Russia starts adopting the children it kidnapped from Mariupol. Straight-up genocide.

Just watched the season 2 finale of Only Murders in the Building. Wow! That was a killer reveal and then setup for season 3.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I just watched season 1 episode 1. Love it so far.

Terence's avatar

Such a funny finale! An uneven season but the highs were super high!

Cugel's avatar

It's ALL enjoyable.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Finished A League of Their Own (Amazon Prime). Maybe it is knowing more what to expect but also because they finally got to more baseball, I enjoyed the second half of first season a lot more.

By the way, one of the best AAGPBL exhibit is supposedly in South Bend, Indiana at the local museum for anyone who might be making the trip to Notre Dame (I still got to figure that out). South Bend Blue Sox is the other team that lasted for the duration of the AAGPBL along side the Rockford Peaches.

I've seen a couple interviews recently with Maybelle Blair and saw she threw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium the other day. She's 95 and played for Peoria back in 1948. She is really smart about baseball and has a quick wit. And she came out as gay at an event

promoting the show earlier this year.

I wonder if there will ever be a switch to women playing baseball as opposed to softball. Not that it really matters, it just always struck me as weird that a separate version existed for women

Watched Colosseum which I DVR'd on Sunday night. Story of the physician Galen whose work remained influential until the end of the 18th century.

House of the Dragon...maybe a little more gore, a little less eye candy...but still interesting in terms of the character introduction. A solid start...

Berkelium97's avatar

I'm encouraged by the decent reviews so far, but I think I'll wait a few more episodes before I decide if I'll watch. I guess I'm still bitter about how GoT ended

Ruey Yen's avatar

It was kind of promising but the entire first episode took place in one city. I don't know (though the info is probably already online) if that's going to be the case for the entire series since having too many plot-lines were kind of both the draw and the downfall of GoT.

sycasey's avatar

Yeah, I know that GoT seasons also tended to start slowly before ramping up, but then you look back to the first episode of GoT:

1. White Walkers

2. King's Hand dies, must be replaced

3. Questions about who killed him

4. Stark-Lannister marriage proposed

5. Targaryens overseas, plotting an invasion

6. Incest!

7. Guy pushes a kid out a window!

That's a lot of intrigue. HotD doesn't have nearly that much going on. But this is also a show that can afford to assume people are interested, rather than trying to grab their interest.

Cugel's avatar

Only in the last seasons, when they had no books to refer to, then it sucked.

Cugel's avatar

It was ok, but I kinda hated the overuse of GFI instead of real cinema, real places, kinda a waste in my book.

Thanks to Terence, the Sushi place in the United Terminal at Narita.

Justbear's avatar

In Japan, airports have nice restaurants before the security. At Narita and Haneda, there are many restaurants where you can eat with friends and family before going thru the security. All regional airports have a restaurant(s) before security and none after security. It is nice because the security is fast but I want more stuff inside.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The sushi place is after security. I went there between flights from ORD to TPE. Forgot which gates it's between but I think in the 30s or 40s.

Justbear's avatar

Yeah I think there's only one sushi place in each terminal. There's one near United gates in the 30-40s range in Terminal 1. I always recommend that place whenever someone asks me where to have good sushi at Narita because that's the only one there lol.

MoriBear's avatar

the post-security ones seemed to all closed last month. maybe we were "early", but it was like 1pm. shoulda been open. half the pre-security shops were closed also. that's what happen when you close off your country to 99% of foreign tourism

Justbear's avatar

Yeah that's what I heard. I still haven't gone yet but my father went 3 times already this summer. He said it was a bit better a couple of weeks ago on his last trip, a few more stores were open compared to July.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

SLC .. if you have even a 90 min layover, you have enough time to head to the Red Iguana a few miles from the airport and get some Killer Mexican food!

it helps to have Clear, pre-check, and go to the Red Iguana at off-peak times as well.

Terence's avatar

I have been pounding this drum for over a decade - Sushi Kyotatsu in Narita Terminal 1 between gates 22 and 24 is probably a top 10% level sushi place in Japan itself, nevermind an airport.

Pappadeux at Houston Bush Intercontinental for chain restaurant Cajun

Salt Lick (the Austin area barbecue) is in Terminal A at DFW

I don't know if "good" is the word I would use, but I do like the cheeseburger and chili sub at Ben's Chili Bowl at DCA. It would be perfectly fine without the chili but that extra indigestion carries me through early evening flights to the west coast.

O'Hare seems to have good places to eat including a steakhouse which is a very Chicago thing.

Berkelium97's avatar

I had a decent Chicago-style hot dog there a couple times. O'Hare had better have good food because every time I have a stopover there some calamity strikes and my flight gets delayed/cancelled.

