The book that Oski is reading in the picture above is WONDERFUL. It is by Ron Fimrite and chronicles Cal football from the birth of the university through the end of the Bruce Snyder Era. I don't do much pleasure reading, but I could not put this one down. 19/19

I knew nothing about the Crimean War and slipped down the Wikipedia hole. It is fascinating how much this somewhat forgotten war impacted history

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

If an email reminder doesn’t specify that it is a “friendly reminder” are we to assume it’s a hostile reminder?

I'm going to admit I didn't watch The Office when it was on the tube. Maybe I should.

I’ve gone full circle. I didn’t watch when it was first on. Watched and enjoyed in reruns. But now I’ve seen it enough that I rarely catch an episode.

Tampa Bay Rays to stay as the city council approves their new baseball field to replace Tropicana with a new one near it and redevelop the land where Tropicana was. [checks calendar] Wait, Tropicana Field is 34 years old? Aren't the Rays a fairly new team? How old am I?

Expand full comment

You forget - the Trop was built to attract a baseball team. The first intended victims were the San Francisco Giants.

I went to Grapefruit League this year, choosing the St. Pete's area to watch games. That city is cursed from a transportation standpoint. It has a giant bay in the middle, bridges as choke points, no credible mass-public transport, and very few true highways, which means that traffic goes block-by-block surface roads with traffic lights. This means traffic is a bear and going anywhere is a major pain. And goodness help those people if a hurricane bulls-eyes them because the whole city is barely above sea-level.

ESPN somehow manufactures a story how Bronny James will win the NBA rookie of the year

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40591051/bronny-james-becomes-popular-pick-rookie-year

ESPN has become a complete farce over the years. It’s simply ridiculous.

As a sports fan, it’s also sad to see a once fantastic platform be reduced to a total joke.

Expand full comment

Other than to watch a live game, I never tune to ESPN.

Yeah, I felt that also as I read the headline. But the article is just citing betting numbers. People like a long shot with the last name James attached. Just for fun people take the bait; it gets a lot of action by people who are not serious gamblers. Bronny James should not even see the floor for the Lakers this year. But, he may get some brief PT for kicks with his dad, and folks will eat it up. I think, aside from the money, this will ultimately be an embarrassment for him as those who are in the least basketball savvy know he’s only going to be there because of nepotism. Also, I feel for the players who get passed over, on account of the Lakers making room for this young man who is not ready for professional basketball. Even a G League spot is not really warranted, IMHO.

I think he was once a serious business reporter but then he went on his anti-immigrant screeds and later went totally off the rails.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I remember that. He was a part of CNN as a serious business reporter. But he lost credibility when he became anti-immigrant. It's insane to hold anti-immigrant views when you report on business and espouse a pro-business perspective. Immigrants make critical contributions to the American economy EVERY DAY. Honestly, I don't understand the blindness.

The handwriting's been on the wall for a couple of days now.

July 16 - President Biden said that he would step aside if a physician diagnosed him with a medical condition.

July 17 - President Biden returns his home in Delaware after a confirmed positive for COVID-19.

That's all the pretext anyone would need to bow out gracefully, if in fact, they were looking for an out.

RIP Bob Newhart

Great stand up comic and The Bob Newhart Show was one of the best sitcoms of all time. Never heard a negative word about him. My father once was at the same blackjack table as him in Tahoe. Said he was funny even while playing cards.

IMHO, the last episode of Newhart was the best moment of scripted television EVER.
