On the back of the "Aluminum" DBD, I baked some potatoes, chopped up some chives, fried some bacon, and put out the butter and sour cream and salt. So simple and yet the family was like "why don't we have these more often?"

Wife made another in the recent line of meatless meals: Roasted sweet potatoes & onions w/black beans in Mole sauce, served over Spanish rice, with Mexican sour cream, cilantro & cotija cheese as garnishes. I paired it with Zinfandel, which worked really well, better than I thought it would.

What's the most miserable sporting event you have been to? Not results on the field - but gameday experience - rain, parking, horrible fans, etc.

Expand full comment

Traffic and parking at a couple of Cal games is right up there, but for consistent post-game misery, try to get away from Autzen Stadium. Worst post-game traffic anywhere in the Pac.

Expand full comment

It took me 3 hours to get out of Arrowhead Stadium Parking lot after the Black Coaches Classic in 2003 (Cal vs Kansas State in Kansas City).

I am usually out of Berkeley 25 minutes after I get in my car.

Indi 500 -

you have park at least a couple miles away on race day. then walk for at least an hour to get to your seats

there are no alcohol sales so EVERY SINGLE PERSON is carrying the maximal sized cooler that you are allowed to bring w/ about a case of beer. your arms are literally falling off since you are carrying all this beer.

in the end we didnt even drink it all, so we started selling them for about a $1/can on the way out since we didnt want to walk back to the car w/ them.

if the one hour walk back to the car wasnt bad enough, there was another 2-3 hours of traffic to get out of Indi.

2010 Big Game was in the pouring rain and the result on the field was even worse.

For me, two games: Cal losing to stanfurd in 2007, took my sister who was visiting to her first Big Game, and there is no fucking way we should have lost to them, unlike the SC game, 'cause SC was actually good, unlike 'furd.

Second was 2001 ALCS game 4 A's vs Yankees, up 2-1, end up losing, Dye breaks his leg after hitting a foul ball, and I lost my favorite, and best fitting hat that day at the Coliseum. Blah.

My mother’s side is midwestern Irish Catholic and ND grads so I grew up a big ND fan. Went to a ND-Stanford game at Stanford stadium once. The Stanford band mocked the potato famine at halftime, ND lost, and then on the way out to our car after a drunk Stanford fan (of course, a young douche looking white guy in a polo shirt) kept screaming at us / mocking us. Finally my uncle turned to him and said “Boy, if you don’t shut the fuck up right now I am going to beat your ass.” The guy immediately turned around and left - only silver lining of a shit day

Well, there was the ‘92 freedom bowl - my triumphant return to Southern California after a pretty crap first semester in grad school, and got to watch SC just sort of fuck around taking a well deserved L against Fresno State as we all stood in nasty cold rain in Anaheim stadium. Or the ‘00 kickoff classic in which we were surrounded by a bunch of asshole Penn State fans* in the old Meadowlands and ended up leaving early to beat traffic (I was amazed my wife agreed to come to that). Various cold early season DC United games. Or the ‘17 SC - Oregon State game where it was unclear whether the bigger risk for passing out was boredom or sitting in the direct sun when it was over 100F (leaving early for a Dodgers game was a significant improvement).

Cal vs Texas in the Holiday Bowl 2010 + Cal vs Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl 2009 - back to back bowl losses in San Diego; cold (underdressed - it's San Diego!), miserable team that really didn't want to be there.

Walking back to the car after that Holiday Bowl a couple Texas fans yelled to me that Rick Perry was going to win the 2012 presidential election. Probably the weirdest trash talk I've ever received at a game.

A friend of mine was at a Cal ASU game down there and happened to walk by their rooting section. Someone yelled at him, "hey Berkeley, go read a book." Others joined in.

We were at an @ ASU game when we were young and the Cal section was right up against some very obnoxious ASU fans who were berating the Cal section all game long. Sometime in the second half my mom had had enough, stood up, pointed at one particularly annoying man and yelled as loud as she could "See kids! This is why you need to study hard in school, so you don't end up at a place like Arizona State!" She sat back down and the whole Cal section around us loudly cheered. The ASU section was remarkably quiet towards the Cal fans for the remainder of the game

The worst have been weather-related. The 2007 USC game in a cold, endless, November downpour while their band plays Tribute to Troy on repeat for 3 and a half hours. The 2011 UCLA game where it was about 100 degrees in the Rose Bowl under an oppressive sun for the whole game (although Maynard's 5 turnovers didn't help).

I don't think I've ever had a miserable experience at a baseball game despite going to dozens of games at parks all over the country.

Expand full comment

Need to stick it out through a baseball game at Oregon State in a "slight drizzle" that was really the equivalent to standing in front of an open port of a fire hydrant, trying to shoot the game without destroying a camera body.

Expand full comment

eh, it wasn't that cold, and while the rain was fairly constant, it wasn't a downpour.

Expand full comment

RE: Downpour. Sez you. It was not just constant, it was heavy. That's close enough to qualify as a downpour.

It was not even "heavy", but it was constant - the only home heavy downpour was that game against Oregon, but it was warm, and I think the only banana game in uniforms. Also, we won that game.

Maybe you were partially shielded by the Press Box; I was not.

It was heavy.

And the one thing that stuck with me in that game: super obnoxious SC fan siting nearby, standing up yelling "I didn't pay money to see us win like this!!!" on the final drive of USC, up by 7, clearly Carroll was just keeping the ball away from the Bears.

What an asshole.

The '07 U$C game was truly awful.

Expand full comment

That one is high up on my list, but also 2010 @ $C was pretty bad. We were down 42-0 at half, one of my friends blacked out at the stadium so we had to take care of him for the majority of the game. Got lost leaving the stadium trying to find a ride back to the hotel as I had always gone previously with someone who had car. Eventually paid a passing airport van $75 to get us all back to our hotel in Korea town and then had to work very hard to convince said friend he needed to stay in the hotel while we went out for misery beers. Found a bar that ended up being a Korean mob bar where we were not so subtly told we were not welcome and that we should go to their "other bar" across the street. Made for a good story, but man was that a miserable day.

So many to choose from I'm going with Ohio State's visit to Memorial Stadium in 2013. Having opposing fans take over our home was beyond depressing, We had Buckeye fans to our right, to our left, behind us and in front of us. Lighten up, Francis, its just an opinion. While I agree that that game sucked on many levels, having low expectations going in prevented me from feeling any long term grief over it.
