Welcome to the DBD, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like…
Java
Tumpak Sewu is a waterfall that is in Java, Indonesia. The waterfall is overshadowed by Semeru, an active volcano - the highest mountain in Java. The Glidik River, which flows down Semeru, is the primary water source for the waterfall.
I'm wearing a supper nice pocket T-shirt I forgot I had! With a pocket! And the evil and dumb mice from that funny TV show Pinky & the Brain sewn on with fancy embroidery! Wow!
not the thing you hear east coast people talk about too often. fires in Ontario are causing us to have unusually bad air quality in NYC last few days. somehow NYC is among the worst of affected areas.
As soon as I opened the door to our building to get the paper this morning I could smell the smoke. It's been visibly noticeable for a few days but today you can definitely smell it too. I still went out for a run but consciously took it easy. When crossing the bridge into DC you could barely see the outline of National Cathedral which is less than three miles away. Also noticed a lot more people back to wearing masks as they walk down the street.
The scenes at Yankee Stadium last night were remarkable
AQI in MD is approaching 200 and will apparently be even worse overnight. The sky has been hazy for about a week due to these wildfires, but today is the first time the Dept of Health has recommended people avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. Of course, the drought across the whole east coast isn't helping the wildfires...
At 2 p.m., the air quality index in the New York City region was 324 – the worst since the Environmental Protection Agency began recording air quality measurements in 1999.
clearly it is bad, but not sure how that compares to when Bay Area AQI was very bad.
i am basically a walking art project. they took the metal plates out of collarbone, and i am held together w/ HOT GLUE!!
there are some self-dissolving stitches too, but i dont have to go back for anything other than a quick checkup.
also, the recovery is much better than expected. didnt need any drugs to fall asleep, mostly having a normal day w/ the exception of not being able to workout for a few days.
You are becoming wiser in the ways of all relationships, not just marriage. This comes under the heading of Picking Your Battles or Choosing the Hill to Die On.
Everyday. Wake up by clock radio alarm (KQED, NPR); clock radio in the bathroom set to KNBR (sports talk). In the car while running errands, and 3x commuting with KQED, KNBR with an occasional flip to classical (KDFC) or jazz (KCSM). And on the drive home after Cal games!
Yup, been listening to Live105 on my commute the past couple days. I am surprised at the audio quality of FM, having been listening to SiriusXM almost exclusively for the past few years.
Daily. I have an old clock radio on the table by my bed and listen as I fall asleep and when I wake up in the morning. Also have an old radio in the kitchen so I catch up on the news listening to the local news radio station while making dinner. I'm on the fringe of the flight pattern to National Airport and notice that the kitchen radio reception is affected when a plane comes more directly over.
Just because I was in New Jersey this past weekend, Delaware National Recreation Area. It is also in Pennsylvania as the Delaware River forms the boundary between the two states.
Well... near here (Bay Area) I'd say Point Reyes - and especially Limatour Beach. It's always been an awesome place to visit - I attended on my first quarter at Cal (Drake's Beach) - but my roommate grew up in Novato, so I think that was why, but we've been there many, many times.
People know about the Outer Banks to the string of popular beaches down to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina (eg, Wrightsville, Carolina, Emerald, Ocean, Atlantic, Oak Island, Topsail, Kure). But there is a long barrier island with no roads and no access except by infrequent boat. Its isolation means that it is supposedly an unspoiled natural paradise. Frankly, I've never gone.
NY has a lot of national monuments and scenic areas, but no full national parks (i dont think)
the most amazing thing in NY is the Adirondack Park that is protected by the state constitution and an interesting mix of private and public lands. at almost 6 million acres it is greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Park combined.
I was helping out a corporate partner on an M&A deal one time and the junior associate on the deal revealed to me that she had only slept about an hour a day the last three days, and all at her desk! I got worried that she might just pass out and die, so I urged her to just go home and sleep, which she did.
Early in my career, I had to do some testing at one of the projects near oakland colosseum. There were like 1000 dead flies on the floor, and the place massively reeked. I took a deep breath, went it and did the minute of testing I needed to do, and got out. I felt bad for the structural engineer who had to spend much more time doing his investigation.
A six-foot wide hole in the roof of a small building caused by a pressurized tank that ruptured, launched itself into the air, and landed on said roof about 800 feet away. Fortunately it happened in the middle of the night so no one was injured.
Witnessed a teacher verbally abusing a student. The teacher left at the end of the school year for a job in the private sector. I constantly verbally abused student but never out loud.

I used to put mayo in a burger but recently I haven't been doing it.
I do put it on a sandwich before putting it on the panini press. I usually use sourdough bread and then whatever lunch meat and cheese I have, along with lettuce if I have some.
There is some natural separation when prepared mustard sits for a while. Shake it before you squeeze it. It might reduce or eliminate that water. I don't eat yellow mustard as a rule. Dijon or go home.
I probably shoulda had one Friday morning. But because I had almost no sleep during the flight I eventually crashed for 4.5 hours at my sister's and BIL's.
back in the day when Peet's coffee was still something of a local thing, i used to be a frequent buyer of their Sulawesi Kalosi blend. not quite Java, but close.
Finished The Diplomat last night. Really enjoyed it. 17/19 WB. Can't wait for season 2. We'll see if I'm still subscribing to Netflix then or if I get fed up with the non main home location checks or they charge me extra.
There's demotion and then there's DEMOTION. Blue Jay pitcher Alek Manoah - who was a finalist for a Cy Young last year - got knocked down past AAA, AA, high-A, and Single-A leagues to rookie league. I guess that's what happens when you give up 7 hits, 6 runs, 1 BB on 48 pitches and get only 1 out.
On pace for a 34-128 record, the worst win percentage (.210) in the modern era by a large margin. The current record is .235, held by none other than the A's (back when they were in Philly in 1916)

That's quite unpleasant. You need an N95 when you go outside. Your lungs will hurt, inside or out.
Yikes. That's probably worse than the Smoke Bowl vs. Wazzu. IIRC, the AQI for that game was "only" around 280. I don't think it exceeded 300.
I think it was under 200 when the game started. Well that's what they said.
Right. The entity responsible for the health of their student-athletes and spectators with a financial stake in having the game played.
AQI was well over 200 during the day. I thought it was irresponsible to play that game under the conditions.
surgery update ..
i am basically a walking art project. they took the metal plates out of collarbone, and i am held together w/ HOT GLUE!!

