Hey non-engineer nerds - wanna watch an American engineer try to design and manufacture a product in the US. It's long but I found it very interesting and information-dense
Today I'm trying to break up my normal snack routine of roasted almonds or low fat/low sugar yoghurt with wheat germ. Today, I had tinned pilchards in water. It wasn't exactly yummy, but not every meal is a sumptuous banquet.
We have free Peanut M&Ms in an acrylic tumbler that dispenses by turning a knob. For whatever reason, one turn of the knob only releases a paltry few. Two turns releases way too many, no matter how careful you are with that second turn. Oh well. 🤷♂️
Want Want crackers used to be one of my clients. They would give me these baskets of samples and the day would end with empty plastic wrappers and a diabetic coma.
Cool Ranch Doritos are a fine choice, but a better one is Spicy Nacho Doritos. It's not "Flamin' Hot", but it's got plenty of kick and that oh-so-wonderful nacho cheese flavor.
I love Cool Ranch. Spicy Nacho Doritos are fine, but I prefer Cool Ranch. I also like the Spicy Sweet Chili ones as well. When they're on sale, I usually buy one Cool Ranch and one Spicy Sweet Chili.
Unless the actual game comes down to being close at the end, I'm going to guess I won't watch much of the NBA finals. Though with No 1 and No 2 flying in for No 3's graduation, I'm sure it'll be on.
UCSC only gives 5 tickets to each graduate (at least for Cowell), we have a ticket problem for No 3's ceremony. Me, his mom, No 1, No 2, No 2's GF, No 3's GF, and my mom. So at the very least No 2's GF will not be able to go the ceremony. Going to have to have a discussion on who else will have to miss it.
No 1 already volunteered to sit out since it might be a little weird if my mom couldn't go (for her to hang with No 2's GF during the ceremony since they've only met once). But No 3 wants both is brothers there. We're probably all going to go down to grab lunch even if not everyone can go to the ceremony.
When I graduated from UCSC, I told people to come to my department graduation rather than my college one. Felt a lot more personal, and I certainly spent more time at the department than I did at my "college" past the first year.
But I'm not sure if all departments do that. I was in Theater Arts, so they obviously have access to the good theater spaces.
I don't recall there being a graduation for my department when I graduated. But that could be because I didn't feel the same pull that you did for your department.
There def wasn't one for a BME degree, I just had the one at Cowell. I don't remember there being a limit on tickets either, but I only had three attending so it was not of my concern
I understand that all UCSC colleges will have commencement on the Upper East Field. East Field is a big space, indeed. I wonder if the tickets guarantee the bearer a chair and this is why tickets are allocated. I wonder what would happen if someone showed up but stood off to the side, for instance.
I wonder where they plan on putting the stage. If the stage is on the west side and the ocean is behind it, that would be optimal for standing on the hill. Don't remember how far away the hill is though
Franco was arrested Nov. 10 in San Juan de la Maguana after an altercation in a parking lot. No one was injured during the fight, and the gun, a semiautomatic Glock 19, was found in Franco's vehicle, according to a statement from the Dominican Public Prosecutor's Office.
The gun was registered in the name of Franco's uncle, prosecutors said in the statement. After the arrest, Antonio Garcia Lorenzo, one of Franco's lawyers, said that because the gun was licensed, "There's nothing illegal about it."
------------
I assume his uncle wasn't in the car, which would make it illegal wouldn't it? Unless it was proven his uncle accidentally left it in the car. But even then...
Way back when in early May, Mike Yastrzemski’s batting average sat at .284, his OPS as high as .878, after a 2-hit, 2 RBI game against Colorado.
Yaz’s solid month at the plate was one of the reasons for the San Francisco Giants hot start. His performance forced Bob Melvin’s hand in terms of roster decisions, inserting himself at the top of the line-up to replace a lost LaMonte Wade Jr. Opportunities for Luis Matos to get reps in right dried up because the veteran was so solid on both sides of the baseball.
An 8-4 decision on a getaway day Sunday secured five wins out of six for Oakland in their first road series of the year.
Oakland's first run came in the very first inning, when with two outs a ball hit back to Glacier starter Rayne Supple was thrown away, scoring Esai Santos who was on second base. In what started as an early season trend, the Ballers are now making it look like a rule: they win if they score first, now 10-0 on the year.
The Athletics managed to put together a solid weekend. After splitting the first two game of the weekend series against Baltimore in West Sacramento, the A’s took the rubber match on Sunday afternoon with a quality, all-around team win to take the series and end the homestand on a winning note.
