The gymnast pictured above looks very familiar. Any idea who she is? Might have been at Cal.

Never mind. It's Italian gymnast Giorgia Villa.

I often hear of people making bucket lists. I’m surprised so many people own enough buckets to make a list of them. Why do people have so many buckets?

Everybody has one, figuratively speaking.

Buckets are handy for handling and transporting bulk and assortments of miscellaneous items.

Also, many products come in buckets, and they are easy to repurpose. Good on both the economic and environmental fronts.

Marist poll reconfirms Harris' massive polling number improvements. She leads Trump by 3 points nationally which essentially means she's tied with Trump in the electoral college.

In the Arizona fake electors case, there have been several developments. First, there was released documents that showed that the Grand Jury recommended that Donald Trump be prosecuted, but the Prosecutor dissuaded the idea because there was a parallel Federal case happening, which upset several members of the GJ. Secondly, a small fish in the case accepted a plea deal, accepting pleading guilty to a misdemeanor rather than nine felonies. Third, Jenna Ellis accepted a plea deal with her cooperation in exchange for charges being dropped. An insider to the whole scheme cooperating bodes badly for the other 15 defendants, which include Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows. This trial will proceed in October.

Rep Cori Bush (D-MO), a member of the so-called "Squad" progressive wing of the Democratic party, got primaried. Along with Jamaal Bowman, this is the second of the six Squad members who have been primaried in a shift toward moderatism.

Some of the Squad seem like pretty smart politicians (AOC, Pressley). Some of them don't, and I think Bowman and Bush fell into the latter category. Too combative and said too many divisive things that split their own base. This is how it goes.

Expand full comment

That is how it should be. I may share many sentiments of "progressives", but they are fragile beings with a "my way or the highway" ethos.

See their rhetoric about Gaza.

I'm afraid I'll have to part company with you on this one. I think any and every political faction you can name has a certain degree of fragility and inflexibility on certain issues. It's the nature of strongly-held views. I find conservatives particularly fragile and intractable on myriad issues.

Expand full comment

Conservatives are the opposition. I expect their crap having seen it for my whole life. They'd sell their mother if they thought it'd help their position.

Not the same with progressives. They're supposed to be on our side, with the side that cares about people, the environment, good governance, and civil rights. It seems their support is conditional on meeting their demands.

Expand full comment

I just don't see it that way at all. I think progressives push for certain things very aggressively and that more moderate democrats are either afraid to embrace what they consider extreme positions that may lose them votes or refusing to compromise. I suppose what we have here is a matter of different perspectives perhaps based on slightly differing ideologies, me -- the old Berkeley radical -- being closer to progressives. Also refusing to compromise on certain core principles (or demands) is not always a bad thing.

Expand full comment

The problem is there just is no consensus about exactly what is best for "people, the environment, good governance, and civil rights" (and a number of other things), particularly given that there will be trade-offs. The best we can strive for is some form of informed compromise. Instead, we have an unprecedented number of people on various sides of various issues that are "dug in", and won't budge, much less compromise.

Athletics lose to White Sox 5-1

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/8/6/24215091/athletics-white-sox-gelof-benintendi

The Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox faced off at the Oakland Coliseum for game two of a three-game set. The Sox, entering tonight with an MLB-worst losing streak at 21 games, hoped to avoid surpassing the 1988 Orioles for the longest losing streak ever.

Mark Kotsay sent Ross Stripling to the mound facing Jonathan Cannon, the 24-year-old rookie righty out of the University of Georgia.

Baseball is a rollercoaster and so are emotions. My emotions, your emotions, everyone’s emotions. If you disagree with that statement then you’re probably emotionally constipated. I would prescribe a diet of therapy, a Joni Mitchell album, and The Notebook.

Occasionally those rollercoasters are connected. The San Francisco Giants hop in a hard, cramped buggy, get strapped in with shoulder contraptions that look like leather car seats but somehow feel like cement blocks, and turn around to see that you’re in the seat behind them, desperately hoping they don’t vomit.

