Guess which country has the highest Covid mortality per capita?

SGBear's avatar

In case you lost track of how many Americans have died of Covid. It's 1.13m

Apropos: 1.13 million Americans, you waste of space

PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan is taking an indefinite medical leave. His condition was not announced, but I wouldn't rule out having the Saudis up his butt.

FiatSlug's avatar

Monahan is a coward.

That is all.

heyalumnigo's avatar

They wouldn't do it, but what if many of the PGA pro just left the PGA. Of course there isn't an alternative, but that would be a great FU

FiatSlug's avatar

There isn't an alternative. Trying to found a rival league/association would be daunting. But it might be the best thing to do for the future of the game. I see the Saudi's control as staining the PGA, possibly irreparably. Sportswashing is something I thought was largely confined to the Olympics and soccer (FIFA), although there have been reprehensible characters in all of the US's major sports (baseball, football, basketball, and presumably, hockey).

Las Vegas hits the offensive jackpot, scoring 9 goals to win the Stanley Cup. Their offense averaged 6 goals in their four wins over Florida.

It wasn't crazy at least at night.

I don't know yet. My friend picked me up but we ended up not going to the Strip and hanging out at her house. We'll check into Park MGM tonight and find out

SGBear's avatar

Kentucky's Rupp Arena is enormous - 23, 500 seats and they fill it. Syracuse's Carrier dome is a lot bigger, but it's too big because it's also a football stadium.

https://dynamic-media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-o/0b/f5/a8/a3/rupp-arena-kexington.jpg?w=1200&h=-1&s=1

Justbear's avatar

Wow I didn't know that about Syracuse.

FiatSlug's avatar

A different riff on a multi-purpose facility. When I think of multi-purpose facilities, I usually think of baseball/football stadiums (the Coliseum being the last of this variety) or basketball/ice hockey arenas (Oracle Arena was such a facility until the California Golden Seals left and merged with the Cleveland Barons).

The Carrier Dome is just different, but it also portended the advent of NCAA Final Fours being held at NFL stadiums.

Rumors are swirling that Jack Smith has another ace up his sleeve. The Atlantic is reporting that he is still deciding whether to file additional felonies against Trump in New Jersey for another set of documents that he sent to Bedminster. But the Bedminster set includes allegations that he SHOWED the documents to multiple people - which is a more serious charge.

There is a non-zero chance that he wins 2024 election, refuses to invoke the voluntary succession, his new cabinet being just as chicken-shit in not invoking the involuntary clause of the 25th Amendment as his last cabinet, and he literally is President while in jail.

FiatSlug's avatar

Seems that the weapon Judge Cannon could most effectively use to favor the defendant has been taken out of her hands.

This is great news. It also shows why Smith declared in his press conference that he would seek a speedy trial. It puts pressure on Cannon to move things along.

Completely new. And totally out of place since Arlington typically votes 75-80% blue. Maybe a closeted Repub who finally has the nerve to go anti-Trump. I know some of the people in the building but not sure who's in that unit.

ELSEWHERE IN COLLEGE

GoldenSD81's avatar

Not surprisingly, it is a terrible bill that mostly favors colleges at the expense of athletes.

FiatSlug's avatar

What did I say only last week?

GoldenSD81's avatar

I didn’t see your comment last week but I am willing to bet you saw Manchin and Tuberville associated with this and knew it would be a terrible bill for the athletes.

FiatSlug's avatar

I read Tuberville's comments on NIL and said that he clearly favored universities and not athletes. I speculated Tuberville's bill would roll back NIL legislation at the state level.

SGBear's avatar

Good luck with that 2024 schedule, UCLA. That's a lot of miles.

https://twitter.com/CollegeSportsO/status/1667121272310865920

MoriBear's avatar

And it’s almost all away games and then all homes games. Not the usual home-away alternating. Guess giving them all the homes games as the weather gets colder.

FiatSlug's avatar

The non-conference games in Honolulu and Baton Rouge are a nice touch.

EDIT: UCLA's schedule is just more evidence that adding other West Coast schools (Cal, Stanfurd, Oregon, UW) to the B1G will carry its own weight

heyalumnigo's avatar

The schedule is why I think there will be some pressure to add in the 4 teams. Could you imagine the non-revenue sports having this travel for every week or every other week?

I also read the Big 1X and the SEC are looking at UNC and UVa. So basically it isn't just the midwest anymore and not just Penn State and Rutgers.

Berkelium97's avatar

I don't know how the non-revenue sports are going to manage this, especially those that tend to have midweek matches

FiatSlug's avatar

Salient point. Which is another (under the radar) reason why Cal, Stanfurd, Oregon, and UW are odds on favorites to be invited to join the B1G. It will cut down on the travel outside of the West Coast.

FiatSlug's avatar

We're getting to the point where there will be three big power conferences with large memberships. The MWC tried it but it fell apart. I think the B1G, SEC, an Big XII will make it succeed because the money will paper over a lot of problems. But it's still tricky because geography (read: travel) will play a role.

GoldenSD81's avatar

That Ohio State game will be a “home” game in name only. I imagine Ohio State fans will take over the Rose Bowl the way they did Memorial when we played them.

This schedule will kill the ucla fan base and attendance even more than it already is.

SGBear's avatar

From your mouth to Oski's ear

Oski Disciple's avatar

FiatSlug's avatar

Right. Trips to -

Hawaii (Honolulu, HI) - 2556 miles

LSU (Baton Rouge, LA) - 1609 miles

Indiana (Bloomington, IN) - 1,814 miles (to Indianapolis Int'l Airport)

Iowa (Iowa City, IA) - 1,538 miles

Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) - 1,944 miles

Rutgers (Piscataway, NJ) - 2,448 miles (to Newark Liberty Airport)

Those trips average approx. 1,985 air miles, each direction. That's a lot of time in the air.
