Since I'm first here today I'd like to welcome everybody, especially the newcomers. Remember the rules: no flash photography, don't wear or display any red and no outside food or drinks. Oh by the way, we've got the Axe!

Chess. Only expert ranked, but got into the non-playing side of it while with SUPERB and after college. At one point I thought about making a living at it (mainly teaching and administrative), had a job offer from Mechanics' Library to run their Chess room a few years after graduating, but stuck with my Help Desk position and have had a solid career in IT.

Expand full comment

i wish i had spent more time learning to play chess better earlier in life. i am solidly mediocre enough to play w/ kids and be a few steps ahead of them. but that's about it.

explaining complex things in a non-complex but understandable way to people at various levels of expertise and education.

2x distinguished faculty teaching award at Cal's data science program but i take more pride in just explaining basic science-y or math-y things to non-science and non-math people.

i still think that i would have been better off in life being a HS physics or math teacher.

author

It's kinda fun and cool too, right? when you see that lightbulb turn on for someone after you explain something to them.

Expand full comment

indeed. especially in areas like physics and math where there is a lot of baggage associated with "not being a math person" and people having had lots of bad experiences.

i find that the trick is not to have a set explanation in mind. rather adapt it to the individual(s) you are trying to connect with.

My kids say my pizza. Though I feel like I'm trying to get it more airy. It's Neapolitan style but I can't seem to get it quite as light as the restaurants. The Ooni and the Caputo Type 00 flour does wonders though.

This is my go-to dough recipe, from Roberta's in Brooklyn.

Interesting. the one I found that claims it's Roberta's is 1/2 1/2 Type 00 and all purpose? I may have to try it out.

Don't have NYT but I'll see if I can find it elsewhere.

I basically do about 125 g per pizza with 65% water. So 4 crusts is 500 g of flour with 325g of water. about 1/4 - 1/2 tsp of yeast and 1/2 - 3/4 tsp of salt per pizza.

Put it in the kitchen aid and mix for about 10-15 min until the dough springs back.

It's basically this one.

i can attest to the fact the HAG's pizza is quite excellent. if you ask nicely, i think HAG is happy to show up w/ his portable pizza oven, some pre-made dough and toppings of your choice!

That's the great thing about the Ooni. Brought it up to our friend's cabin at Northstar a couple of winters go and HSB and our friends had a variety of pizzas.

also HAG is teaching Mrs HSB the secrets of making the perfect pizza dough. i am just the person who takes pizza in/out of the Ooni.

If you name a year between 1915 and now I can tell you who Cal's football coach was, whether the Bears had a winning record and who won the Big Game, in many cases I can give you the Bears' exact record. From 1960 on I can also tell you who the starting QB was.

I don't know, maybe that's not something to brag about.

Being a bioengineering major, I've had many occasions at work to be the person who translates between the biologists and the engineers, who otherwise couldn't understand each other. It was usually fun, as the biologists would say "you may be an engineer, but at least we can talk to you," and vice versa from the engineers.

In more recent years, this might be less of a problem, since the newer hires seem not to be quite as stovepiped.

Wham! (Netflix, 13/19, WB)

A short and enjoyable but thoroughly disposable documentary about the British pop duo. I accidentally watched it because my wife had it on while I was doing something else. I guess that's what Documentaries really shine - putting you behind the scenes for something that you knew nothing about.

I hate overrated lists. When someone claims someone or something is overrated they're usually just saying: here's something/someone popular that I don't like as much as most people. Uninteresting and doesn't further any conversations. Can work in sports where you can back up your claims with empirical evidence.

Lot to unpack here. First, he manages to make up a story about how Zelensky would back him up in saying that Trump didn't blackmail him.