I’ve only “known”’you for a few years here, but you’ve had more than your fair share of injuries and surgeries!
indeed .. 2 achilles and 2 collarbones in 10-ish years.
i did "retire" from outdoor riding, so. hopefully collarbone will stay intact
Best wishes with your injuries.
They didn't use medical-grade duct tape?
there is some patch covering up the wound, but apparently it is some glue that will just peel off eventually.

That time you completely reversed your opinion
i recently had a "revelation" in terms of my relationship w/ my wife. i realized that it does me no good to be "right" even if it is true.
so the "reversal" is not needing to be right all the time (or caring).
Oh yeah totally. There is no judge, just the two of you…
You are becoming wiser in the ways of all relationships, not just marriage. This comes under the heading of Picking Your Battles or Choosing the Hill to Die On.
With the missus I learned long ago to pick no battles and die on no hills.
But has she also had the revelation?
no .. but i am not caring (trying at least)
Ooooh…that’s a tough one. Good on ya, tho. Higher road, and all that.
I think you are correct, BUT - that ain't easy to do.
How often do you listen to the radio via radiowave (ie, not streaming digitally on phone or computer)?
I don't think I've used a regular radio in 20 years, car or otherwise.
Never listen to radio anymore but maybe now that Live 105 is back?
I listen to the radio M-F during my commute to work. I usually just listen to NPR but sometimes I’ll switch to music on the radio.
KALX - 90.7 am I the only one? It's that or random selection of the 7,000 songs off my phone.
Usually only in the car. I'll rotate between music, NPR, and KNBR/95.7 sports talk.
Same grouping. And now that Live 105 is back…!
Yup, been listening to Live105 on my commute the past couple days. I am surprised at the audio quality of FM, having been listening to SiriusXM almost exclusively for the past few years.
I heard that they came back. I was never an alt rock person, but I did love listening to Alex Bennett in the morning.
Now that was a long time ago!
But I don’t drive often. Also new car has free Sirius for a few months, so binging that.
680 for sports when I am driving
I'll listen to NPR in the mornings when I drive Cf98 to preschool and I'll listen if I'm driving around to run errands
When I'm in my pickup or in the car. Otherwise, not at all.
Same.
most days in the car. not for very long though, 10 min here and there.
some combo of NPR, the classical NPR affiliate, the local classic rock station if it is not a 20-min commercial break.

Lassen. One of the least visited parks in California but we'll worth a visit.
Something messed up that you saw at work
My boss what me to do unsafe stuff when we moved - I quit that day. An reproduction wood shop, Victorian bathroom stuff.
There was that time someone pooped in the urinal. That's pretty much where the story ends.
I was helping out a corporate partner on an M&A deal one time and the junior associate on the deal revealed to me that she had only slept about an hour a day the last three days, and all at her desk! I got worried that she might just pass out and die, so I urged her to just go home and sleep, which she did.

Saw a stop sign that broke off and flew 100 feet during a windstorm. Realized it could have taken my head off.

What instantly ruins a hamburger?
Pickle relish
Tomatoes
What?!?!?!??!
HE SAID "TOMATOES"
Well maybe not all tomatoes but I often find tomatoes to just be flavorless and only add to a wet and soggy bun.
True, they need to be ripe, and one slice is enough.
If it’s my BBQ and I’m making the burger and picking the ingredients I’ll eat it with tomatoes but if I’m out to eat, I always order without tomatoes because they often aren’t very good.
And, cheese between it and the bun.
Animal protein ;-)
Hahaha
Mayo. Hot mayo is an abomination
Hot mayo helps elote become delicious
I used to put mayo in a burger but recently I haven't been doing it.
I do put it on a sandwich before putting it on the panini press. I usually use sourdough bread and then whatever lunch meat and cheese I have, along with lettuce if I have some.

me too. i ask for mayo w/ burgers and fries.

Haven’t seen that since the 70s. I recall seeing ketchup and catsup next to each other in the store shelves and being confused.
no, just ketchup
Squeeze mustard water
There is some natural separation when prepared mustard sits for a while. Shake it before you squeeze it. It might reduce or eliminate that water. I don't eat yellow mustard as a rule. Dijon or go home.

Watched the first episode of "Cunk on Earth (2023)" - hella of funny I thought - wife liked it, but didn't laugh as loud as I did.
It gave me and the wife a lot of chuckles. Great stuff. It required the right person and Diane Morgan was brilliant.

I've never seen three. I've seen two, because of a bobble/drop and then followed up by an errant throw, but never three.
MLB teams that are spending below league average to be above 0.500:

MLB teams that are spending above league average to be below 0.500:

Padres are absolutely terrible and difficult to watch.

No, I’m pretty sure that both of them (the teams) are from the US ;-)
But, the players: yeah. Wonder what it’s like if you’re from Saskatchewan or Finland and end up playing hockey in those environs.
