Usually, I'd be in the use-wilderness-at-your-risk camp. Here, the risk is created not only by the elements of wilderness, but also by a permit system placing hordes of people in a bottle neck in the wilderness. I ponder whether NPS has a responsibility to mitigate the risk created by too many humans exiting the cables on half dome at the same time.

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s question of the day.

Bathroom tissue and toilet paper are identical. What’s the deal here?

Expand full comment

Charmin scalloped edges weren't even in my mind as part of the deal, but I like them!

Those were weird. But I love the Charmin TP

...and is there art to the deal?

At Costco, you can get a pack of 30 rolls for $23.49.

That's the deal. ;-)

Does W4C maintain a ranking of contributors who stimulate discussion? OD would seem to be climbing up that ladder!

Toilet paper is much more restricted, can be used only while on the toilet and disposed only in the toilet. Bathroom tissue is more versatile. It can be used in other areas of the bathroom, not just the toilet, but it is not recommended that you use it outside the bathroom.

Conversely, never flush facial tissue or so-called flushable wipes. They do not break up easily and you risk clogging your pipes.

Expand full comment

Agree about "flushable wipes"; not so with facial tissue. Facial tissue will break up in water when agitated by sufficient flow.

The deal is 12 rolls for the price of 10

Expand full comment

That's a good deal. Also available, 24 at a per roll price less than that of the 12 packs.

Here's a thought. Each unit within a pack is called a roll of toilet paper. The cardboard tube inside each one of those is called a toilet paper roll.

Athletics defeat Mets 7-6, win series

The Oakland Athletics faced off against the New York Mets today in the rubber match of their three-game series at Citi Field in Flushing, NY. Rookie righthander Mitch Spence took the mound against 35-year-old lefty Jose Quintana for the Mets.

So McCrazy, it just might work... (Giants beat the Braves 6-0)

To bunt would be questionable.

When Grant McCray laid the barrel of the bat out on the second pitch of his 2nd inning at-bat against Max Fried, the decision gave both Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow pause. Old heads, for sure, often bordering on lovably cantankerous, but they had a point. There are some rules that shouldn’t be broken, some strategies not questioned: bunting with the bases loaded is one of those. It’s rarely, if ever, a good idea. A squeeze play without two other runners on base works because it means an inevitable play at home requires a tag. The extra step for the defense complicates matters in what can be a rapid collision of runner and ball. Dribbling a baseball within arms reach of a catcher when all that is required for an out is a toe to the plate isn’t much of a weapon.

Late implosion leads to Dodgers' loss in Milwaukee

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/15/24221298/daniel-hudson-blown-lead-dodgers-brewers

It’s a tight rope to walk when you defend a one-run lead for multiple innings, and Daniel Hudson’s struggles cost the Dodgers a shot at a win, dropping Thursday’s series finale 6-4 to the Brewers.

Delivering yet another game of close margins, Hudson came in to defend the lead in the eighth versus the top of the order and allowed three runs as the first four hitters reached safely.

Curious what others recommend for watching Cal football. Until last season, I had Pac-12 through Comcast. Need to nail down an option before UC Davis game.

Either YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV. They will carry all of the stations you need.

(The only thing to watch out for is if you happen to live in an area where they aren't carrying your local CW affiliate, because some ACC games will be on there. In most large markets like the Bay Area this isn't an issue, but make sure.)

Expand full comment

I have Xfinity and gave my kids a login so they can use it to watch stuff from where they live. I believe I'll still have ACC network through ESPN. I think there are some games that require ESPN+, but maybe not the conference games?

Expand full comment

I also have ACC network through the Xfiniti- can't recall if via sports package or just higher tier plan. My Xfiniti signin will allow me to watch ACCNx via ESPN+, which hopefully will work for the upcoming Davis game...

Expand full comment

You don't need ESPN+ to watch ACC games. The streaming-only options will be through ACCNx, which you get access to if you have ACC Network on your TV plan.

Expand full comment

That works. I thought I had tried to watch some UNC BB games that I had to have ESPN+. But I could watch most of them.

Expand full comment

I think the only scenarios where we might need ESPN+ is if Cal is playing on the road and that team's conference has its games sent to ESPN+. This wouldn't happen for leagues with their own conference networks (like the B1G or SEC), but could conceivably happen for a road game at the Big 12 or a G5 conference. For example, Virginia Tech plays at Old Dominion this season (it's an in-state rivalry game) and that game will be on ESPN+ because it's under the Sun Belt TV contract.

Seems unlikely that Cal would be caught up in this very often, but if they are then I'd recommend just paying for one month of ESPN+ and then canceling. (Note that Mountain West games would never be on ESPN+ because they don't have a contract with ESPN. Probably the worst we could get with a road game there would be a game on TruTV.)

Check out YouTube TV. I believe they carry ACC Network as it is run by ESPN.
