Be sure to join us Saturday and Sunday for the weekend DBD hosted by Psychotic Oski and Kathmandu Bear. It’ll be our Summer Preview with a guide to the latest swimwear, suggested beach reads and recommendations on the best sunscreens. Also Lee Harvey will be telling us more about his recent vacation in Nebraska and we’ll look at ahead to next month’s arts and crafts fair. Finally, while I have your attention, if you’re interested in helping plan the Summer Jamboree there’s a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the main lobby.

I went to the opening of a new exhibit at the Library of Congress last night. For me, the highlights were the contents of Lincoln’s clothes the night he was assassinated and a filled in scorebook from a game in the 1880s. Natalie Merchant did a free folk concert in connection with the opening.

No, as in Doctor No. Classic Bond flick. Ursula Andress was Honey Ryder.

Ursula. As in the Latin name for female bear. Also, Ursula was the first name of Ursula K. Le Guin, who was born in Berkeley and whose parents owned a home on Arch Street, within a couple hundred yards of Casa de Slug.

i dont mind fast food. i can eat it every so often and enjoy it.

places like Bob Evans (not quite fast food) and Arby's and Hardee's are near the bottom of the list. i think i have only been to Arby's once and never to Hardee's.

I rarely go, but once in a while I go, especially when I am traveling through the Midwest.

I'm sure there are many fast food restaurants I've never been to.

I have never been to Red Lobster. Discount lobster and seafood sounds disgusting and I have absolutely zero desire to ever go. I don't care how good you say their Cheddar Bay Biscuits are - great biscuits are not rare where I live.

In Iowa, you can get married at age 15. 21 states have a 16 year old limit. 10 have a 17 year limit. 11 have an 18 year limit. Guess which four states have NO age limit to get married? Remember, marriage is a legal act - but other legal acts like divorce, go to a domestic abuse shelter, or even use be prohibited services because contracts with minors are not enforceable.

Expand full comment

The four states with no minimum age for marriage are all red states. One of them isn't surprising, at all (Alabama). The other three states are in what I would call the Upper Midwest: Nebraska, Iowa, and North Dakota. I am somewhat surprised by this because I thought those states have historically had "responsible" GOP leadership.

Expand full comment
author

I don't think that's true. All four of those states have either 16 or 17. Of the four states that have no minimum age, two require a court order, one either is by court order or the bride has to be pregnant, and one repugnant holdout state allows any child to get married any age with both parent's official consent filed at the courts

From the Wikipedia page -

"As of April 2024, four US states do not set any minimum age for marriage.[6]"

Go to footnote [6] on that same Wikipedia page and click on the link.

Hover your cursor over the Forced/Child Marriage drop down menu, the drift down to Child Marriage in the U.S.

Scroll down that page to the map. You'll see 4 states in red, which designates they have taken no action: Alabama, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota.

I did. There are four states that do not set any minimum age for marriage:

New Mexico, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and California. The color coding of red means "no action", as in there are no current bills recently introduced to increase the age of marriage, but those states do have minimum ages (16 and 17).

Expand full comment

I missed that. A pox on me for failing to investigate further.

It's crazy that California is one of the four states. What's worse is that the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and the Children's Law Center (who you might suppose would be opposed to child marriage) did, in fact., oppose a bill by Jerry Hill in 2017 that would have abolished child marriage in California and established the minimum age as 18 years old.

ESPN's front page article is about the US Open. It has the headline that includes "What does Tiger need to do?". I am surprised how much of a media thing he still garner since he is clearly washed up due to permanent injury issues. He has only played in 3 PGA events this year and finished only once, finishing 214th out of 230 players. 61 year old Vijay Singh is doing better than him.

Tried to go to a KBO game, but it was sold out. Looks like the only way to buy tickets online is to have a Korean phone number. So I tried walkup and so did many other people. There were old people scalping tickets, but I didn't bother trying since I didn't want to get scammed and I can't read the ticket anyways.

I'd be very interested to know if your hotel would buy tickets for you. Would certain types of hotels/accommodations be more receptive to such a request than others?

BTW, I recently came across this article:

When I realized they were sold out my first thought was that I should've asked their version of the concierge to check. If I had gotten there maybe 20-30 min earlier I probably couldve gotten tickets. They were putting up the sold out signs when I just got in line.

Dodgers’ comeback attempt fails again as Rangers take the series

The Dodgers hosted the Texas Rangers on Thursday for the finale of their three game series, where the Rangers mounted a lead early, winning by a final score of 3-1.

Michael Grove was given the task as the opener for the Dodgers as a part of a bullpen game. Grove’s numbers are far inferior compared to his stats as a reliever, and it showed with Grove allowing two runs to score in the top of the first inning.
