Team-wise: Men finished 21st overall (12 points) and Women finished 18th (13 points)

Florida swept the team titles with 74 points (men) and 54 points (women)

i liquidated my BTC holdings about a week ago finally after a couple good years.

happy to just watch it bounce around now. initially i bought some just so i would "learn to play the game" but not interested in it as an investment or anything else, yet ...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

try today's Semantle .. if you have not already.

i gave up but regret doing so

What's a sports record that will NEVER be broken?

SGBear's avatar

The 11+ hour Wimbledon match of Isner vs. Mahut. It can't happen again because they implemented tie breaker rules. You can relive all of it here.

the number of technical fouls Draymond will rack up over the course of his career ...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

well maybe not. i was reading about Karl Malone and how far in the lead he is

Karl - 332

Draymond - 131 as of 2021

(if we're looking at modern baseball records rather than records like Cy Young's 749 complete games pitched)

Cal Ripken Jr's 2,632 consecutive games played

SGBear's avatar

The entire current active MLB roster combined has 500 CG with 144 pitchers taking 127,272 innings pitched to get there (>87 seasons worth of games). The guy who has the fastest pace of CG per innings pitched is Corey Kluber (out of pitchers with more than 100 IP). If Corey continued to do CG at that pace, he will tie Cy Young's mark shortly after his 237th birthday.

sycasey's avatar

Records related to complete games and pitcher wins seem unattainable at this point. No one really values those things anymore.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Maybe Hershiser's 59 consecutive innings streak won't be broken, especially now that spider-tack is banned.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I could actually see that one being broken someday but by an elite reliever, TBH.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Hmm...maybe. I guess I was thinking from a starter, but you make a good point about an elite reliever.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I mean, it would take an epic, epic season…like 50 some-odd consecutive appearances, but with these guys throwing harder and harder, and strikeouts so much bigger an issue, then who knows.

Did Hershiser give up any unearned runs in the streak at all, or ALL zeros?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Doubtful anyone even comes close to that one...only cal alum Marcus Semien played all 162 last year...rare for players these days to play everyday.

Wiata78's avatar

Edwin Moses 122 consecutive victories over nine plus years.

Tangtpt's avatar

Joe DiMaggio's consecutive games hit record.

FiatSlug's avatar

I was gonna say that. I remember the last person to really threaten DiMaggio's record was Pete Rose in the summer of '78 (?). If Rose couldn't do it, there's no one now that could.

Let's put it this way: the hitter that will break Di Maggio's consecutive game hitting streak probably hasn't been born yet.

goldenone's avatar

Rickey Henderson's stolen base record.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Out of the things currently listed, I think this might be most likely to be broken only because MLB is actively trying to change the game. The larger bases by itself won't do it, but I can imagine additional rule changes (concerning a pitcher's ability to pick off, perhaps) that might encourage the stolen bases.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think the proposed rule of not being able to attempt a pickoff 3 times is lame.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Every passing record that Tom Brady sets once he retires.

All time NFL rushing record set by Emmitt Smith will never be broken.

CruzinBears's avatar

Surprised no one mentioned Cal Ripkin Jr's consecutive starts, no one is even close and I don't see anyone ever reaching it with the increased focus on player health

was responsible for flight delays on 2 consecutive weekend trips only 14 days apart.

a perfectly normal 300p flight from FLL > LGA gets delayed 5-6 hours and eventually cancelled. i dont think the rain or thunderstorms were particularly bad but the system seems particularly fragile right now.

stayed in FLL an extra night and took flight first Mon morning w/ minimal hassles. same thing happened on the way to Nashville 2 weeks ago but in that case it took away a full day from long weekend trip.

Mid 80s and humid in the mid-Atlantic, in contrast to the pretty glorious weather we've enjoyed for most of the last few weeks. It looks like we're being spared from the incineration going on throughout much of the country today.

