I totally misjudged him due to what he looks like. He does everything from pop to mumble rap, trap, pop R&B, to even hard core country. He's a chameleon.

Debby stalled over Savannah, reversed direction and now is heading back out to sea where she will gather strength and appears to now come ashore in South Carolina, which means that I'll get a more directly hit since I'll be on the front/right side of the storm. Looks like I won't need to water the lawn this week.

kinda hot around here .. high 80s.

headed to LA tomorrow morning for a reunion weekend type thing w/ friends from a job a while back. weather looks good out there .. 80s, sunny etc.

hoping to play tennis, maybe get in the water, barre classes ..

heard it was hot in LA yesterday. It was relatively cool in the East Bay yesterday, but hot again today and tomorrow. Then back to being probably average the rest of the week.

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

If something can be far-fetched why can’t something else be near-fetched or just fetched? (And no, I’m not trying to make fetch happen).

Expand full comment

Because "fetch" implies that one has to go get it. "Far" makes it an arduous task.

Expand full comment

maybe if is nearby you dont need to fetch it. you just reach out your hand and pick up your beer, for example.

getting a beer from the beer fridge in the basement is a little far-fetched

I think the nearby version is "picking low-hanging fruit".

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Expand full comment
author

I travel frequently up to my vacation home in Northern NC, which goes through some rural parts of town. In 2016 and 2020, this land was chock-a-block with Trump campaign signs. This year - none. They are all replaced by American flags. I take it as a sign that Trumpers are still Trumpers, but they have reached a point of shame. I have no illusion that they will vote any different.

Expand full comment

i think Dems/liberals should "take the flag back." seems strange that flying an American flag implies you are a Trumper.

Expand full comment

Last summer were were vacationing up near the California-Oregon border. Crossed into Oregon, where it was very conservative. We spotted a Democratic Party office. The woman inside said “there’s few of us, but we’re feisty!” She said what you said, we need to take the flag back. Gave us several red/white/blue signs and posters.

Expand full comment

That's been my position since Reagan was president. I'm highly critical of liberal "leadership", because I don't see it.

As new polls roll out, Kamala Harris eeks a tiny national lead, but still trails in where it matters in the swing states - WI (D+1), MI (tied), PA (D+2), GA (R+2), NC (R+2), AZ (R+5), NV (R+1)

even w/ those results, if we give MI to Harris, she wins 270-268.

kidding .. i am generally fine with it.

i think that even though everyone keeps saying "you need an old white guy on the ticket to balance it out" .. we would be better served with a new generation of leaders.

Expand full comment

Yes he does help get the swing state vote, but this leads to him being the next presidential nominee if Harris goes through her two terms. So alternating an old white guy and a non-old white guy.

Expand full comment

I'm not sure that it does. Walz is 60. In 8 years, he'll be 68, but I doubt he'll be any better positioned to be president even if he's been VP to a wildly popular president.

I read an interesting factoid about the very close men's 100m dash finals. The race - won by American Noah Lyles won by 0.005 seconds - was so close that even eight place finisher Oblique Seville was only 0.12 seconds behind at 0.91 seconds. Seville would have won a gold medal in most other Olympic finals. Four of the ten fastest times in Olympic final history were run in that race, including two would have beaten Usain Bolt in 2016

A’s deliver White Sox record 21st loss in a row

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/8/5/24214281/oakland-athletics-chicago-white-sox-jp-sears-lawrence-butler-zack-gelof

From the Battle of the Bay to the Battle of the Bottom, the Oakland Athletics defeated the league-worst Chicago White Sox, who now have lost an AL-record 21 losses in a row.

While the two teams represent the bottom of the AL, the A’s clearly entered the game as the favorites, carrying a whopping 20 more victories than the Sox this season. And they performed like it, delivering an all-around 5-1 victory and taking their July momentum into August.

Sorry for being late today with the DBD. Mrs. SGB had a medical issue yesterday - she's fine, thank you - but it left us with plenty of time waiting in the hospital. We watched five episodes of Shark Tank. I don't know what series or season these were from. As a former Private Equity portfolio manager, I have to say that the valuations were absolutely ridiculous and a lot of them needed post-launch small business loans rather than equity. I smell a rat. I have to imagine that given their business stage and outrageously high valuations and seemingly near zero due-diligence, they producers know that the companies are going to get a giant sales bump by being on the show - so they have agreed to fund the companies cross-subsidized by a revenue share agreement covered by an NDA. It seems like pretend private equity that gives people a false sense of how difficult it is to raise equity.
