lately i have been getting an espresso martini at the Delta lounge. one of the bartenders tipped me off to this idea that if i bring them a fresh espresso from the coffee machine, it makes a better espresso martini than their standard one.
I'm going to be in Ireland and (mostly) offline from the 21st through the 28th. Not that you had anything stopping you from posting now, but please keep the home fires alight by posting early and often.
It's a clockwise driving trip with just me and my daughter around the coast Dublin/Wexford/Cork/Dingle/Galway/ cut through the middle of Ireland back to Dublin where my wife will make a surprise appearance at the end for dinner.
Dublin is basically a generic Euro city. There are bright spots but its nothing special. If you go south to Wexford, stop at Glendalough...absolutely spectacular scenery and short hiking options. Havent done the far south coast but have heard Kinsale is a great little town. The Ring of Kerry is a wonderful drive if you like scenic drives on tiny roads. Killarney is cool, a bit touristy but lots to do there and the Gap of Dunloe is nearby. Dingle itself is also quite cool. The town is touristy, I was more fond of Castlegregory in some ways but the drive around the peninsula and villages like Dunquin is awesome. Lots of famine related sites there...if you're feeling frisky, the Blasket isles are off the Dingle coast. Total blast from the past. Driving north to County Clare I would skip the Cliffs of Moher... they are amazing but have gotten crazy with the tourist stuff. You can see almost identical views all down that section of coast so do a little research to see if you can skip the crowds. The village of Doolin is the hub of traditional Irish music. Basically the whole village is set up as pubs and hotels so if you're into the pub and singing Irish peeps, thats ground zero...which is not to say you wont find something in any town you do to but Doolin is famous famous. You'll hit Galway not far from there. If you're driving back to Dublin via the M6 from Galway, there isn't much to see. The oldest pub in the world in is Athlone (900AD or something?) but not much else through the central part of the country on the main road. Try to stay in B&Bs, they are genuinely great there... there's the 5 minute version of Ireland. Genuinely love that place. If you are thinking of anything specific, let me know and I'll give you feedback if I have been.
Republican-led House Oversight Committee issues 291-page impeachment investigation against Biden for something. The wording is arguable whether the report actually recommends impeachment, but it's a moot point since the GOP doesn't have the votes - so this will probably end the whole thing.
Ipsos/BAC/WaPo poll comes out and Harris that shows a 7 point swing away from Trump, including building a four point lead in battleground states. The biggest swings come from young women (+23), middle class of 50k-100k earners (+15), and Independents (+15). I am mildly surprised at how broad the swing support is, perhaps not indicating how strong she is but how weak Biden was.
Because the media insists on framing it in terms of a comparison between Harris and Biden and there is an inherent unspoken assumption that women are weaker politicians. Therefore, if Harris is showing strength, Biden must have been really weak.
I'd also venture to guess that most of the journos writing about the election are men and their fragile egos haven't quite re-framed this campaign in a way that's outside of the Boomer narrative. This failure to re-frame is a disservice not only to Kamala Harris, but to the American electorate.
Hillary Clinton, even though the Electoral College went against her, did a huge service to this nation by being the first woman to be a major party nominee, largely freeing Kamala Harris from having to answer inane questions about being the first woman to be a major party nominee or even breaking the glass ceiling that is the presidency. Because of Hillary Clinton, America is closer to having a woman as POTUS and there's also enthusiasm that it could be Kamala Harris. That's no small thing.
America has needed a generational change for a long time now. We may be getting what we need, even as we must fight off the dying vestiges of a generation that refuses to cede power quietly, respectfully, or gracefully. I hoped and prayed that 2008 was that election. 2016 proved otherwise. Right now, all I have is faith that in 78 days this country will have started to turn the page...again.

I'd like to think that fewer than 1 in 13 voters was like "yeah, I hate Trump but I can't vote for Biden and I don't care about the consequences". But my experience has proven otherwise and I have met several people who were exactly that. You try to reason with their insane logic but they they don't care because they stand by how they feel.