SGBear's avatar

It's going to be 100 degrees tomorrow and close to it today. With our humidity, that's miserable weather. Heat Index of 115 degrees.

dcblue's avatar

Not that bad here but still warm and humid. As a skinny guy I don't sweat all that much but was sweating up a storm this morning after my run/

Another pair of Ferrari DNFs allowed Red Bull to finish 1-2 at a rather dull Azerbaijan Grand Prix

https://www.thedrive.com/news/max-verstappen-wins-2022-f1-azerbaijan-gp-leclercs-engine-fails

Max Verstappen just won the 2022 F1 Azerbaijan GP, following both Ferrari drivers exiting the race before the halfway point, increasing his lead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the driver's championship. The Azerbaijan GP got off to an exciting start, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez jumping ahead of Leclerc, who started from P1, after he suffered an early lockup. However, Leclerc was able to not only hold off Red Bull's Verstappen but continue to create distance. Behind Verstappen, was Leclerc's Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz.

In lap nine, Carlos Sainz went off and crashed, suffering some sort of hydraulics failure. "Something has failed," said Sainz over the radio, as his day ended early in Azerbaijan. Sainz's crash caused a virtual safety car, which allowed Leclerc to pit for hard tires, dropping him to P3, leaving Max Verstappen in P2, who followed his teammate Sergio Perez in P1. However, team Red Bull told Perez to let Verstappen by and he did, giving Verstappen the lead.

By lap 17, Perez hit the pits, which allowed Leclerc to head into P2, behind Verstappen and gaining. Just two laps later, Verstappen headed into the pits, giving Leclerc the lead and some hope to break his several-week streak of bad luck. However, just another two laps after that, tragedy struck Leclerc yet again, as he suffered engine failure, ending his day in Azerbaijan in lap 21. “It hurts, we really want to look into it to see it doesn’t happen again. It’s really disappointing. We didn’t change too much, if anything to make it better. I have no news, I don’t know what’s going to happen.” said Leclerc after his exit.

With team Ferrari entirely out of the race, only team Mercedes posed a real threat to Red Bull, as George Russell in P3 threatened Perez in P2. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton took P4 after passing AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly. However, Mercedes' car troubles continued, as the cars' bouncing issues were causing Hamilton serious back pain, which gave team Red Bull a comfortable lead.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Last season was more an aberration than anything else. F1 is back to one team dominating again...unless Perez pulls a Nico Rosberg and actually beat Verstappen in the end

space_lab's avatar

I’m worried Mercedes’ proposing is going to permanently injure Hamilton, and/or drive him into early retirement. https://streamja.com/pM4Za

DC Trojan's avatar

37 is a good run as a formula one driver, I don’t think anyone (reasonable) could blame him for saying this was enough

Gotta wonder how much further ahead Max would be in the points if he did not have 2 DNFs himself.

Given that this is essentially now a best-of-three series, it seems likely. Of course, if one team catches fire, the Finals could end in 6.

This Finals is an epic back-and-forth struggle.

Watched the film Contact last night. It has aged fairly well. I first saw it on Showtime in 1998. I had just quit my job working on the e-commerce strategy team at a Fortune 50 firm in favor of co-founding a start up web software company. It was unfunded at the time so I was pining in real life to find an S.R. Hadden type figure to back our harebrained idea.

Loved the wormhole to Vega scene and also the bit where Jodie Foster meets her Dad on the shore of a cosmic ocean. Ironically the inspiration to watch the film again was the speech by Matthew McConaughey about the Uvalde tragedy. McConaughey has a significant part in the film. As Carl Sagan's novel turned into film it is worthwhile...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i like this movie a lot. thought provoking and very well done in terms of the drama of building the alien communication device

i like how they say "First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?"

sycasey's avatar

People hated on it because of the ending, but that was one of my favorite things about it.

Having rewatched it recently, I like pretty much everything related to the discovery and investigation of the alien signal. I never buy that McConaughey and Jodie Foster have any romantic chemistry, though.

goldenone's avatar

I didn't notice any real chemistry either

sycasey's avatar

The thing is that you could make this movie without any romantic subplot and it would be fine. The whole thing feels a bit forced.

Rewatched Michael Clayton - really did not appreciate how good Clooney was as a guy just stuck in a terrible situation with a job that he is excellent at but appears to hate.

sycasey's avatar

This is a great, great film.

The Best Actor race was really tough that year: Clooney in this, Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood (he won), also Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises. Any of those could have won the Oscar in a different year.

GoldenSD81's avatar

All three of those movies were very good. Viggo was great in Eastern Promises. The bath house fight scene is underrated.
