It is difficult to save when everything is so expensive today. My childcare cost was at $2,600 a month, thankfully I only pay $1,300 a month now as my daughter is in UTK. SDGE rates for electricity are some of the highest in the country, same for water from San Diego County Water Authority. Throw in the cost of living/inflation increasing faster than wages and it is easy to put off saving money.

Expand full comment

my take is that we transitioned to a service economy and borrow-spend-repeat cycle such that people dont work at the same place their whole lives, move around a lot more, and the cheap credit allows you to have stuff so you push off savings till later (or never).

i am sure there a lot of other layers and factors in the there as well such global competition, etc etc. making the path to retirement more murky than in the past.

My sister had got to female guinea pigs when she was a kid, maybe 10 or so. Well, it turned out they weren't both female and one of them had babies. To everybody's horror, my sister didn't find out that she had babies until she found their dead, half-eaten bodies in the cage. Apparently, infanticide is not uncommon amongst rodents, especially first-time guinea pig mothers.

The San Francisco Giants 5-4 comeback win over the Colorado Rockies culminated in a dramatic, bold, gorgeous, purple-mountain-majestic bunt from platoon catcher Patrick Bailey.

Bailey, who took over for Blake Sabol behind the plate in the 7th, hadn’t stepped into the batter’s box all evening. After ripping two doubles and a triple in his Coors Field premiere, the rookie catcher dealt the fatal blow not with a blast but a delicate dink: a 1-out safety squeeze called from the bench against Colorado reliever Justin Lawrence.

The Dodgers once again blew a lead, losing in walk-off fashion to the Reds on back-to-back nights, this time an 8-6 loss on Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

The one man who left Tuesday’s poor pitching performance unscathed, Evan Phillips, was the loser on Wednesday, surrendering a walk-off two-run bomb to Will Benson in the bottom of the ninth. The Dodgers have lost fourth straight games for the first time in 2023.

Just as it was last year for Cal, two throwers were the first to earn All-American honors; however, the accolades came earlier in the competition this time around as juniors Jeff Duensing and Ivar Moisander cracked the top-16 to earn their first career All-American honors.
