imo the show has a bit of a slow start and doesn't get really good until Taika Waititi's character shows up
Yeah, even episode 1->2 gets better.

Not surprised but I'd take it with a grain of salt. Seems to be based on last year's performance.
I mean, if we can get an offense going we should win 7 games.
I mean, we have been saying this for about as long as Wilcox has been our coach.
I'd add the caveat Wilcox +Garbers. It's the dawn of a new era, my friends!
Don't take this as me making an excuse, but my opinion is that Cal, for various reasons that are not the fault of Wilcox, was more impacted by covid than most other football programs.
I agree with this as I consider the City of Berkeley to be an activist city government. The City takes a bull in a china shop approach to many things.
Oh absolutely. And no reason to rehash - Cal was definitely more adversely affected by COVID in ‘21 than most teams…with various factors being involved.
Hopefully they are more fortunate in ‘22.
Exactly. If he could field even an average, middle-of-the-road Power 5 offense, 7-8 wins a year would be a lock. But he can't, so pretty much every game is a total coin toss.

Oskee Wow-wow is the fight song for University of Illinois
Verse 1
Old Princeton yells her tiger
Wisconsin her varsity
And they give the same old Rah! Rah! Rah!
At each University
But the yell that always thrills me
And fills my heart with joy
Is the good old Oskee wow-wow
That they yell at Illinois
Chorus
Oskee wow-wow Illinois
Our eyes are all on you
Oskee wow-wow Illinois
Wave your Orange and your blue Rah! Rah!
When the team trots out before you
Ev'ry man stand up and yell
Back the team and give [opponent's name]
Oskee wow-wow Illinois
It's not anyone. It's just a sound.
I had the same thought and questions.
