Everyone knows that the coxswain is the shortest guy in a racing eight. But who is the second shortest? In this picture of Cal’s 1V8 boat, the second shortest guys are #1, #6, and #8 who are all 6’3”. Everyone else is taller including #3 Tim Roth (6’-8") and #5 Gennaro di Mauro (6’10”). This boat has two seniors, two juniors, and the rest are underclassmen - so the 1V8 boat should be great again next season.
I learned from my college sweetheart's Mexican family that the key is to make it with beef stock, which you won't see in any recipe. So I made it with this recipe, but added 4 cups of better-than-bullion beef flavor. It was and still is awesome.
chicken larb - easy, tasty, daughter requested "something Asian" and the family liked it
something like this (https://thewoksoflife.com/chicken-larb/) except we just put the chicken on a bed of greens instead of lettuce cups. served w/ a crunchy Asian slaw and drank up the open bottle of French cider that was probably just a so-so pairing.
we watched the first half of the Warriors game while we ate.
Watched "High Sierra" (1941) a movie I had never seen before. Apparently it was the movie that made Humphrey Bogart a star - and he's really quite good in it. Ida Lupino got top billing. Directed by Raoul Walsh, it's a tight movie about a heist - and filmed on location on the eastern Sierras off of Hwy 395. Not quite a great movie, say like Maltese Falcon, but still quite enjoyable - 16/19 WB.
Watched a couple of classic films over the weekend. John Ford's My Darling Clementine and Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory. Brilliant cinema photography highlight both. No one could or can frame a shot like Ford. The way he contrasts claustrophobic interiors with the expansive interiors of Monument Valley is remarkable. Kubrick's tracking shot of Kirk Douglas walking through the trenches is cinematic gold.
Manny Jacinto's been in some fairly small roles despite being so popular on The Good Place. Off the top of my head, he's a random goon in Bad Times at the El Royale and an attendant in Nine Perfect Strangers.
IMHO, rowing is a pain contest. It's who can set every muscle + lungs on fire the most over the course of a season. I have mad respect for those who follow this discipline.
I had a good friend who was on a women’s national champ heavyweight V8. In the winter when the river was frozen they would have erg (rowing machine) contests where if you didn’t throw up afterwards, you hadn’t gone hard enough…
agreed. i have friend who rowed as an undergrad at Penn and have heard the stories ...
while cycling is certainly more fun and you get the joy of descending, my impression is that competitive cycling and most endurance sports are very similar, ie how much pain can you subject your body too for longer than the other people.
Being a world tour, low level domestique is probably the worst barrier to entry to pay ratio. Just having to eat lactic acid all day. . . and make like $150k a year.
But on the other hand one can cycle for fun, but no one goes out and rows for fun.
Good to know! Since I've only seen you online, I didn't know you're short. But, what calling did you miss? Wait let me guess...the next Gilbert Gottfried?

I must have missed where Jesus condemned homosexuality. Which brings up the fact that I've been re-watching The West Wing. And last night I happened to watch "The Midterms", S2 E3. Near the end of the episode, Bartlet meets talk radio hosts in a room at the White House. He enters the room and everyone stands, except one woman, Jenna Jacobs (who is modeled after Dr. Laura Schlesinger). Bartlet's remarks are about the work that talk radio hosts do. He's distracted by the one person who remains seated, Dr. Jenna Jacobs.
President Josiah Bartlet: Forgive me, Dr. Jacobs, are you an M.D.?
Dr. Jenna Jacobs: A Ph.D.
Bartlet: A Ph.D.
Jacobs: Yes, sir.
Bartlet: In Psychology?
Jacobs: No, sir.
Bartlet: Theology?
Jacobs: No?
Bartlet: Social Work?
Jacobs: I have a Ph.D. in English Literature.
Bartlet: I'm asking because, on your show, people call in for advice, and you go by the name, Dr. Jacobs, on your show. I didn't know if maybe your listeners were confused by that and assumed you had advanced training in psychology, theology, or healthcare.
Jacobs: I don't believe they are confused, no, sir.
Bartlet: Good. I like your show. I like how you call homosexuality an abomination.
Jacobs: I don't call homosexuality an abomination, Mr. President, the bible does.
Bartlet: Yes it does, Leviticus
Jacobs: 18:22
Bartlet: Chapter and verse. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7 . . . While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it OK to call the police. Here's one that's really important, because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes us unclean, Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother, Jon, for planting crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?
President Josiah Bartlet: Think about those questions, would you? One last thing, while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tightass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits. [Bartlet stares at Jacobs, until she finally rises to her feet]
I know of a very good deed he did for a guy I knew as he was walking back to his apartment after a game. I had heard that he was a very conservative Christian.
I have been seeing these "He Gets Us" ads at PNC park on my last few outings. It was particularly large on Saturday when it was also a Faith Day at the ballpark, but it makes an interesting juxtaposition to the rainbow lighted building in the background on Friday for Pride. The two things are obviously not mutually exclusive but the bulk of the American evangelists don't feel that way.
Peacock (the NBC streaming service) now has a game a week. Their schtick is all about how that game will start before noon, thus changing that unlucky game's start time like 2-3 weeks out.
Giants split series with Marlins by beating them 5-1 on Sunday, end road trip 5-5. Jakob Junis (6IP, 2H, 8k, 2BB, 1ER) has been outstanding as a new Giant. He relies heavily on his slider that is deadly against RH batters.
Hoping the trend continues in Boston. The Celtics have had a knack for losing home games during these playoffs, win one and home court is back. Hard to not see this series going 6 or 7 games now
Jaylen couldn't keep up that level (and also credit to the Dubs' defense, including Green getting into JB's head)...Celtics have not played that well at home in the last two rounds and the Warriors got that streak about winning road playoffs games...
I think the defense was the bigger catalyst. Iguodala being out was probably a blessing. More minutes for Payton and Porter helped lock down the Celtics.

Best TD celebration
Vic Enwere - Texas at Berkeley. Dropped the ball at the 1 yard line for a touchback.
Horns down by Chad Hansen
Honorable Mention: Lavelle Hawkins’ “hawk” celebration was a good one. And Patrick Laird’s book-reading one.

Paths of Glory is a film class staple. Saw it in my frosh philosophy course at Cal, Existentialism in Literature and Film.
Those are both great movies.
Top Gun: Maverick
Watched it with Twist on Saturday night who hadn't seen the original in like 30 years. He enjoyed it but was confused by a lot.
Honestly, what could one possibly get confused by in that movie?!?
that sounds like Twist in most situations
"Hangman" is played by Glen Powell, who I kept thinking during the film "that dude looks like Patrick Laird"

"Fritz" didn't get much air time, but he's played by Manny Jacinto (Jason, the Blake Bortles-loving faux-monk from the Good Place)
Seems pretty clear there was a subplot that got cut out with him. They wouldn't cast a guy like that in a role with no lines.
Manny Jacinto's been in some fairly small roles despite being so popular on The Good Place. Off the top of my head, he's a random goon in Bad Times at the El Royale and an attendant in Nine Perfect Strangers.
what? I didn't even notice that.
the other non-speaking pilot roles are basically cameos/extras - Harvard, Yale, Fritz, Halo
Oh I'll have to watch out for that when I go with Nos 2 and 3.
"Bob" is played by Lewis Pullman, the son of Bill.

Rooster is played by Miles Teller (Whiplash). Teller is married to Keleigh Sperry.

that was fun to watch. as the 3rd quarter lead ballooned, you got the sense they were much more serious about it this time.
