The hippopotamus is a very aggressive wild creature and is the deadliest large land mammal on the planet. It is estimated that hippo attacks kill 500 people each year in Africa. It is not only their size and weight that make them dangerous, but also their very sharp teeth!
Eastern Bloc Spirits. As a reminder, I'm staying in Brighton Beach - an area in Brooklyn where the vast majority of the people are ex-Soviet immigrants. Unsurprisingly, there a lot of liquor stores here. There are the standard liquor stores, where you can go grab a few bottles of breakfast vodka. But I found a liquor store that specializes in gift bottles. Russians know good vodka, so these are liquors that are NOT vodka, but other spirits and meant to be more symbolic than actually drunk. So you send a gift basket of a really expensive vodka and perhaps a stunt-bottle. The bottles are crazy shapes. There is a giant tequila bottled shaped like an mortar shell. Another like a warship. A red French bulldog with gold plated collar/ears/tail. Another shaped like a 2' long jaguar (filled with tequila). And my personal favorite is Armenia Menorah Brandy, which is exactly as advertised.
The A2 variant of the M777 howitzer has been seen for the first time in the wild in Ukraine. Its digital module allows it to accurately fire the 1,000 Excalibur shells that the US pledged to Ukraine in the last aid package. Excalibur is accurate within 10 feet after shooting 40 miles out. Some Russians are having or about to have a very bad day.
If the San Jose Sharks want to make an impact in free agency, they’re going to need cap space and general manager Mike Grier has cleared out a significant amount this morning, sending veteran defender Brent Burns and forward Lane Pederson to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz, goaltender Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional 2023 third-round pick.
Burns, 37, has three years remaining on his $8 million per year contract. Per The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Sharks will retain 33 percent of Burns’ salary. His contract also includes a modified no-trade clause, which allows him a list of three teams he would accept a trade every July 1, meaning he approved this move to Carolina, and would have to approve further movement. The Dallas Stars are another team who was reportedly in the mix for the defender.
Originally drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft, the Sharks acquired Burns in a draft-day trade in 2011, packaged with a second-round pick in exchange for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and a first-round pick. In the 11 seasons since, Burns has played 798 games with the Sharks, totaling 594 points (172 goals, 422 assists). However, having previously played over .80 points per game at his peak, he’s been between .52 and .66 points per game over the last three seasons.
I agree with Will Clark. If you can't make adjustments to hit a baseball to where they're not, then you're - as the Thrill put it - an "idiot". Clark said this about Brandon Belt:
"I've had this talk to Brandon Belt until I'm blue in the face. I'm like, 'why don't you back off the plate, get the ball out over the plate for you instead of being in on you all the time, why don't you back off the plate, get the ball out over the plate and go the other way?' But he always stands in the same spot in the batter's box and pulls everything and hits it right into the shift."
Not going far enough if you ask me. Every player should have their position marked on the ground with tape so they know exactly where to stand. Singing lessons wouldn't hurt either.
This encapsulates my bitterness with banning shifts - it doesn't encourage hitters to become better hitters. Shifts should be seen as one of two things - (1) an opportunity to put a hurt on the defensive team by hitting it where they ain't or (2) an outright dis of the batter (much like coming to the plate after an IBB).
My displeasure is even greater in that, at the major league level, hitters should be able to defeat the shift with batting skills learned in the minors. If not, why not?
Come from behind wins have been the storyline for the Dodgers during this recent winning streak, and if the men in blue were to keep the streak alive, they would another five-run comeback to take over this one.
In the end, the Dodgers did just enough to take it down to the wire, but could never quite get there to take the lead, or even tie up the game, after the Cards jumped on Mitch White for six runs over five innings.
White flashed some good signs early on, retiring the first five hitters he faced, but when Albert Pujols came up to the bat with the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the future first ballot hall of fame showed a glimpse of what would be the biggest problem for White in a night that ultimately ended up being the worst one of his career, allowing six earned runs.
Those protestors at Silverstone are so lucky the race was red flagged moments before they got on the track. 180mph cars designed to slice through the air + soft, squishy humans = unpleasant outcomes
There is a video out there somewhere on the Internet of someone getting hit by an F1 car. That person came apart and it traumatized me a bit. When I initially saw the news of these people sitting on the track, I reflexively x'd out the site as I had no interest in watching a group of people get bisected.
Giants smash the Diamondbacks 13-0 and it was essentially over in the first inning.
Has anyone faded from great to horrible as fast as Dallas Keuchel? Cy Young winner in 2015. Signs a three-year $55m contract with White Sox and gives them a good season in 2020, coming in fifth in Cy Young voting. Then the wheels come off in 2021 as his ERA and WHIP rise by more than half. In 2022, he is so putrid that the White Sox eat his contract and DFA him. Arizona - which had terrible pitching anyways -suffers injuries in the back of the rotation and pick him up for the league minimum and he continues to be absolutely awful. He is - or was - a four pitch guy who painted the edges with some nasty big break stuff. But watching last night, he's lost his late break, so now guys are sitting on his slider that they know he'll try to backdoor into the zone and the Giants just barrel his pitches. I suspect that this was his last appearance in the majors.

The first gave birth to a boy. The chief was so elated he built her a teepee made of deer hide.
A few days later, the second gave birth, also to a boy. The chief was very happy. He built her a teepee made of antelope hide.
The third wife gave birth a few days later, but the chief kept the details a secret. He built this one a two-story teepee, made out of a hippopotamus hide.
He challenged the tribe to guess what had occurred.
Many tried, unsuccessfully.
Finally, one young brave declared that the third wife had given birth to twin boys.
"Correct," said the chief. "How did you figure it out?"
The warrior answered, "Easy. The value of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides."

Does Meadows have any interest in being Scooter Libby for Trump? And why would Trump's lawyers be saying this? Just signaling their intent to make him the fall guy?
Of course, irony abounds with Dick Cheney's daughter as the 1/6 committee vice-chair (not a criticism, she's been admirable in the role) and Trump having pardoned Scooter but hanging Meadows out to dry.