The Dodgers were able to give Clayton Kershaw ample run support on Sunday, as they avoided a sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals by taking the finale by a 7-3 final score.
The Dodgers immediately put a man in scoring position to begin the game against Cardinals right-hander Michael McGreevy, as Shohei Ohtani lined a double on the first pitch of the game. The Dodgers’ 2-4 hitters couldn’t provide any further offense as Ohtani was left on base to close the half inning.
Apparently the Cardinals intro video of the game was Matt Adams hitting a HR off Kershaw in the 2014 NLDS. Kershaw when interviewed after the game: “I think it’s a little bush league, but I don’t expect anything less from these guys. So, it’s no worries.” Kershaw pitched his best game of the season and only had 1 inning where he struggled (last). As if he didn't need any more motivation.
Reminds me of 2 years ago when the Padres were playing well, then after a win played the Crying Kershaw meme after a playoff game 3 years ago. Then they go on and suck big time the rest of the season. With a big 3 or 4 game series coming up starting tonight, let's see if the Pads do that again.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Recent Cal graduate Jack Alexy collected his second gold medal of the 2025 Toyota National Championships after a first-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle.
After securing the top seed in the morning session, Alexy doubled down on his preliminary performance by posting a lifetime best time of 21.36 in the event, marking the fastest time in the world this season.
BERKELEY – Federal District Judge Claudia Wilken formally approved the NCAA House Settlement on Friday, setting the stage for a new revenue-sharing model that will accelerate the profound changes underway in intercollegiate athletics.
The settlement allows institutions to provide up to an estimated $20.5 million for 2025-26 - with a 4% increase in subsequent years - to revenue-share with their student-athletes, which will be distributed primarily in the form of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) licensing agreements.
BERKELEY – California women's team rowers Minou Bouman and Julia Hunt-Davis were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-American Second Team it was announced today. The CRCA All-American Awards recognize the most outstanding collegiate rowers and coxswains across all NCAA divisions and the lightweight category. Rowers selected have demonstrated elite athletic performance, leadership, consistency, and dedication throughout the season, earning distinction among the top rowers in the nation.
Six-time USA women's 800m champion and California track & field alumna Alysia Montaño (formerly Johnson) is set to officially be recognized as the 2012 Olympic women's 800m bronze medalist following the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) Friday dismissal of the appeal of former Russian athlete Ekaterina Guliyev, who received a four-year doping ban in 2024 that also included a disqualification of all results from July 17, 2012 to October 20, 2014. Guliyev, who originally finished third as Ekaterina Poistogova at the Olympic Games in London, was elevated to silver after the disqualification of former teammate Mariya Savinova, who won the race but was subsequently banned in 2017 for doping.
"The Olo cocktail is named for a new color of supersaturated blue-green discovered by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, this year. It’s not a color readily seen in the real world, but that didn’t stop Ramirez from dreaming up how it would taste. The Olo encompasses gin, tarragon, a kiwi cordial, lime and a cucumber seaweed foam."
It is encouraging to see success with recruiting, especially on the o-line. A good o-line can make a good quarterback look excellent or great and can do wonders for the running game.

SNACKS
Today I'm trying to break up my normal snack routine of roasted almonds or low fat/low sugar yoghurt with wheat germ. Today, I had tinned pilchards in water. It wasn't exactly yummy, but not every meal is a sumptuous banquet.
When I'm at work - assorted nuts and raisins, fruit (currently bananas and oranges)
When I'm at home - assorted nuts and raisins are usually available at home, too. Also, fruit, but also rice cakes and peanut butter.
I'm a savory snacks over sweet snacks person. Hard for me to say no if there are nice salty snacks around.
We have free Peanut M&Ms in an acrylic tumbler that dispenses by turning a knob. For whatever reason, one turn of the knob only releases a paltry few. Two turns releases way too many, no matter how careful you are with that second turn. Oh well. 🤷♂️
oh that could be dangerous.
Oh a big bin of Asian Rice crackers would do me in.
Want Want crackers used to be one of my clients. They would give me these baskets of samples and the day would end with empty plastic wrappers and a diabetic coma.
Kettle chips (Parmesean or Jalepeño or just regular krinkle). They got rid of some of the cool flavors they used to have
Cheetos
Sour Cream and Onion Lays
Zapp's Voodoo
And the previously mentioned Doritos
are just some of my favorites
Cool Ranch Doritos are a fine choice, but a better one is Spicy Nacho Doritos. It's not "Flamin' Hot", but it's got plenty of kick and that oh-so-wonderful nacho cheese flavor.
