"Salman Rushdie is attacked onstage in Western New York.
The author Salman Rushdie, who spent years in hiding and under police protection after Iranian officials called for his execution, was attacked and stabbed in the neck on Friday while onstage in Chautauqua, near Erie in western New York, the state police said.
The attack happened at about 11 a.m., shortly after Mr. Rushdie took the stage to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, a community in western New York that offers arts and literary programming during the summer."
In DBD A/V Club I was going to ask a dangerous question: What movie opened your eyes to the concept (however unclear) of the possibility of sex when you were a kid?
To be fair, there were a number of *very* attractive women in Casino Royale, including Barbara Bouchet, Joanna Pettet, Dahliah Lavi, and yes, Deborah Kerr.
My parents took me to see the movie Grease when I was a kid. There was some mention of a pregnancy and they explained what that was. Weird way to learn about the birds and bees, I think.
Folks took me to the Chevy Chase movie Modern Problems when I was 8 and immediately regretted it, as there were some scenes that weren’t appropriate for an 8 year-old...
My first crush was Lindsay Wagner in The Bionic Woman tv show.
Revenge of the Nerds was first film nudity I remember...think I was 11 or 12.
Private Benjamin, 1980. My ultra-feminist mom took me to it. There is an all-female shower scene, nothing over-the-top just a bunch of naked bodies. 10-year old me saw the world differently after that.
I honestly have no idea. My parents regularly took us to R rated movies, but I recall mostly violence (Dirty Harry, for example). If there was sex it was lost on me.
I recall much more becoming aware of sex via books -- particularly Jaws and The Godfather, both when I was around 9-10 (yes, I read completely age inappropriate books).
Wow, I'm sure mine came from PG rated movies, which can still contain attractive women. Wasn't exactly sex, just a special attraction (that one didn't really understand, but felt like something).
A list of documents removed from former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, include materials marked as top secret and meant to be viewed only in secure government facilities, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Federal agents who executed a search warrant on Monday seized 11 sets of documents in all, including some marked as “classified/TS/SCI” documents — shorthand for “top secret/sensitive compartmentalized information,” according to the report.
In total, agents collected four sets of top secret documents, three sets of secret documents and three sets of confidential documents, The Journal reported, saying it had reviewed the inventory of items taken in the search. Included in the manifest were also files pertaining to the pardon of Roger J. Stone Jr., a longtime associate of Mr. Trump, and a briefing dossier on President Emmanuel Macron of France.
JFC. and he could have easily avoided all this trouble by having one of the indentured servants at Mar-a-lego photo copy it all then return it when the archives asked for it back. 'oops didn't mean to keep that stuff'.
You can "...think not..." all you want. But clearly Trump is under investigation for criminal actions or misconduct. When it comes to espionage, I don't care if we're talking about a former president or an electrical engineer from New Jersey.
Given the updates I'm seeing from the NY Times, I think an arrest warrant becomes more likely with each passing day.
The broad hint I've seen is that he is suspected of obstructing an investigation brought by the federal government.
From one such NYT update -
"Of the three criminal laws cited in the search warrant, one stood out as raising new questions: Section 1519 of Title 18 of the United States Code. While the other two laws clearly apply to a basic situation where someone has taken or retained certain government documents that do not belong to him, Section 1519 is an obstruction law. It applies to document crimes undertaken “with the intent to impede, obstruct, or influence the investigation or proper administration of any matter” within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies. That raises the question: What do investigators suspect that Trump, by hoarding the documents, was trying to impede?"
Heard about this from my BIL, who lives close to where this horrible accident happened:
"A Los Angeles County district attorney charged a traveling nurse from Houston, Texas, with six counts of murder and five counts gross vehicular manslaughter Monday after she allegedly caused a horrifying crash last week.
Nicole Linton appeared in Los Angeles County District court to hear the charges brought against her, according to CBS LA:"
The video where it happened was circulating online - it didn't look real at all, it looked like a scene from a movie how fast she drove into that intersection.
I saw this video the first day it happened on our local news. It seems like something out of a movie. I still haven’t heard any explanation given for why she was driving at such a high rate of speed and through the light.
I just assumed she was drunk or under the influence but that doesn’t seem likely. I thought maybe she was having a seizure. Distracted driving? Or just simply a terrible driver.
Absolutely f-ing horrific….you can’t un-see it. Woman has been involved in 12 accidents already…
A day later, actress Anne Heche was basically killed when she drove into a house, which was subsequently destroyed by fire. Just an awful couple of days on the road all around in LA.
The Anne Heche video is crazy too. You have to think she was committing suicide. She drove into a garage, didn't get hurt. so took off, got up to top speed and drove into a house. They're taking her off life support as soon as they find places to donate her organs.
Very sad. I’m not familiar with the Mar Vista neighborhood, but footage from the day showed her little blue Mini Cooper traveling at excessively high rates of speed....
It's a small neighborhood just west of Venice and east of Culver City, very quaint and mainly quiet. Used to be the more the affordable option to Venice, but is now almost just as expensive. The report said she was also on cocaine and fentanyl, so likely very under the influence.
2. (will wait til monday for other stuff, so as to avoid spoilers...I have a couple of "wait a minute..." questions)

