DBD airline price gouging

The domestic airlines sure are price gouging. PHL to SFO is over 1000 round trip over the summer. Even BOS to SFO which has multiple nonstops is over 1000. It's almost cheaper to fly internationally.

We booked our mid-May trip to LA in the winter when tickets were ~400 per person. The prices are insane now.

Relatedly, I'm going to Hamburg, Germany for work in July and prices aren't too bad. Cheapest ticket I've seen from Philly to Hamburg has been ~400 on British Airways, but flights back are quite a bit more expensive, usually 800-1000 (unless I want to pay half-price and have a 13-hour layover).

But hopefully NOT watching Game 7 of the Finals (i.e., close it out tomorrow, Dubs!). Altho the Sunday Game 7 is Monday morn in JPN.

With that, any chance that United has the capability to show the game on their screens? We take off around noon tomorrow and land at NRT at about midnite PDT. I've watched Giants playoff games on planes, but that was likely something like JetBlue or VA domestic. Not sure how/if it could work over the Pacific.

I asked my daughter if she'd watch it with me, but she wants to watch Encanto. It's a long flight...she can do both! :-)

Don't take this as me making an excuse, but my opinion is that Cal, for various reasons that are not the fault of Wilcox, was more impacted by covid than most other football programs.

I agree with this as I consider the City of Berkeley to be an activist city government. The City takes a bull in a china shop approach to many things.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Oh absolutely. And no reason to rehash - Cal was definitely more adversely affected by COVID in ‘21 than most teams…with various factors being involved.

Hopefully they are more fortunate in ‘22.

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly. If he could field even an average, middle-of-the-road Power 5 offense, 7-8 wins a year would be a lock. But he can't, so pretty much every game is a total coin toss.

Expand full comment
O.Overall's avatar

6 wins plus or minus 2 is basically what we are, unless we win the lottery with a QB recruit or something

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Until they change the rules of payments to players, it's tough to see the Bears landing any elite recruits in the era of the NIL, considering Cal is a non-factor on that front...but it'd be nice. I think building in the trenches with 3* recruits is gonna be the ticket for this staff. Field a consistently solid OL and DL, and the other players will rise....

I just hope Wilcox is more prepared for the COVID interruption that you know will ABSOLUTELY impact the 2022 season at some point...it looks like the lack of preparation was the difference in a bowl game last year.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

How would changing the rules of payments to players change the landscape for non-blueblood programs in FBS football? And would those rule changes hold water in the legal arena?

Also, regardless of the rules re: NIL, Cal has another obstacle to overcome - indifference from the campus administration. The faculty at Cal has often been hostile to athletics and has influenced the administration from time to time. The most recent public example of this was the attempt to cut some sponsored sports in September 2010 (most notably baseball; and demote rugby from varsity to club status).

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly - the legality of any type of legislation that would in any way affect or potentially limit the compensation athletes can receive for their Name, Image, and Likeness is one of the main, hot button issues. The NCAA neither received nor provided any tangible procedural framework to deal with the NIL, and it’s basically created a pay for play, with just a handful of schools really benefitting.

No arguments on the institutional hurdles both athletes and the department face at Cal...it’s one of the main reasons why I’ve adjusted my dreams and now view the pinnacle of bowl trips to be that of the Sun, in lovely El Paso. I do so long to see Rose’s Cantina, and to kiss Felina Good-bye....

Oh we are not getting a 5 star QB. What I mean by winning the lottery with a QB recruit is we get a bit less heralded guy like Aaron Rodgers who then tears it up. The Arch Mannings of the world are not going to be frequenting top dog, especially not now for the reasons you cite

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly…and while it’s nice to be in Rashada’s top 5, it’s gonna take unique circumstances to get that type of player under the current rules. I think Jack Plummer tho can be a passable game manager type, provided he has some time to throw.

Cal's Camryn Rogers threw her personal best at the NCAA Championship, re-setting the NCAA record. It was farther than every throw at the last summer Olympics, bested only by the eventual winner Anita Wlodarczyk. Wlodarczyk is a legend - holding 15 of the top 16 throws of all time - but she's on the downhill slide of her career because she's currently 36 years old. Wlodarczyk suffered a fully torn thigh muscle injury chasing down someone who tried to break into her car last Friday and still wants to compete in the 2024 Olympics. It may be a competitive event between Rogers (CAN), the Americans and Wlodarczyk (POL).

Tony Gonsolin adds more zeroes to the odometer to beat Angels

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/6/14/23168513/tony-gonsolin-more-zeroes-good-lord-dodgers-angels

Tony Gonsolin continued to run roughshod over the competition, and he had to be thanks to the Dodgers offense. Gonsolin lasted his deepest into a game in two seasons on Tuesday, making the Dodgers’ paltry offense hold up in a 2-0 win over the Angels at Dodger Stadium.

The Angels only managed one hit against Gonsolin, a fourth-inning single by Shohei Ohtani, but he was caught trying to steal second base. Gonsolin worked around a pair of walks over the rest of his night, and pitched into the seventh inning for the second time in his career.

Gonsolin allowed no runs in 6⅓ innings on Tuesday, striking out six, his fifth scoreless start of the season to lower his MLB-best ERA to 1.42. In six starts at home this season, Gonsolin has allowed three total runs in 33⅓ innings.
