your Father's Day activities

Started in Guerneville, where we had been since Friday with the boys and their significant others. We "checked out" of a vacation home a few minutes before 10:00 AM.

Mrs Slug and I then drove through Sebastopol to the family cabin where rebuilding will start on the new septic system this week. Then we drove home to Berkeley by way of Glen Ellen.

Dinner was grilled tritip, asparagus, and potatoes. Dessert was cheesecake.

Just a really good dinner (it was Sunday) - Chicken Enchiladas, with a good, tasty avocado salad - paired with an American Syrah 2015, good match. But the most Father's Day thing was my daughter making my favorite desert - the Japanese Cotton cheese Cake - so much lighter and more perfect than the American version.

Spent the day up at the cabin. Jones got some dog park time. Watched baseball. Discussed with Newellbany what went wrong because his oldest daughter, who has lived her entire life on the East Coast, prefers Twizzlers over Red Vines, which is patently absurd.

Went to The World Famous San Diego Zoo with the family, took the kids for ice cream, then went to a local park. Had lasagna for dinner, watched Creed 3 with a few whiskey and Coke night caps.

drove up to New Paltz NY about 90 min from home and did a very manageable 6 mile hike w/ the family that everyone was good sports about.

then a nice dinner at an Irish pub before heading home.

New Paltz is famous for rock climbing at the Gunks. lots of people were out climbing and i am sure my kids would rather have been doing that.

Marak of Cauliflower with Tomatoes and Olives - a house favorite ...

https://spadesspatulasandspoons.com/2015/03/22/march-in-the-kitchen-marak-of-cauliflower-with-tomatoes-and-olives/

A Marak is a Moroccan vegetable stew. In her introduction to the dish Ms. Wolfert says “Moroccans often steam or pan-roast vegetables in order to preserve their sweet intense flavor and to endow them with a creamy texture. Here juicy bits of preserved lemon and ripe olives embellish pan-roasted cauliflower.” Being a big fan of cauliflower, and having a head in the fridge, I decided to try it. My usual method of cooking cauliflower is tossing with spices and roasting in a hot oven, so this dish was a departure from habit.

Roasting + acid tamps down the sulfur taste and brings forward the nuttiness of its flavor. Very low in calories + a fairly neutral flavor = healthy, which means I make it all the time as a base for some type of sauce, topping, or spice. One of my favorites now is blended almonds, garlic, semi-dried tomatoes, Parmesan, and pink peppercorns.

Surprisingly good, but perhaps I am biased because the subject is about parent on the horizon of being empty nesters. Romano surprised me with his good acting.

Not surprising. If he returns, probably will be a multi year contract at or below market value. Don't see a team taking him for what his option was. I assume Warriors would be given an option to match or come close.

What teams could use his D and playmaking ability without his O. Maybe someone like the Suns that have 3 scorers. I could see the Kings going for it. They need a Defensive presence and a big playmaker that just isn't PnR.

There's an island in the Potomac near the Kennedy Center that I like to walk to and sit out and read. I went by yesterday afternoon and the gates to the bridge to the island was locked. After awhile a bunch of park police and park service vehicles came over the bridge. It turns out Roosevelt Island is bear (black, not golden) territory. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the bear yesterday so they set a trap and the island is closed for the time being. They plan to catch it, tranquilize it, and move it out to the boonies.
