I'm in my fifth day of eating Russian and ex-Soviet foods. Admittedly, I've got a small sample size, but my observation is that Russian food is derivative and reductive. There is a certain core of real Russian food - rye bread, buckwheat kasha, and various types of soup like borscht. But almost all other dishes are derivative of their neighboring cultures - Turkish, Persian, Arab, Chinese, German, Polish, Indian and whatnot. So the Russians have their own version of something - a Shanghai soup dumpling, Polish galumpky, Persian shishkebab, German coleslaw, et cetera... but their version uses fewer ingredients, few spices, tries to stretch it out with fillers, and make it calorie dense.
It's peasant food and even when they try to elevate it, it's white trash food. In the words of my kid, "they have everything that everyone else has, but their version kinda sucks". And it's not like I'm going to bad places. I'm going to places that are neighborhood favorites, packed with people.
I'm hopeful that when I step out for some more regional food (eg, Uyghur, Tajik, Uzbek) that it'll get a little bit tastier. But so far, it's all "okay, but whatever".
When we were in Moscow, the best food tended to be from former Soviet republic restaurants - so like the Georgian, Ukrainian and Lithuanian restaurants were the best. But it might also have been if people in Moscow want to spend money to go out to eat (and Moscow is $$$$$) they don't want a version of what they make at home either.
That was my observation as well after visiting the local Russian market. Few unique surprises, lots of things that looked like other things but less exciting.
I have a book idea rattling around in my head that was sparked by watching the 1997 Val Kilmer movie "The Saint". At the end of that movie, the good guys give away the formula for cold fusion and the screen fades to credits as everyone envisions an environmental utopia. My book idea opens on the day after those credits roll and has to do with the unintended consequences of universally making energy nearly free - including ironically making pollution worse as it would make extraction and production substantially easier/cheaper to do. And I would include sub-plots of how Russia, the Middle East, and other petrodollar economies collapsed into unthinkable poverty, resulting in regional wars. There would be a redemption arc as there'd be massive benefits (eg, global reforestation as desalinating water becomes feasible), but the point was that it wouldn't be a straight line and governments would have to intervene to offset the invisible costs to common goods.
thin film is a giant plot point of the first book of the Three Body Problem trilogy - there's some really fascinating science stuff in the three books.
I keep reading the casting announcements and I keep worrying that a series that (ESPECIALLY THE FIRST BOOK) hinges so much on Chinese history and Chinese characters has relatively few Chinese people casted.
Also the science stuff is going to be a big hurdle for a lot of people. I hope they don't dumb it down too much - but on the other hand if it's too too hard sci-fi will anyone watch?
How do you convey on film the esoteric nature of the TriSolarans and sophon technology? And how to convey how much of it happens figuratively and literally in people's head. It's a challenge, I hope they don't dumb it down.
Isn't it "easier" to just emit a lot of dusts and other harmless particles in the air to mimic a large volcano eruption? (Yes, there will be some bad side effects as well).

I watched season 6 and 7 and started season 8 of Game of Thrones. I knew Season 8 was coming, but JFC did the writing get horrible. It's remarkable what happens when the writing is bad. All the previously good things - acting, music, world-creation, previous plot line, and themes - just suddenly seem dumb. There are no surprises any more, so I don't feel bad about pushing the fast-forward 15 second button occasionally. There's a lot of soliloquies of "isn't this ironic that this is happening" and me thinking "no, this isn't ironic because it isn't a surprise".
It was so, so bad. IMO things even started going down hill in the 2nd half of S4, but held on to be pretty good through S5. 6,7,8….we don’t talk about those

Sacto-area native and Oregon Duck TE Spencer Webb has passed away in a tragic accident. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and community supporters.
Watch this play again, this time focusing on the individual efforts, starting on the strong side (top of screen). This is a designed counter sweep - a zone-run outside to the weakside (bottom of scren). The WR on top does a fake, but doesn't block anyone. The TE (80) does a chop block, which succeeds but he gets up lazily, using his knee to get up, looks to block someone downfield and then whiffs on his block, runs upfield for someone else to block and goes after the wrong guy who is already behind Jahvid. The RT blocks his man's outside shoulder, but its a bad block and only last a second before falling down, gets up and then looks for and fails to block two different opponents with anything more than a hand slap. The RG has no man on him, he jogs downfield and goes after three different players - failing to make contact on anybody. The center pulls right and makes contact with his, briefly holds him as Best cuts back, but then makes no other contact until he illegally blocks a guy in the back. The right tackle makes a good block but doesn't sustain it and his guy gets free even when Jahvid is still behind the line of scrimmage. The lone person on the o-line who made a good block was the LG, who buried his man, gets up and buries someone else. The FB makes a block but only sustains it for one second. The far WR doesn't block his man, but does run interference as the CB tries to get an angle on Best, but doesn't end up blocking him. Riley ends up making the block. So literally it was literally only the LG and Riley who won their blocks. Everyone else either lost their blocks or didn't block anyone. All other misses were because Jahvid had UCLA tripping over each other to get him.

