My wife once felt lightheaded and dizzy. The symptoms lasted for more than an hour. We took her to ER. After getting an IV and released a few hours letter, the diagnosis was "weakness." I can't think of a less flattering diagnosis and to this day, I like to tease her about it.

Finished 2nd season of Lincoln Lawyer this week, good show, not great, but fun.

Started Ahsoka - first episode was quite good, looking forward to more.

I guess the 4th episode of 3rd season of Dark Winds - a sort of fun, not intense episode, but we quite enjoy in general.

It was noted yesterday that Stephen Strasburg plans to announce his retirement next month. Fourteen Ks in his first game. I remember they carried the radio feed of some of his minor league games before he was called up. Unfortunately had health issues most of his career. After being World Series MVP he signed for 7 years, $245 million. Since then he's pitched 31 innings. His contract is not insured.

Slugging Shea takes A’s to the moon

The Oakland Athletics beat out the Chicago White Sox in a full-game slugfest. Eight homers were hit, and fortunately, the A’s were responsible for five of them.

It wasn’t always nice for the green and gold though. The game started off in the bottom of the 1st with Andrew Benintendi performing some loud lefty-on-lefty action. On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, the outfielder hit a solo homer over the right field fence off A’s starter Ken Waldichuk to give the Sox a quick 1-0 lead.

Mookie Betts sets fire to the rain in Dodgers win over Guardians

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/8/24/23844454/mookie-betts-five-hits-dodgers-guardians-rain-suspended

It took nearly 21 hours from start to finish, but the Dodgers finally got their first win of the series against the Guardians, beating Cleveland 6-1 at Progressive Field in a game that began on Wednesday night and ended on Thursday but featured Mookie Betts throughout.

Just like in the first game of the series on Tuesday, the Dodgers struck in the top of the first. Four hits from the first six batters against Xzavion Curry plated three runs, including a two-out, two-run double by Kiké Hernández.

Hernández doubled twice in the second game on Thursday, on his 32nd birthday. He then added a home run in the top of the ninth inning, the fifth game in his career with three extra-base hits, including the postseason.

[MSOC] Cal Ties No. 10 UNCG 1-1 In Season Opener

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/24/mens-soccer-cal-ties-no-10-uncg-1-1-in-season-opener.aspx

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The California men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 1-1 draw Thursday night on the road at No. 10 North Carolina Greensboro. Despite two long weather delays and a Spartan goal in the opening minutes, the Golden Bears fought tooth and nail to tie one of the top teams in the country on its own turf.

"The was the wildest game I've ever been a part of, with all the stops and starts," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "I'm super proud with the group. It's just the first game, but to grind out a result given the circumstances shows the strength of our character, and hopefully it'll help us to find a way to grind out wins in games to come. The guys understand that's a good result on the road."

[T&F] WORLD CHAMPION!

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/24/track-field-world-champion.aspx

BUDAPEST, Hungary – As Camryn Rogers' final throw soared through the air, the 24-year-old Canadian finally let herself celebrate as she bounced on her toes and pumped her arms in the air with a huge grin.

It didn't matter how far the hammer went. The competition was over, and Rogers had already won.

After the weight landed, Rogers clasped her hands over her mouth and walked over to the waiting arms of bronze medalist DeAnna Price, who lifted her entirely off the ground, before clasping a tearful Anna Purchase – her former Golden Bear teammate – in a tight, joyful embrace. It was both a triumph for Team Canada, which now has two hammer titles at the World Athletics Championships (fellow British Columbia native Ethan Katzberg won on the men's side), and for California track & field as Rogers became the program's first champion at this level. Rogers is also just the second Canadian woman ever to win any world title, and the first since Perdita Felicien's 100m hurdles victory in 2003.

[FB] Sam Jackson V Named Cal Starting Quarterback

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/24/football-sam-jackson-v-named-cal-starting-quarterback.aspx

BERKELEY – Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox announced Thursday that Sam Jackson V will be the starting quarterback for the Golden Bears' 2023 season-opener at North Texas on Sept. 2. Jackson, a transfer from TCU in his first season at Cal, had been in a three-way competition for the team's starting signal-caller position in training camp along with Ben Finley and Fernando Mendoza.

"We had an intense three-way quarterback competition during training camp," Wilcox said. "All three did a great job, and I have a great deal of confidence in all of them. But Sam began to separate himself recently. He is a dynamic athlete who can succeed both in the passing game and by making defenses account for his outstanding running ability. When your quarterback does both of those things well, it can be challenging for the defense. I'm excited to see what he does with this opportunity."

Expand full comment

Not sure why but I was really excited that Jackson won the starting job. Don't like his chances of winning the Heisman with his teammate, Jayden Ott, as competition.

Yes, hoops. I primarily played baseball but did go for 30 as a PG with Newellbany in 8th grade at Orinda Intermediate School...hung them up in hoops soon after, because, hey, that was the best it was ever gonna get...plus I was soooo tiny ;-)

I was the 2nd best player on the Varsity baseball team my SR year, so instead of winning the MVP award (which went to our catcher), I was awarded the Most Inspirational Player award. This was ironic because I was ejected twice that year, once for throwing the bat after a lengthy AB with the bases loaded late in the game against future Cal 2B Ivan Lewis at St. Mary's HS (Berkeley). Normally though I was a pretty good teammate.
