8.4% of Americans are unvaccinated against polio. Apropos: the US reported its first polio case in over a decade. If you travel abroad, the CDC recommends that you get a polio booster - which is only required once in your lifetime.

Cats (family felidae) are split between larger cats who roar (lions, tigers, leopards and panthers - sub-family pantherinae) and cats who purr (cougars, ocelots, bobcats, cheetahs, and uh, cats - sub-family felinae) there is only one cat who is stuck between purring and roaring, and that is the snow leopard.

Expand full comment

What does the snow leopard do? Neither of those?

Expand full comment

the (online) scholarship is mixed. Some sites say they can roar (sounds like a chuff to me) and some sites say they can purr. They the physiology of other leopards but it seems like their vocalizations aren't quite as well defined - might also be because they're super rare.

Chris Pine (UC Berkeley, BA English 2002) and Michelle Rodriguez will star in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Honestly, D&D probably has negative equity value, so I'm thinking this film will not do well and go to streaming pretty quickly. That being said, my inner nerd likes that there is an owlbear, mimic, gelatinous cube, and an acid-spewing black dragon.

TIL: Chris Pine's wiki page says he was in Beta Alpha Psi business fraternity at UC Berkeley, which I doubt. I was an officer of BAP and you had to be an accounting major with a high GPA to be in it. Pine was an English major and far too handsome to be in it.

Saw the Melvins last night at Cornerstone in Berkeley. For dudes pushing 60, they still put on a fantastic show. The opener Helm’s Alee, one of my favorite newish bands, played a very Melvins influenced set. Sadly since it was the last show of the tour and the merch was basically non-existent, save for a lone 3XL shirt and some used drum sticks and a smattering of vinyl. 20/19 WB

Hey Students Bears and I had a lovely lunch in Manhattan yesterday. Lovely cocktail followed by various dried meats + white-carbs topped with fat and stinky preserved seafood delights. I took an hour-long train ride gently rocking me in the heat, which means I took a 4 hour nap afterwards. My sleep-eat-train-eat-train-sleep-eat-sleep day was pretty much a perfect day.

REPLACEABLE

I have worked on some law firm insolvencies, and there are always a few key folks who, if they depart, will trigger a death spiral of reduced revenue and thus more departures which reduces revenue even more and so on until a chapter 7 trustee takes over.

Law firms are weird things but on some level I think that is true of any company. If some key engineers leave a tech company, key scientists leave a biotech, key bankers leave a bank, and so on, it can cause the company to crater. A company is just a legal fiction anyway; it ultimately does not and cannot exist without people.

Hot take on Realignment: “… college football as we’ve known it for three decades— is on the verge of being eviscerated on three fronts. Networks are poaching the best brands. Universities are poaching the best coaches. Boosters are poaching the top players.” Just had to share this depressing but insightful quote from the Denver post. https://www.denverpost.com/2022/07/21/cu-buffs-big-12-pac-12-ncaa-realignment/

Expand full comment

Doesn't seem like this involves Cal. Or about half the Pac, 12 or 10.

Expand full comment

That’s just it! For schools like Cal and everyone outside of the SEC and now the BIG, we were never going to be competitive with them given the reality of big money 💰 in sports but now it’s been pretty much legalized. So it’ll be the semi pro teams affiliated with schools in name only versus the still real student athletes.

Buying a 2010 Mazda 3 hatch later this afternoon for No 2. It's got about 82K on it. Seems to be in very good condition with the usual maintenance required (fluids, etc). New tires and good brakes so nothing expensive. Small valve cover gasket leak, which I'll probably let my mechanic do since I haven't done one of those and we'll be driving it to Nashville in a few weeks. I'll take care of everything else (oil, transmission fluid, coolant, plugs, filters, etc).

Prices are outrageous for everything. Got it for 11750 which may be a little high but it's a 1 owner car that was basically driven around town.