Justbear's avatar

I've spent many hours in Chicago because of delays and it's disappointing that they don't have any lounges I can access with Amex Plat or Priority Pass even though it's a major airport.

Usually I end up paying for United Club and kill time there. There aren't any good restaurants in Concourse C.

O.Overall's avatar

It is kind of crazy that it is a major hub since the weather is so terrible, but it is well located I suppose

SGBear's avatar

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 3 and I were sitting at the light at one of the roads from the freeway offramp by Safeway and saw an SUV come down the middle of the road being chased by a highway patrol, turn right against the red, go up one block, make a U turn coming back towards us, turn left to go back up the road he came from with another cop coming towards him. I assume he got off the freeway and then tried to get back on. But there isn't an onramp there. Not sure how far he got. You only see this in cities with offramps.

I'm obviously neglecting the recent carjack that occurred in a neighboring town and ended about half a mile from where I live.

John Solomon - Trump's liaison to the National Archives (NARA) - released the letter from NARA. I'm no lawyer, but Trump's filing in Florida seems bizarre. There are parts that seem dictated from Trump himself. They are asking for relief of things that happened a LONG time ago. The filing does not refute any of the alleged issues that he has violated. And it's expository rather than being a legal filing that is actionable by the court.

I'm waiting for it for my second booster.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Another work trip to Miami in Dec so maybe I'll get the BA5 one before then, if they'll let me.

DC Trojan's avatar

I got my second booster so early (at my doctor's request) that if they approve a third, I'll be eligible in early October, in which case I'm going for one of the BA5 ones. Variety is the spice of life etc.

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno exploring possible sale of team

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34447735/los-angeles-angels-owner-arte-moreno-exploring-possible-sale-team

Arte Moreno is exploring the possibility of selling the Los Angeles Angels after two decades of ownership, it was announced Tuesday.

The Angels said they have "initiated a formal process to evaluate strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the team," and have retained Galatioto Sports Partners as financial advisors in the process.

"Although this difficult decision was entirely our choice and deserved a great deal of thoughtful consideration, my family and I have ultimately come to the conclusion that now is the time," Moreno said in a statement. "Throughout this process, we will continue to run the franchise in the best interest of our fans, employees, players and business partners."

Dodgers fall flat against Eric Lauer in Brewers opener

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/22/23317620/dodgers-no-offense-eric-lauer-nemesis-brewers

Monday saw yet another pitching-heavy game between the Dodgers and Brewers at Dodger Stadium, and the road team scored all the runs in the opener, which gave Milwaukee its third win over Los Angeles in seven days, a 4-0 victory.

For the second time in six days, the Dodgers had trouble against Eric Lauer, but it’s not like this is anything new. He did not permit the Dodgers a run on Monday, the ninth time in eleven career starts against them he allowed two or fewer runs. That’s the recipe for a 2.37 ERA against Los Angeles, and now a 7-1 record.

Last Wednesday in Milwaukee was a rarity in that the Dodgers actually beat Lauer, even though he only allowed two solo home runs in seven innings. If there was a silver lining on Monday, it’s that Lauer needed 98 pitches to get through five innings, scattering five singles and two walks.

It's eleven days until the first home football game and both of the following sentences are true for me:

I'm really excited to go back to Memorial Stadium.

My level of excitement for Cal football hasn't been this low in a long time.

Anyone else feel similarly?

Berkelium97's avatar

It was fun beating up teams like UW in low-scoring rockfights in the first few years of the Wilcox Era, but I'm getting tired of watching a top-3 (in conference) defense get held back by an offense that ranges from mediocre to unwatchable. My modest level of excitement reflects my lack of optimism that the offense will accomplish anything more than a couple long scoring drives while sputtering aimlessly for the rest of the game.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The lack of big plays, spotty special teams and a consistent parade of 3 & outs are maddening...the Bears leave a lot of W's on the field.

Not bowling last year with a solid D and an offense chock full of veteran starters is serious cause for concern...it gets coaches fired, not extended. Sigh.

sycasey's avatar

The COVID years did a lot to dampen excitement around the program. We'll see if that's fixable with a more "normal" season.

goldenone's avatar

I agree. It seems like promise of the team has faded since COVID started. Need to get the mojo back also field a functional offense.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Yeah I'd be a lot more excited if there was reason to be confident about the offense. Also it would be nice to think we could exceed the seven win mark. The whole bullshit about the LA schools leaving and the uncertain future don't help either. That said, look forward to being in Strawberry Canyon, seeing old friends, Oski, the band etc.