Kershaw faced just two batters over the minimum in his six innings, allowing only four singles and a walk. One runner was caught stealing and two more were erased on double plays, the latter part of an astounding 10 groundouts that helped Kershaw maintain efficiency in his fifth start back off the injured list.
49ers beat Saints 16-10 in a preseason game where we learn who their 3rd and 4th stringers are and are reminded that we already know that Jacob Cowing is pretty good
I was at the second lowest game. Roger Theder had a new OC Mouse Davis. Davis had previously set the world on fire at Portland State with offensive yards that made Run-and-Shoot famous. Run-and-shoot needed quick, nimble, speedy guys who could catch short passes from an accurate thrower. Cal did have that via J Torchio, John Tuggle, and Carl Montgomery. Davis only lasted 7 games before getting canned, one of those being the infamous loss to San Jose State where Cal had 3 first downs via rushing. While Cal had previously lost to Texas A&M by 1, @#6 Georgia by only 14, and beaten a pretty bad Arizona team on the road by 1, the loss to SJSU made it very obvious it was going to be a bad year and it was. (2-9). Cal only got 2 first downs that game and SJSU only had one despite having Gerald Willhite who had the 16th most rushing yards in Division 1 football that year (1,154). Mouse Davis went to the pros before returning to the college ranks via Hawaii, where he was pretty successful.
Hold on there. Let's not forget that Gale Gilbert suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the 2nd quarter of the season opener vs. aTm on the newly installed AstroGarbage at Cal Memorial.
The Run-and-Shoot worked. Cal led, 28-14 at halftime. And it probably would have been a 35-14 or 42-14 lead except Gilbert was swarmed from both sides and driven into the turf. It was obviously bad and killed the 1981 season right then and there. Torchio, gawd bless him, was not a gifted QB and he struggled.
Cal scored nothing more the rest of the way in that game and aTm got a 2-pt. conversion on their last TD to win.
I have a permanent scar on my right forearm from being driven into that same AstroGarbage in blocking practice. That surface was like falling onto the coarse side of a box cheese grater.

The one that used to be across from Pac Bell Park was just as good as the one on Gilman. I used to park at the McDonalds up the block on the corner and stop at this one when doing early morning SFO dropoffs.
The one on Monument in Concord near Costco is not good.
The one on San Pablo in Albany is fine, but not as good as the one on Gilman.
I've been going to the one on Gilman since they opened around 96. I've seen their kids grow up over the years. Every so often the kids show up to help out. Even after being in Ky for 14 years, and periodically go when we visited Ca, they still know me. Truly a family run operation.
Stan's Donuts in Santa Clara (Homestead Rd., ~ 1 mile from Santa Clara Kaiser). Since 1959. Cash only. Best glazed donuts EVER, especially when they're still warm (which is often since they have to keep making them in order to keep up with demand). More substantial then a Krispy Creme, but not a cake donut. Definitely a yeast dough, soft and flavorful. I've been known to pick up a dozen or two to take with me to the Farm for Big Game. Easily the best donut I've ever had.

Maybe, it's because old fashioned donuts are a subset of cake donuts. That's a guess, BTW. It also could be that old fashioned donuts exist on the East Coast but they aren't called that.
In the southeast, I see donuts in the shape of west coast Old Fashioned donuts, but instead called Sour Cream Cake Donuts. In the SE typically have only seen them glazed, hardly ever plain, and very rare to have the think chocolate covered. They are also more sweet and more moist than the Old Fashioned of the west coast, lacking the different outer/inner texture I am more used to from Old Fashioned. I get tempted by the east coast version sometimes, but it never quite meets my craving of Old Fashioned donuts I miss from CA. There is probably some other donut swap that those who grew up on the East coast miss in CA...
The varying textures of a West Coast old fashioned donut is an attraction to me. For some reason, it wasn't until I went to Santa Cruz that I really found an affinity for old fashioned donuts at Ferrell's Donuts. They also make a buttermilk bar in the old fashioned style that is wonderful. You can get a buttermilk bar plain, glazed, maple glazed, and chocolate dipped. Or at least you could right up to the early 2000s.

