Welcome to the Daily Bear Dump, a Write for California community board where one can talk about anything - Cal related or off-topic. Comment threads are sorted by topic. Anything is fine, so long as you’re generally civil.
Exactly. I have a bunch of beloved relatives who have reached the age that they get terminal diseases. This year alone, I have had to or am going to say goodbye to two different people with a final visit. And before them, I had the opportunity to say goodbye to my own mother and then my father. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to say good-bye - as long as possible. And nobody ever talks about the end and nobody ever says goodbye. It's always "I love you" and "until next time" with a giant hug knowing full well that there won't be another. And then you ugly cry in the car, which I'll take 10 out of 10 times versus hearing about somebody's sudden death.
Watching the Nats while eating lunch. That reminded me that when I got home yesterday Caleb Lomavita was in the booth being interviewed during the game before heading down to camp in Florida. He had a great presence and was big on his growing up in Hawaii. A fine representative of Cal.
The California lacrosse team was named an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad for the 2023-24 academic year on Wednesday. To qualify for the honor a team must have a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA for the academic year.
In addition, eight members of Cal's 2024 team – Addie Fischer, Callan Fritsch, Kalena Johnson, Kate Rothman, Caroline Roxas, Charlotte Smith, Belle Tiesi and Mya Wang – were named to the IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.50 cumulative academic GPA or greater, and having junior, senior or graduate student status.
California assistant Chad Highberger will be on the coaching staff for USA Baseball's 2024 16U/17U National Team Development Program (NTDP), which takes place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina on Thursday through Sunday.
BERKELEY – A record-setting 59 Golden Bears will be on hand for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The Summer Games begin Thursday for Cal's contingent, with women's soccer alumni Sydney Collins and Ifeoma Onumonu competing for Canada and Nigeria, respectively, in group play. The Opening Ceremony is on Friday, and the Olympics run through Aug. 11.
BERKELEY – A total of 154 California student-athletes across 13 sports were named to the 2024 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The Golden Bears had the second-most honorees in the conference. Women's rowing paced all 13 of Cal's sports with 30 selections.
Southwest Airlines to move to assigned seating because people hate the whole gaming of the system of checking in the day before the minute that you can otherwise you're near the potties
Even though they didn't offer pricier seats, they did charge you extra for the privilege of checking in earlier and moving toward the front of the boarding line.
Interesting. I don't like flying southwest. Partly because I don't want to have to check in right at 24 hours to have a chance at a window or aisle seat. Also because Southwest flights seem to be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather much more often.
DJT calls for jail time for those who desecrate the flag and calls people who say that is unconstitutional are "stupid people" because not being ignorant of what the Constitution says is apparently stupid.
Morocco stuns Argentina in soccer 2-1 on an end-of-match equalizer that was disallowed (see link) after [checks notes]... two hours of VAR analysis. Olympic soccer is an under-23 tournament to reduce competition against the pro divisions, unlike other sports.
[Rugby 7s] USA surprisingly tied France 12-12, but expectedly lost to Fiji 38-12. The top two teams, plus two of the three third place finishers advance out of pool play. And that pretty much got settled on the first day. Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Argentina, and France advance. The key match that matters today is USA vs Uruguay - win and they are in. Bubble teams that are at risk to miss out are South Africa and Samoa.
JP Sears struggles as Athletics fall to Astroshttps://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/7/24/24205522/athletics-vs-astros-recap
JP Sears unraveled in the seventh and the Oakland Athletics’ offense was unable to string anything together Wednesday in a 8-1 loss to the Houston Astros.
The Astros got off to a quick start against JP Sears in Wednesday’s game. Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman led off the game with a pair of singles. Sears got Yordan Alvarez to ground into a force out for the first out, but Yainer Diaz plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to give Houston an early lead.
A closer affair than the final score of 8-3 to the Giants would indicate, this game which marked the return of Tyler Glasnow was overshadowed by a different arm coming back from injury, Robbie Ray was lights out and a late blow-up by the Dodgers' pen secured Wednesday night’s loss at Dodger Stadium.
CC Sabathia tells a story how the Phillies would offer great cheesesteak only in the VISITING clubhouse. Have we considered offering fresh hot Cheeseboard pizza to visitors?
OK they are 100% burying the lede here. The benches cleared after Cal (who went to Stanford) screamed at McGuire "You jacked off in a parking lot you dumb fuck".
(McGuire was once arrested for, you guessed it, jacking off in a parking lot when he was with the Jays)
My mother's side of the family tended to be shorter and my father's side was taller. I also hoped I would take after dad's side, but I turned out to be more of an average between the two.
Is everyone aware that you're taller in the morning than in the evening? Your vertebral joints expand during the night and compress under gravity while being upright during the day. I used to measure myself as 5/8" taller in the morning.
Astronauts, having no gravity 24/7, can expand by 1.5 inches.
Brother is 6'6 and the tallest. I am 6'2 and my 13 year old son is almost 6'2 as well. I stopped growing right around freshman year of high school so I am wondering if he might do the same.
I may have been 6'-0" for a moment when I was 17, but I doubt it. I think I topped out at 5' 11-7/8". But I digress. I was the tallest in my immediate family before I graduated high school; taller than any of my siblings and taller than my mother (5'-2") and step-father (5'-10").
My oldest is taller than me - he's 6'-1" and my youngest (Happy B'day, Double D!) is 5'-11". I am now third tallest now that I have shrunk to 5'-10-3/4".
I peaked out at 5'-11 and 7/8" the nurse would re-do it several times and said she could not call it 6' as my mother was in on this....if I reached 6' it would $100.00 in my pocket and she would only accept measurements at the Doc's. My hair had to be short enough too, so the bar laid flat.
Four years ago I started getting flat 5-11 readings. Demoralizing.
No 3 is 6 feet tall. We all thought he was over 6' tall until we measured him last week. Perhaps he was measured using shoes last time. I was 5'10 and seem to have shrunk a little bit as well. I do have a cousin that is 6'1 or 6'2.
My trans-daughter is the tallest person in my and my wife's combined family history - but that's literally a low bar. She's 6 feet tall. I used to be the tallest at 5'11" but I have shrunk by more than an inch, which is disturbing.
This is UCLA's PR department's fault. He needed to have been media trained and had his presentation vetted. It's like that one wedding that everyone has been to where the best man gets up unprepared who thought "I got this. I'm charming. I can wing it" before fumbling in the spotlight.
Circa 74, tall Olde English 800.
It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.
You always hear people say they hate goodbyes (especially long ones). Isn’t there anyone who enjoys goodbyes?
I enjoy goodbyes with toxic people. I'm stone cold blooded that way.
I guess it depends on if you like the person or not.
Exactly. I have a bunch of beloved relatives who have reached the age that they get terminal diseases. Yes, unexpected deaths with no chance to say goodbye are so painful.
