I think Cal Bears Beer should be called “Cal Beers”. Bear Republic would be best, but I think they were sold to Drake’s and I’m not sure if the brand will be retained

Wander Franco's young career seems to have stopped developing after a second minor comes out to accuse him of having sexual relationship. Sources are still pretty sketchy, so some time should be taken before passing judgement.

A prison team featuring Wander and ex-Pirate Felipe Vazquez, now serving a billion year sentence for having a relationship with a 13-year-old, would probably beat the A’s.

19 yo Jackson Holliday (Matt’s kid) started at low A this year, moved up to high A, then got called up a few weeks ago to AA. His slash line in 20 games in AA is .361/.419/.554. Seems legit! He also looks like he is 12 to me: https://www.milb.com/player/jackson-holliday-702616

Athletics drop another in St. Louis 6-2

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/8/15/23833944/athletics-cardinals-st-louis-butler

The Oakland Athletics continued their road trip in St Louis with the second game of this interleague series against the Cardinals tonight. The A’s dropped the first game yesterday but hope to rebound against a Cardinals team that surprised baseball by being sellers at the trade deadline and have underwhelmed their fans this year with a 53-66 record, landing them in last place in the National League Central Division.

Thirty-year-old righty Spenser Watkins made his first start for the A’s after being picked up from Houston on waivers August 8. His career record is 7-13 with a 5.85 ERA in thirty starts over 39 career appearances. He faced righty Dakota Hudson who is 3-0 in 9 appearances this year with a 4.31 ERA.

In the fourth inning of the San Francisco Giants game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night, Wade Meckler took a first-pitch fastball about one copy of Infinite Jest above the strike zone.

Home plate umpire Chad Whitson called it a strike.

Dodgers rally behind Bobby Miller, Ryan Yarbrough to beat Brewers

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/8/15/23833995/dodgers-rally-bobby-miller-ryan-yarbrough-brewers

Doing virtually all of its damage in the sixth inning, the Dodgers took care of business on Tuesday against Brewers, backing an outstanding outing by Bobby Miller in a 6-2 win in the series opener at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers’ rookie arm pitched the majority of his outing, trailing on the scoreboard. That is about the only negative thing one can say about Miller’s start on Tuesday.

Edwards Stadium is named after Col. George C. Edwards, who was born in 1852 in Spencer, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). He moved to the Bay Area when he was 10. He was the third student to ever register at the University of California. Thereafter, he was continuously connected to UCB - student, professor, professor emeritus until his death in 1930. The stadium was named after him two years later when it finished construction.

ACC presidents met again this morning. It's looking bleak for Cal and Furd https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/38198507/acc-florida-state-college-football-2023-conference-realignment

Sun Belt conference anyone?

With the new configuration Cal has a much better championship chance than going 4-8 with a 2-7 conference record like last season. Would we ever beat Utah again?

i am sure it will be discussed much more, but i read somewhere Stanford is still in the running for ACC by itself?

There are 11 full time members of the MWC. Seems logical to assume that a vote of 6 would dissolve conference. So can we do a PAC 4 plus MWC 6 composed of:

Cal

Stanford

Oregon St

Wazzu

SDSU

Boise

Fresno

UNLV

Nevada

Colo St

Expand full comment

Quite a come down from playing the LA schools, UW, Oregon, Utah and ASU.

Expand full comment

No kidding. This is what the best case for relegation looks like.

My take would be to add 8 MWC schools, if possible, not just 6 -

Air Force

Boise State

Colorado State

Fresno State

Nevada

San Diego State

San Jose State

UNLV

The greatest travel distance is probably Washington State to San Diego State. That's about as compact a grouping as you're going to find among West Coast FBS programs, even if its dominated by mid-majors.

Expand full comment

The key thing I can’t wrap my head around: why would anyone sign on with a conference led by the people who presided over its implosion? If I were a president of a MWC school, I’d not want to bet the farm on the pac4 administration

Expand full comment

That would be a huge barrier to gaining acceptance from those added (former MWC) schools.

It only makes sense if those same added schools can designate the new commissioner.

Indeed, but is that cake not already baked?
