Welcome to the DBD, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like…
name some classical music that has become synonymous with an activity (eg, Wagner’s Treulich Geführt from the Lohengrin opera is THE song for a bride’s entrance and a part of Mendelssohn’s Incidental Music (Op 61) in E Major for use during Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream is THE recessional song).
Both Wagner and Mendelssohn’s songs usage for weddings was popularized when they were used in the wedding of Princess Victoria (the first child of UK Queen Victoria). She was the heir to the British throne for slightly less than a year until her younger brother, Albert, was born. Albert ascended the throne and became King Edward VII. Victoria got to meet Prussia’s Prince Frederick’s via two state visits the first when she was 11 and he was 19 and the second when she was 15. He asked for her hand in marriage 3 days after his second visit. Frederick became the crown prince after his grandfather the king died three years after his marriage to Victoria. However, he had to wait another 26 years for his father to die, smoking lots of cigarettes while he waited. He got a cough in late 1997, just before his father’s death and his own ascension to the German throne as Frederick III. Three days later, Frederick III was confirmed to have throat cancer. Vicky got to be German Empress for 99 days until Frederick III died. Her son Wilhelm II and his love/hate relationship with the British caused him to rule Germany as a rival to his grandmother Queen Victoria, which included supporting the marriage of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Thus, it was Kaiser Wilhelm II’s mother who popularized bridal music and helped start WW1.
