Drive-in

Expand full comment

Newellbany and I used to go to the Drive-In up in upstate NY...good times.

I've seen more than a few movies in a drive-in when I was but a lad. Two that I recall are Bonnie and Clyde and The Sting.

Bonnie and Clyde I saw at the Hilltop Drive-In. The Sting I saw at the Coliseum Drive-In.

I have a vague recollection of my uncle taking me and one of my brothers to see The Incredible Mr. Limpet, starring the voice of Don Knotts, at the Coliseum. Old.

almost, almost, almost, only as a kid - except for one movie which my GF's older sister was working at a Drive-in in Compton (a bit rough) to watch Airplane! - which I still love! (the movie, not the drive-in)

Is that drive in still around? Most in San Diego have closed.

I think the only one in the east bay is the one in Concord. Not sure where else there is a drive in in the Bay Area. I remember seeing the huge one in Union City (?) on drives down to my cousin in Fremont. It had the big red sign facing the freeway (back of a screen I assume) with all the movies it was playing. Unsurprisingly it's no longer there and I think it's the location of a large strip mall that includes a Krispy Kreme and a Best Buy and other stuff.

No idea - I'm not sure I've been by that area in Compton since that date.

I'm honestly not sure there are. My dad died when his house burned to the ground in February and he was unable to get out. Sifting through that pile of ash that was his home, seeing how even the most sturdy and seemingly indestructible things have been completely obliterated, has been eye opening. I think the best you can hope for is that they succumbed to smoke inhalation before they were incinerated.

Max Muncy, Ryan Yarbrough fuel Dodgers late comeback win over Rockies

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/8/10/23828067/max-muncy-ryan-yarbrough-dodgers-rockies-clayton-kershaw-ty-blach

LOS ANGELES — The pitching duel between Clayton Kershaw as Ty Blach was as stingy as expected, but newcomer Ryan Yarbrough provided a scoreless bridge to a Dodgers comeback, and Max Muncy drove in single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Rockies 2-1 on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers have won five straight games, and are 9-1 since the trade deadline.

Kershaw held up his end of the bargain. Pitching in a game for the first time in over six weeks, the left-hander allowed only a fifth-inning solo home run to Elehuris Montero. That snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak by Kershaw, which dated back to June 14.

DeSantis reiterates that if he's elected POTUS, he's for using drone strikes against drug cartels smuggling drugs. When asked how people will know the difference between drug-smuggling cartel members and just run-of-the-mill brown immigrants, DeSantis says “Same way somebody operating in Iraq would know. You know, these people in Iraq at the time, they all looked the same. You didn’t know who had a bomb strapped to them. So those guys have to make judgments.”

Yes, because I am sure Mexico would love for the US to be launching a bunch of drone strikes in their territory. Or does he mean to launch them on US soil? I can’t see that “my policy is to indiscriminately kill people in the border zone” would be disqualifying among Republican primary voters, so why doesn’t he just say it?

Expand full comment

Because he doesn't want to turn off the independent voter who isn't quite as sharp. He also wants to speak in dog whistles which Trump did rather effectively in '16 and '20, maintaining some sort of plausible deniability about his actual intent.

Rep. Gaetz calls LGBTQ+ people "degenerate" and announces a bill to stop preventing anyone from praying at school. This is a political stunt that probably won't get passed, but if this gets passed - the bill is so broad that I am quietly confident that would have kids doing Muslim call-to-prayer and it would create a GOP shitstorm that would reveal that it was never about religious freedom and always about white Christian nationalism.

Watched Painkiller, Netflix’s answer to Hulu’s Dopesick, which was a far superior program…it’s kinda like the whole Armageddon v. Deep Impact/Dante’s Peak v. Volcano…

Tough to see Ferris Bueller get old, but he did in fact play a HS senior while in his mid-20’s, so there’s that. Taylor Kitsch was great, as was Crazy Eyes from OITNB. Duchovney/Tea Leoni’s daughter also in it. Makes you mad all over again at the Sackler’s, along with the spineless US Government.

I just watched the first episode of this last night and I enjoyed it. I haven’t seen Dopesick, I’ll have to check it out.

I thought Dopesick was great, though the similarities are striking.

Texas A&M's "12th Man" foundation announced it is closing its NIL branch after the IRS declared that funneling money to college players is not tax deductible for the donors

I need Fire Sarkey to come here and spill all the aTm tea.

Expand full comment

The backstory that I am hearing is more focused on TAMU's NIL program structure versus the tax implications which is the excuse they used to shut it down. Texas signed a law which basically allows Texas schools to do whatever they want from an NIL perspective...including giving stadium and seating perks for big donations... basically, the schools would then be indirectly paying athletes (which is a common misperception about NIL. Schools CANNOT pay players directly, only individuals, donor led initiatives like Cal has or businesses can). This is something both Texas and TAMU announced they were going to do. The SEC had a big problem with that because of the perception that if you're giving good seats to people who dump money into the NIL fund, then you'll have an unfair advantage against the rest of the SEC who can't do this. So behind the scenes, SEC told both schools to kill it. Texas shrugged and did so (their NIL set up is redonk and isn't even going full steam yet) but TAMU said naw, we're going to do it anyways. That didn't last long... someone apparently shook them by the neck and they found religion real quick. The tax incentive thing is going away but its immaterial in the big picture. TAMU will form up like the rest of the major schools and figure it out
