Gonna get up to 91 in my part of Oakland. These are the times I'm glad I invested in air conditioning a few years ago.

very pleasant up here in Pacific NW, Seattle. mostly 70s during day, a bit cooler at night.

mostly not raining anymore, partly cloudy or sunny.

hoping to good weather for the 4th and on the 7th when we climb up to the Muir Base Camp on Mount Rainier.

Predicted to be over 100 Sat & Sun in western Oregon. Which will be brutal for any number of activities. Quite a shock from 70s today.

Mrs Slug's mom lives in Citrus Heights (Sacramento County). Projected highs are (checks app) 108 deg. F today. The projected highs for the next 9 days are as follows -

July 3 - 111 deg. F

July 4 - 110 deg. F

July 5 - 111 deg. F

July 6 - 110 deg. F

July 7 - 108 deg. F

July 8 - 108 deg. F

July 9 - 107 deg. F

July 10 - 105 deg. F

July 11 - 104 deg. F

Starting to cool off just a touch next week. Mrs Slug claims that when temps have reached 110 (or more), you become sensitive to small changes of a degree. There is some worry about weather affected power outages even though this is SMUD territory, not PG&E.

Mrs Slug's sister and BIL have a generator and a spare room. If the power is expected to go out at Mom's place, she will be transported to sister & BIL's place to ride out the heat wave.

Meanwhile, the projected highs in Berkeley in the same time frame are no higher than 86 deg. F, and mostly in the low 80s and upper 70s. We do not talk about the weather with our inland relations as it feels like gloating.

Hurricane Beryl roared into existence and became the first Hurricane 4 in June on record. It has since intensified into a 5. It is bearing down on Jamaica, but its windward arms are creating havoc in the Caribbean. It is expected to lose strength, but it is something of concern.

ESPN: Klay Thompson to join Mavs on a 3-year 50m contract. This pretty much ensures that he'll light up the Warriors and then go ice cold the next game.

Love Klay, but would have made no sense for Dubs to keep him. He’s a nice three point threat, but is streaky and is no longer a good defender, plus obviously on the down swing.

Totally pathetic tournament. Not so much this result (though it wasn't good), but losing to Panama on home soil should never happen, and that is the main reason they are out.

They are busy wasting the best collection of talent the USMNT has ever seen.

I don't know how they can keep him after this result. There's no excuse for getting knocked out of a group stage with Bolivia and Panama in it, especially as the host nation.

And while I don't claim to be any kind of soccer expert, my experience with Berhalter's team is that they don't ever seem to play with great cohesion on offense. They rarely link up 2 or 3 passes in a row to create a great scoring chance. It's just down to possessing the ball as much as possible and hoping something happens. When you go against a team like Uruguay who can do that better than you, it gets ugly.

Given the individual talent they now seem to have, they should not be this punchless.

Expand full comment

one can only hope. When I'm listening to Alexi Lalas - who was so annoyed he dropped his usual shtick - calmly taking apart the team and coaching and agreeing with pretty much every point, you know things are going badly for the team.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

I expected to see more commentary pointing out that Biden could now just throw Trump in jail and be immune because this would be an official act. Of course he wouldn't do this, but it seems like a fascinating discussion point.

Epstein grand jury document unsealed by Florida judge. The records have disturbing information about how Epstein would pay for others to recruit minors to prostitute themselves under the guise of "massage". One of Epstein's recruiters was modeling agency boss Jean-Luc Brunnel, who hung himself in his cell as he was charged for rape and was under investigation for pimping minors. The released documents show records of girls from Brunnel's agency leaving messages with Epstein's office re-confirming their massage appointments with Trump.