Oakland was defeated by the Texas Rangers in the series finale on Wednesday evening, managing just four hits in the 5-2 loss.
Texas pounced on Oakland’s starter for all their runs in the first, but he settled in after that, only walking a single hitter the rest of the way. The damage stood up against an impotent A’s lineup that struck out 12 times and only got a pair of solo home runs in the ninth to prevent a shutout.
For quite a while it looked like the San Francisco Giants were coasting towards the most frustrating and predictable of losses. A day after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-0, the Giants were making you utter the age-old line, “They couldn’t have saved some of those runs for today?”
It’s pretty predictable. The last five times the Giants have scored at least 12 runs and won in a blowout they’ve turned around the next day and scored 3, 4, 4, 4, and 2 runs. That’s not an anti-Giants fact, it’s just a baseball fact. Score like it’s the home run derby one day, and you’re all but guaranteed to leave your fans clamoring for a rollover plan the next day.
Through six innings on Wednesday the Giants had taken it to an extreme. They had just one hit — a second-inning leadoff double by Thairo Estrada that amounted to nothing. They’d grounded into two double plays. They’d sent only three batters to the plate in four consecutive innings. They’d even leaned on their home turf to help increase their frustration, as evidenced by Joc Pederson getting Oracle’d for the umpteenth time this season — his third-inning flyout was hit 104.9 mph and traveled 404 feet, only to land in a glove of all the silly places.
It's a baseball fact that you tend to score a lot less against the #1 pitcher than the emergency #5 pitcher who doesn't even belong in the majors anymore
After coming back from down 5-0 against the Cubs last week, the Dodgers outdid themselves on Wednesday night, erasing a late inning six run-deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6.
The Dodgers and Cardinals traded zeroes for the first two innings, then Paul Goldschmidt singled to right field with two outs in the third to deliver the game’s first two runs. The bleeding didn’t stop there, as Nolan Arenado sent a 1-2 pitch from Gonsolin into the left field seats, giving St. Louis a 4-0 lead.
St. Louis added a run in the fourth on an Andrew Knitzer two out double and a run in the 6th off of Alex Vesia. Five of the Cardinals’ six runs were scored with two outs.
I think a lot of athletes only got vaccinated due to peer pressure from teammates. Conversely, it's kind of easy to see how a significant part of a team may all follow someone's bad advice.
Kind of an interesting thing is that the Yankees may not pursue Benintendi anymore because they have 6 more games in Toronto.

Who holds the record for the longest run against UCLA?
The record belongs to Jahvid Best (in my heart, if nothing else):

This was almost 100% Jahvid.

Underrated part of that shot: the Asian girl to his lower right who seems about to scream: "What the fuck?!"
Nick's article is, IMHO, the finest piece of journalistic tea-bagging that I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
I might give more credit to the FB: he does basically clear his man out of the area where Best was originally supposed to go.
Otherwise, yeah, UCLA's defense mostly won this play up front and it's only because of spectacular running that it became a big play for Cal.
Loved the block by Riley.
This may not be the correct answer, but it is the right answer.
Both. It is also the correct answer.

Cal Tech

Dodgers’ latest comeback is their best one yet

Down 6-0, Dodgers score 2 in the 7th, 4 in the 8th, and 2 in the 9th to eek out a comeback win.
Learned a new baseball acronym. Dodgers had the bases loaded two nights ago no outs and didn't score.
NOBLETIGER. No Outs Bases Loaded, Ending with Team Incapable of Getting Easy Run
Almost as good as TOOTBLAN. Thrown Out On The Basepaths Like A Nincompoop. I think named after Ryan Theriot.

The O's and M's are both on 10-game win streaks. Whoever bet that would happen would be a very rich person.
WTF. Half of the KC Royals starting lineup is not vaccinated.

I still get surprised when people who need their bodies in top shape don’t do simple things to keep in top shape
I like how the solution suggested in the article is for Canada to repeal its “outdated” (lol) travel policy.
Gee, I wonder if there is any other possible solution here??? Like, uh, stepping into a fucking Walgreens and rolling up your sleeve for 30 secs? JFC
Yeah this was nuts. Maybe they all hang out with Aaron Rodgers
CAL
Four-star DB Rodrick Pleasant cuts his list down to six, including Cal. In the hunt are Cal, UCLA, USC, Oregon, BC, and Penn State. A track star, he set the California record in the 100 meters at 10.14.
One of these teams is not like the other...
BC doesn't have a vowel
@Cal won't play for a P5 conference, if at all in 3 years@
Go Bears!!!
