The Athletics dropped their series-opening contest to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday afternoon, falling 11-4 after a little rain delay threw everyone off. The Tigers build on their league-best record while the A’s continue to occupy the worst=team-not-named-White-Sox spot in the American League. They just haven’t been able to get back to where they were after the end of April and things won’t be getting any easier for them on this three-city road trip.
Went to the Sacramento RiverCats vs the OKC Comets (Dodgers affiliate) last night. Comets won 13-2. Dodgers had 4-5 players that have had some time in the MLB, with Outman having the most. Giants also had a few that have had a cup of coffee, with Tyler Fitzgerald having the most. I can see why the Giants lack depth in the minors.
The weather was surprisingly good, low 70s at 6:30.
Part of me wants to berate the San Francisco Giants for losing to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, which they did, by a score of 4-2. Part of my wants to say that the Marlins (a bad baseball team) are the type of squad the Giants (a good baseball team) should be sweeping, especially when at home.
Michael Conforto had his best game yet with the Dodgers, fueling another big inning against Germán Márquez. In a sense of déjà vu, Los Angeles held off another Rockies comeback to win 9-7 on Tuesday night at Coors Field in Denver.
Every year in the old Pac-10 days with the Cal Band when we would visit the LA schools. The Friday night before the game was a major fundraising day for us with a full-band performance at a benefit.
Plus, my freshman year in 1990, we did a full-band roadie to UW. We took Greyhound busses. In those days, we were at the tail-end of the tradition of decorating busses with duct tape. On one bus, someone attached a duct-tape, um, appendage to the Greyhound dog. I can still remember the driver of that bus saying "Get the dick off the dog." Good times.
A more frequently taken trip was about 2.5 hours from Santa Cruz to Oakland via Greyhound. As I recall, there were stops in Scotts Valley, Los Gatos, San Jose, Milpitas, and Hayward (not sure; might have been San Leandro) before getting to Oakland.
Not more than about 3.5 hours. Rode a bus from Louisville to the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, OH with No 2's class. Didn't like it. I tried to sleep most of the way.
I'd probably hate a trip that took all day or multiple days.
Because I’m old bus trips were more of a thing. Late summer after I graduated I flew to DC and then had a 30 day bus pass to get back to the Bay Area. Stopped at a number of places along the way to visit relatives.
The longest bus ride I have taken was a Greyhound from Rutland, VT to the PATH station in Lower Manhattan. From there, I took a local train to the NJ Transit terminal in Newark. Then took a different train from Newark to Gladstone/Peapack station which was near our home in New Jersey. I think my step-father picked me up from the station. I had left a two-week backpacking trip with 5 days left because my feet were so blistered, I chose to pack it in. I don't remember how long of a trip it was, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 6 hours or more. This was in 1977.

How RUDE!... to write this article. Poor guy can't even play it down when the event is being blasted over the internet.
Reminded me of jock checks in high school PE class. Looking back on it, I guess the gym teachers didn't want to scandalize the high school. And in the 1970s anything to do with the human body and teenagers was liable to be scandalous.
It’s time for another edition of Oski Disciple’s quote of the day.
