Post away, my Pretties. I am playing hooky at the beach today and tomorrow.

Like the last time I played midweek hooky on Wrightsville Beach - the beach is almost exclusively college-aged women and retirees.

Paul Blackburn, Zack Gelof lead A’s over Cardinals 8-0

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/8/16/23835253/athletics-vs-cardinals-recap-paul-blackburn-zack-gelof

The Oakland Athletics jumped out to an early lead and never looked back Wednesday night with an 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Zack Gelof has been a catalyst for the A’s offense of late and he got things started Wednesday night with a double and then stole third base. Carlos Perez brought him home with a single to center to put the A’s in front 1-0.

Taking on water

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/8/16/23835220/mlb-scores-giants-rays-8-16-2023-recap-taking-on-water

12 hours after putting up 7 runs on 8 hits in the last three innings of yesterday’s 7-0 win, the San Francisco Giants returned to Oracle Park for their rubber match against the Tampa Bay Rays feeling like the wind had to be in their favor. A months long doldrums of minor breezes and luffing sails, Tuesday’s outburst just had to signal a change in the team’s weather.

It didn’t, and you know it’s a tough day when the most exciting thing on the field happened at your expense.

Dodgers cruise to beat Brewers, win 10th straight game

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/8/16/23835400/freddie-freeman-mookie-betts-dodgers-10-straight-wins-brewers

The Dodgers secured another series win with a 7-1 win over the Brewers on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, extending their perfect week and a half to 10 straight wins.

Clayton Kershaw wasn’t brilliant, but in typical Kershaw fashion pitched what for most starters out there would be a pretty good outing, holding the Brewers to a single run across five innings.

Dodgers first baseman and MVP candidate Freddie Freeman was hitless in three straight games before this Wednesday’s matchup against the Brew Crew. Stuff like that is common within the season, and even the month of most big leaguers, but for Freeman these days, it felt like a major slump. And being the stud that he is, Freeman made up for all of it with one big day.

Have you read David Gann’s The Wager? Great book and quite a page turner - I read most of it on a flight earlier this summer. Would recommend!

Not sure what you like to read, but my favorite books so far this year are:

Demon Copperhead -- Barbara Kingsolver

Deion Sanders continues to be a great leader who definitely isn't cultivating a locker room primed for a mid-season implosion

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/38206482/colorado-coach-deion-sanders-admonishes-players-walking-away-fight-practice

"I seen two of you walking off, over there, and you've got a key teammate fighting," Sanders groused. "Where they do that at? Where they do that at?"

Not here, his players replied.

"If one fights, we all fight," Sanders fumed. "You understand that? I don't want to see you all walking off when somebody's fighting. Never again!"

Driving over the speed limit

Expand full comment
author

I'm typically at 10% more than the posted limit. Since I drive a red WRX, I'm well aware that if anyone is getting pulled over, it will be me. So I drive a little more conservatively (and in 8 years of owning this car, I've never been pulled over)

Expand full comment

we have black WRX. not red, but seems quite distinctive as cars go.

i should say it is my daughter's car that i get to borrow when she is away at UW. claims they will take it w/ them next summer.

still, super fun car to drive. HAGs no 1 has the STI

Obviously, my speed is contextual. But I will generally be 10 over the limit. Except in Virginia and Georgia, where I drive the posted speed because cops are so ticket-happy there

I have a hard cap on 5-over in VA. There's no way I'm getting hit with a misdemeanor for doing 80+ on one of their interstates

I solve this problem by staying on or within the beltway in Virginia

On residential roads, 1-2MPH over if at all.

On the freeway, I regularly go 70, and will go faster if the flow of traffic is faster. I am typically in one of the two left lanes.

On I-5 through the central valley, I will go as fast as seems reasonable, which occasionally starts with a 9 if I find a like-minded driver who wants to basically caravan and take turns with who's in front.

Expand full comment

Here? Freeway, it drives me nuts how fucking slow most drivers are on curves - you start at 75 STAY at 75!!!

The old M5 was good enough, the newer one is crazy fast. Usual 19+ speed limit, never try to go over 20.

Expand full comment

On the freeway I'm usually going at least the flow of traffic in the 2 left lanes, so just depends on what the flow is. If a group wants to go 80+ I'll tag along. Try not to be the first or the last in the group.

In the residential roads, usually not much more than 5 over. Especially when I drive past the well known speed trap locations.

Expand full comment

On the freeways, I usually set my cruise control to 75 and make sure that there is someone on the road that still wants to pass me. To my way of thinking, as long as I stay inconspicuous, I should be OK.

Expand full comment

I've become more conservative and cautious in my driving as I've gotten older. In residential areas, I often find I'm under the speed limit, although that's not a hard and fast rule. I have been as much as 5 mph over on occasion.

On the freeway or highways, I don't usually drop below the posted speed limit and am typically up to 5 mph over. I find myself in one of the two right hand lanes more often than not.

Expand full comment

Residential roads - at the limit.

Non residential non highway roads - typically no more than 5 mph over

Highways - generally not more than 75 (conditions permitting), with the exception of I’m driving by myself on the NY Thruway in which case I’m going 80 to keep with the flow of traffic

Expand full comment

On highways most places: 5-9 mph over.

On SoCal freeways: 80 mph always so I don’t get run off the road.

Seems like when one can speed in LA, anything under 80 on the highway is ignored by CHP. And once south of Camp Pendleton when driving to San Diego it seems like the slowest cars are doing 75 and under 90 is ignored.

City streets in LA, anything under 10 over seems to be ignored as well.

on city streets i am probably 5-10 mph over with the exception of congested areas.

on the freeways i am much closer to the speed limit these days because there really isnt anywhere to go fast in NYC area.

on open roads and long trips i try to stay around 75 mph