3. @Cugel...wondering which surprise you mean. if it's the post-needle drop, then I don't think that was a surprise. but they did handle it very well (making it a surprise)
They did hint that character was leaning that way . . . but at the climax, it looked like that character was done, so to see them in the flash forward, where they were was a surprise - especially with the curtain pull back.
What the....? It's 6:48 AM here on the West Coast and this is the first comment? In that case I'll start us off with a "Gimme a go Bears on three. One, two, three...."

In DBD A/V Club I was going to ask a dangerous question: What movie opened your eyes to the concept (however unclear) of the possibility of sex when you were a kid?
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
I saw it soon after it was released in 1969 at the Oaks Theater on Solano Ave in North Berkeley. It had an M rating.
Come to think of it, it was probably even earlier than Butch Cassidy. Maybe, for instance, Casino Royale with David Niven in the lead role.
Interesting, that Casino Royale is such a mess, but it has a few good moments, but do you remember the actress? I definitely do in my case.
Ursula Andress. And Jacqueline Bissett.
To be fair, there were a number of *very* attractive women in Casino Royale, including Barbara Bouchet, Joanna Pettet, Dahliah Lavi, and yes, Deborah Kerr.
Ah, that certainly makes a lot of sense - I didn't see that movie until I was an adult - and responding more to the movie itself.
I still have a mad crush on Katherine Ross from this & The Graduate, tho both were a titch before my time…
Uh, yeah. I wonder why.
Risky Business
There a TV show in the 60s called Discovery, hosted by a man and a woman. I think I had a crush on the woman.
I also saw Modern Problems was too early (I was 7 and went with my uncle and 9 year old cousin)
Some hilarious scenes - an incredibly underrated comedy…Cugel would hate it ;-)
First nudity for me was Last Tango, which I saw when I was 17, but I didn't want to be at all like the Brando character.
Private Benjamin, 1980. My ultra-feminist mom took me to it. There is an all-female shower scene, nothing over-the-top just a bunch of naked bodies. 10-year old me saw the world differently after that.

The Sonny's giant dick story line and his search for a satisfactory vagina is really really odd.
VC Andrews was a little bit of a gateway author for me in the early 80's.
Wow, I'm sure mine came from PG rated movies, which can still contain attractive women. Wasn't exactly sex, just a special attraction (that one didn't really understand, but felt like something).
Man, if I list my two, I will seriously date myself, but honestly, I'm kinda curious about how this question applies to women.
For me it would have to be one of the Jason slasher movies or Revenge of the Nerds.

How long until an arrest warrant is issued?
Arrest? I think not, but some other suit is possible.

Ms. Linton's attorney is claiming mental health issues. Maybe so. What she did is not easily explainable assuming a rational person behind the wheel.

The end episode of season 3 For All Mankind was pretty amazing, and had one big surprise at the end. I swear, looks like a season 4 is coming.
They are filming S4 now, but changed art directors so my wife is no longer on the show.

In my short time on the show I helped decorate the memorial fence, hung up lots of pictures, trinkets and stuffed animals.
Well done!
Season 4 is definitely coming with that awesome needle drop from Radiohead.

agreed...it was s surprise, but not a SURPRISE ;-)
