Russia blows up Kakhova dam, the main cooling water for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), to slow down a Ukrainian counter-offensive. There is enough water to cool the plant for a few days, per the IAEA. There is also an emergency back-up cooling pond - but if the Russian blow that up - the nuclear meltdown of ZNPP's six reactors would likely happen.

Shoe repair used to be pretty common. I used to commute from the top of the Hong Kong escalator to the bottom and back everyday - which is about a kilometer. I would wear out work shoes enough that I had to get them resoled. These days, it's tough to find a shoe repair place.

Model Shoe Renew still exists in Berkeley. Same location for the last 45+ years.

Expand full comment

There are many less show repair places than there used to be. In addition, sneakers, running shoes, etc. that most people wear most of the time, are not really repairable.

Belize has many shoe cobblers. In a country were Amazon does not deliver and no corporate retailers exist, people actually get paid to fix stuff there. It is pretty refreshing!

There are several species of "sole", "halibut", "dab", "turbot", "plaice", "brill" and "flounder", "fluke", and others. While all these flatfish are related, one halibut can be closer related to a turbot than another halibut. Making matters worse, you can have different names for the same fish depending on the country/region. And some have the multiple names for the same fish. So you have to be more specific to the species of fish. Even then, you may have to get super specific because a filet of dover sole in in San Francisco (Pacific dover sole) will be a different fish than than one in London (Atlantic dover sole).

As a boy growing up in the Eighties, I was all about movies and television that portrayed fictionalized accounts of the Vietnam war. Well from a fun point of view: "Time to put in practice what you dreamed about"

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3YBmS5oaNwU

Expand full comment

Well if you don't listen, the lyrics:

The lawns grow plush in the hinterlands

The perfect little setting for the one night stands.

The drapes are drawn and the lights are out

It's the time to put in practice what you've dreamed about.

Well she can show you what you must do

To be more like people better than you.

Amateur hour goes on and on

When you turn pro you know

She'll let you know

Amateur hour goes on and on

When you turn pro

You know she tells you so.

Girls grow tops to go topless in

While we sit and count the hairs that blossom from our chins.

Our voices change at a rapid pace

I could start a song a tenor and then end as bass.

So choose your partners everyone

If you hesitate the good ones are gone.

Amateur hour goes on and on

Dance

Laugh

Wine

Dine and talk and sing

But those cannot replace what is the real thing

It's a lot like playing the violin

You cannot start off and be Yehudi Menuhin.

So Amateur hour goes on and on
