It's the start of college football Week 1 games. Interesting games include:

#25 Boise State (-5.5) @ South Florida on ESPN @ 5:30 pm Eastern / 2:30 pm Pacific

ECU @ NC State (-13.5) ACC Network 7 pm/4 pm

Elon @ Duk e(-34.5) on ESPN plus and ACC Extra @ 7:30 pm / 4:30 pm

Buffalo @ Minnesota (-17.5) on FS1 @ 8pm/5pm

Stony Brook @ SDSU (-18.5)

The fact that FCS level Stony Brook - who lost their stud QB to graduation and has two guys in the wings that have played but sucked tremendously when they went 0-10 in 2023 - are only 18.5 underdogs speaks volumes to how bad SDSU might be.

DeVito out. Claimed off waivers by Pats. New England has a strong Italian-American community too, so he should pick up some endorsements.

Tanner Goes the Distance in Complete Game Victory (Ballers beat the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers, 14-3)

https://www.oaklandballers.com/sports/bsb/2025/releases/202508285zd44s

MARYSVILLE, Calif. -- As the night wore on, I kept checking Gabe Tanner's pitch count. He needed just three pitches to get to the first two outs of the game, and three more to complete a six-pitch first inning.

Athletics complete the sweep with a 7-0 shutout over the Tigers

https://www.athleticsnation.com/recaps/99785/athletics-complete-the-sweep-with-a-7-0-shutout-over-the-tigers

Going for a three-game sweep tonight, the Athletics took on the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Jose Morales, the 22-year-old righty made his fourth career start against Casey Mize for the Tigers.

The A’s jumped out in front in the bottom of the first after a base hit by Nick Kurtz and a walk by Shea Langeliers. Tyler Soderstrom singled, driving in Kurtz. At the end of one, the A’s led 1-0.

Rafael Devers powers Giants to blowout win vs. Cubs

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings-nl-west/99951/giants-cubs-scores-recap-rafael-devers-matt-chapman-heliot-ramos

Yesterday, when the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2, I tried to blend tempering expectations with celebrating success. It was a remarkably easy thing to do, given the circumstances: the Giants had won their third straight game in a row, looking exceedingly competent along the way against the NL’s top two teams, yet still possessed a playoff odds number that began with a “0.”

Shohei Ohtani strikes out 9, Dodgers finish sweep of Reds

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/102466/shohei-ohtani-strikes-out-9-dodgers-finish-sweep-of-reds

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani had his longest pitching start yet with the Dodgers and struck out nine in a 5-1 win over the Reds on Wednesday night in Los Angeles to complete the sweep.

Of the 20 three-game series this season at Dodger Stadium, 10 have ended in sweeps, seven in the Dodgers’ favor. The four-game winning streak by Los Angeles — their longest in eight weeks — has them two games up on the Padres in the National League West.

Who else knew the Reds were the last team in the MLB to not get swept. I learned on Tues when they were talking about the Wed game.

spending the weekend w/ our neighbors at Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks. nice and peaceful lake right outside, good mountains. crisp fall like weather.

https://visitadirondacks.com/about/adirondack-park

Created in eastern upstate New York in 1892 as one of the first Forever Wild Forest Preserves in the nation, the Adirondack Park is a unique wilderness area and National Historic Landmark. At 6 million acres, it is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States. The state of New York owns approximately 2.6 million acres, while the remaining 3.4 million acres are devoted to forestry, agriculture and open space recreation. The Adirondack Park is not a National Park - there's no fee to enter and the park doesn't close at night, nor is it a state park, a common misconception. It's also the largest National Historic Landmark in the United States, covering an area larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and the Great Smokies National Parks combined.

If you haven't heard Rob and Andy's interview of Ron Rivera - check it out here:

https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/the-california-golden-bearcast-chatting

Ron is transparent in terms of what he does and doesn't do, the administrative stuff that has been lifted off of Justin Wilcox's shoulders, and what his go-to Yoghurt Park order is.

On one hand, there are some mild surprises in the starters' list. On the other hand, I wouldn't read too much into "starters". Wilcox loves to rotate guys in and we have deep benches for rotation this season. Mild surprises are from younger guys taking major steps forward rather than anything punitive against veterans. The only major surprise is Ruffins.

If younger guys are taking major steps forward, it could portend a subtle, yet highly effective change in the program. We shall see.