This is true. You'll find Sour Cream donuts, which are different than traditional Old Fashioned made with buttermilk - which is very ironic given this is the land of buttermilk everything.
I am no stranger to buttermilk; my mother introduced me at a young age, and I like it fine in donuts, pancakes, used in other baking and even a tall cold glass of it from time to time. Mrs Slug cannot understand why I would actually want to drink buttermilk. I like its tangy goodness. What can I say?
I had a coworker from Minnesota (I think) that wondered why west coasters called them old fashioned. She called them donuts (or maybe it was doughnuts) and they didn't have cake donuts.
Well, cake donuts are less about a name and more about using a recipe that includes baking powder instead of yeast according to multiple websites.
Not sure why West Coasters would call them old fashioned donuts except that most West Coasters came from somewhere else in the US and that somewhere else may be the East Coast, which is where cake donuts may have originated.
Baker's Dozen - it's a Cambodian-American family-owned place that is kicking ass by doing "standard" donuts in a run-down out-of-the-way strip mall with a 10 minute line with way better than the stunt donuts like Voodoo, Duck, or Krispy Kreme. It is a convenience for *most* people to be able to use a credit card or a debit card to pay for a hot dog, soda, beer, or whatever at a sports event.
But it's also discriminatory to *require* customers to use a cashless system to pay for goods and services when doing so may be a burden they are unable to meet. Also, the bills issued by the US Treasury have this printed on them - THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE
If that is true, then cashless systems should be, ipso facto, illegal.
It is illegal. But many industries have made some form of ecommerce capability (often only select ones) mandatory, and many places and things have also made a smart phone mandatory. And with little, and no effective, push back. It is where we are, and where we are headed.
Last time I went to a Nats game I decided on the spur of the moment and wasn’t carrying a phone. Got to the ticket booth and they could only issue a ticket to the MLB app. A nearby guy heard my dilemma and let them send the ticket to him and he scanned me in. Got inside and the only way to order food or drink was to use a QR code. On principle, the last game I went to.
On the one hand, if you're already at the game, I think you're unlikely to be "unbanked" or otherwise unable to pay, but on the other hand, as a matter of principle, people should be able to pay with cash if they want.
One other thought occurs to me: if a vendor were to lose their POS terminal connection, they couldn't make sales with credit cards or debit cards. Cash would the only available option in that scenario.
Good points. But I'd also like to think that just because someone is unbanked doesn't mean they are less worthy of consideration in this or any other economy. Cashless, while convenient, ultimately disenfranchises the poorest among us.

The Run-and-Shoot worked. Cal led, 28-14 at halftime. And it probably would have been a 35-14 or 42-14 lead except Gilbert was swarmed from both sides and driven into the turf. It was obviously bad and killed the 1981 season right then and there. Torchio, gawd bless him, was not a gifted QB and he struggled.
Cal scored nothing more the rest of the way in that game and aTm got a 2-pt. conversion on their last TD to win.

The one that used to be across from Pac Bell Park was just as good as the one on Gilman. I used to park at the McDonalds up the block on the corner and stop at this one when doing early morning SFO dropoffs.
The one on Monument in Concord near Costco is not good.
The one on San Pablo in Albany is fine, but not as good as the one on Gilman.
I've been going to the one on Gilman since they opened around 96. I've seen their kids grow up over the years. Every so often the kids show up to help out. Even after being in Ky for 14 years, and periodically go when we visited Ca, they still know me. Truly a family run operation.
Stan's Donuts in Santa Clara (Homestead Rd., ~ 1 mile from Santa Clara Kaiser). Since 1959. Cash only. Best glazed donuts EVER, especially when they're still warm (which is often since they have to keep making them in order to keep up with demand). More substantial then a Krispy Creme, but not a cake donut. Definitely a yeast dough, soft and flavorful. I've been known to pick up a dozen or two to take with me to the Farm for Big Game. Easily the best donut I've ever had.