Clayton Kershaw’s strong outing not enough to avoid Dodgers loss to Phillies

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/6/24215073/dodgers-clayton-kershaw-brusdar-graterol-brent-honeywell-phillies

Other than Clayton Kershaw showing positive signs, there was very little to celebrate as the Dodgers lost 6-2 to the Phillies on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Blow-up outings can happen even with the best of pitchers, and that wasn’t necessarily the biggest cause for concern in Kershaw’s last outing. However, the inability to create swing-and-miss action, ending the longest streak in the modern era of games with at least one strikeout, raised some eyebrows. Diminished velocity was also concerning.

Pats drop out of negotiations with 49ers Aiyuk. Steelers, Browns, and Commanders are still reportedly interested, but parties are far apart. Aiyuk wants $30m and the 49ers want a lot in return. 49ers seem to be gambling that Aiyuk and his agent will be rational and see that the market for him is not as hot as he thinks it is.

ACC shows.

They are giving us lip service, especially about Jaydn, but, in the end, I'm pretty sure they don't know what to make of us.

The overall reception seems cool to me.

And I can't blame them, it would seem it's not just us facing uncertainty about college football. If I were an ACC legacy program, I'd not be plussed with the new additions to the conference.

Anyway...

Go Bears!

I watched a decent amount of ACC football last year once after we knew we were coming. For the most part, it is brutal to watch and they were easily the 5th of the P5 last year. FSU was really good but Louisville would've lost 3-4 conference games last year in the P12 easily. Yes, a bunch of schools had nice portal classes so maybe the quality is better but it'll still be below what we've played against in the Pac for a while. SMU is not much better... gaudy record but they were 0-3 against P5 teams and while BlowU was good, TCU and Boston College were distinctly average.

So sure, I get it that they don't know what to expect from us... but I really feel like we have an opportunity to surprise some folks over there. Early word from Fall camp is pretty positive. We have some concerns on DL in terms of quality and depth but virtually every other position looks pretty good, especially on offense. If Mendoza is even slightly better than average, we could have a 9 win season with our schedule. If Mendoza is "good", 10 wins is a thing IMO.

I love the sunshine.

"Louisville would've lost 3-4 conference games"

LOL I guess we know that from our experience with Plummer, one step forward, two steps back. Somebody on one of the shows buzzed how Plummer's promise seems to fade. I wish him the best, but found his play frustrating.

ACC fans don't know what to make of us because they have no frame of reference for us. At least when Utah and Colorado came into the Pac-10 and made it the Pac-12 in 2011, Cal fans had rubbed elbows with Utah and Colorado fans at least somewhat recently in football.

I don't think that exists today for ACC fans re: Cal and Stanfurd.

To a single team specialist like myself is tough. Being well educated and up to speed on a whole conference is even harder as essentially a full time job. National coverage is nearly impossible, even if it is your full time job. A case in point is SB Nation's Syracuse's take on us where they focus on us, but don't really know us. I think the group-think chat is perhaps a bit closer to reality than the journalist's.

Yes, I'd like measure our impression more through a crowd-source sample than individual talking heads. Most of the them are just repeating presser talking points. But even such chat is new; not sure many ACC schools even knew "Cal" existed, although they likely know all the bad things about Berkeley. LOL

Expand full comment

Crowd source and established media are both comprised of both experienced and well-sourced observers that know a lot about what they are talking about, and those that are not, but more than willing to collect clicks/views. You have to be reasonably informed to validate what you are being told.

famous last words but this has been the least number of major injuries in Fall camp that I can remember. And because of portal recruiting, we have the depth to survive a Vatikani being out. Also, Pawlawski supposedly is comparing Morrow to Troy Auzenne... so we got that going for us.

But if we lose more DL or Edge, our front 7 is going to be a sieve
