OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Expand full comment

I thought maybe the Biden team had put a stop to the defections, but between this and Pelosi's comments ("He needs to make a decision") it seems like the drumbeat will go on. Interesting times!

Expand full comment

In other words, it ain't over until it's over.

Let's hope it's over soon. Like maybe Sunday at the latest. I'm not sure I want it bleeding over into the GOP convention and allowing the GOP to flog the Dems as in disarray.

Expand full comment

I don't think pulling a Dem candidate for another at midnight will result in any less flogging. This is a shitshow any way you slice it.

Expand full comment

Not sure about that. Other Democrats in swing states are consistently out-performing Joe Biden in polling. The big drag on Joe Biden is perception of his age and continued fitness for office. A younger candidate can take that away.

Of course the right wing will attack whoever it is, but this is about persuadable voters in the middle. They've been pretty dead-set on the "Joe Biden is too old" idea for a while now.

Expand full comment

I'm not disagreeing with the strategy. But let's be fair: the party is a misaligned shitshow right now. There will be flogging no matter what decisions are made between now and Sunday.

All GOP politics have devolved to tough guy messaging to pander to the base, as opposed to actually legislating. The unstated implication seems to be that Dems are satanic or something? Lol

CAL

4 Football games vs UCLA scheduled starting in 2026.

Expand full comment

I know these games will be good for a turnout and potentially for recruiting and donor outreach in LA, but I'd prefer us make this breakup as uncomfortable for them as possible, which could maybe help in getting a B1G invite down the road if the west coast B1G schools find their new arrangement too difficult without more west coast representation. Also, we need to start scheduling in more non-conference patsies to get on the better side of a win-loss record if we ever expect to survive long-term.

Expand full comment

This means we will miss Ethan Garbers and perhaps play against former Cal commit Justyn Martin

Expand full comment

Seems like Martin is destined for a career riding the bench in Pasadena. I was crushed when we lost his commitment. Thought he might be a star.

On a probably related note, the Cal/Florida home-and-home series was cancelled. I was not looking forward to going to Gainesville anyways.

Expand full comment

Oh no. I thought the date may have changed but not cancelled. Playing Florida would have been cool.

I guess it's less appealing now that we are playing powerhouses in the East Coast on a regular basis, but I still would have loved an SEC game.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I suspect this is because we will already get regular games against Florida teams in the ACC now. May as well use the non-conference slots on west-coast games.

Expand full comment

Looks like other series were cancelled too. Georgia and UCLA (2025-26), Ole Miss and USC (2025-26) and Auburn and UCLA (2027-28).

No more Pac12 vs SEC

Expand full comment

I'm guessing several of the ex-Pac schools are looking to have a friendlier travel schedule for non-conference play.

Expand full comment

i appreciate that Gainesville sucks as a town. college football would have been good to see there though, i think.

plus, 2 of my sister-in-laws went to UF. would have been a semi-fun family rivalry game.

Expand full comment

The second most Confederate flags I've seen flying (behind western part of Virginia) is northern Florida near Gainesville.

Expand full comment

Is it weird that I'm not enthusiastic about this?

Expand full comment

Not at all. The attraction the UCLA series for me was not just that Cal is an in-state rival with UCLA and that LA is evil, but that we were conference rivals and if we finished ahead of the Bruins ion the standings it made it even better to beat their sorry asses.

In other words, the raison d'etre for the series was seriously wounded by UCLA moving to a different conference.

That is all.

seems like the largest chunk of the $180k+ setup was a very fancy watch

Though exact models vary in price, the RM 011 series watches frequently fetch between $150,000 and $180,000 (around £117,000 - £141,000) making Cav's outfit one of the most illustrious in the peloton

there is a rule that all the bikes that the pros use must be available to the general public, ie no custom made parts or anything.

he actual bike setup is a modest $15k. i used to ride a Willer Triestina bike as well. it was great. a lesser known brand in the US, very classically Italian.

As far as cost is concerned, standard range-topping versions of the Filante SLR retail for €11,300 (around $12,191 / £10,316), but if you want the bike in the special edition Cavendish colours, you will have to cough up €13,300 ($14,350 or £11,255).