Johnny's Donuts in Lafayette has good sugar raised and chocolate old fashioned donuts.
But by far, the best, is Happy Donuts on Gilman. Their devils food cake donuts are the best anywhere.

Maybe, it's because old fashioned donuts are a subset of cake donuts. That's a guess, BTW. It also could be that old fashioned donuts exist on the East Coast but they aren't called that.
In the southeast, I see donuts in the shape of west coast Old Fashioned donuts, but instead called Sour Cream Cake Donuts. In the SE typically have only seen them glazed, hardly ever plain, and very rare to have the think chocolate covered. They are also more sweet and more moist than the Old Fashioned of the west coast, lacking the different outer/inner texture I am more used to from Old Fashioned. I get tempted by the east coast version sometimes, but it never quite meets my craving of Old Fashioned donuts I miss from CA. There is probably some other donut swap that those who grew up on the East coast miss in CA...
The varying textures of a West Coast old fashioned donut is an attraction to me. For some reason, it wasn't until I went to Santa Cruz that I really found an affinity for old fashioned donuts at Ferrell's Donuts. They also make a buttermilk bar in the old fashioned style that is wonderful. You can get a buttermilk bar plain, glazed, maple glazed, and chocolate dipped. Or at least you could right up to the early 2000s.

This is true. You'll find Sour Cream donuts, which are different than traditional Old Fashioned made with buttermilk - which is very ironic given this is the land of buttermilk everything.
I am no stranger to buttermilk; my mother introduced me at a young age, and I like it fine in donuts, pancakes, used in other baking and even a tall cold glass of it from time to time. Mrs Slug cannot understand why I would actually want to drink buttermilk. I like its tangy goodness. What can I say?
I had a coworker from Minnesota (I think) that wondered why west coasters called them old fashioned. She called them donuts (or maybe it was doughnuts) and they didn't have cake donuts.
Well, cake donuts are less about a name and more about using a recipe that includes baking powder instead of yeast according to multiple websites.
Not sure why West Coasters would call them old fashioned donuts except that most West Coasters came from somewhere else in the US and that somewhere else may be the East Coast, which is where cake donuts may have originated.
That's my best guess.
Baker's Dozen - it's a Cambodian-American family-owned place that is kicking ass by doing "standard" donuts in a run-down out-of-the-way strip mall with a 10 minute line with way better than the stunt donuts like Voodoo, Duck, or Krispy Kreme. It is a convenience for *most* people to be able to use a credit card or a debit card to pay for a hot dog, soda, beer, or whatever at a sports event.
But it's also discriminatory to *require* customers to use a cashless system to pay for goods and services when doing so may be a burden they are unable to meet. Also, the bills issued by the US Treasury have this printed on them - THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE
If that is true, then cashless systems should be, ipso facto, illegal.
It is illegal. But many industries have made some form of ecommerce capability (often only select ones) mandatory, and many places and things have also made a smart phone mandatory. And with little, and no effective, push back. It is where we are, and where we are headed.
Last time I went to a Nats game I decided on the spur of the moment and wasn’t carrying a phone. Got to the ticket booth and they could only issue a ticket to the MLB app. A nearby guy heard my dilemma and let them send the ticket to him and he scanned me in. Got inside and the only way to order food or drink was to use a QR code. On principle, the last game I went to.
On the one hand, if you're already at the game, I think you're unlikely to be "unbanked" or otherwise unable to pay, but on the other hand, as a matter of principle, people should be able to pay with cash if they want.
One other thought occurs to me: if a vendor were to lose their POS terminal connection, they couldn't make sales with credit cards or debit cards. Cash would the only available option in that scenario.

Good points. But I'd also like to think that just because someone is unbanked doesn't mean they are less worthy of consideration in this or any other economy. Cashless, while convenient, ultimately disenfranchises the poorest among us.
