Anyone want a box full of very good Sci-fi books from the past? Free.

I'm moving, and since I doubt I will re-read, willing to give them away, all paperbacks.

Huh, accents on this page are now yellow, which is hard to read against the light background. That includes the "Author" tag next to SGBear and URLs.

Expand full comment

I was gonna note this, but then figured someone prob would have beat me to it. So searched for "yellow" and was brought here!

I can feel the eyestrain building!

Maybe today can be No Links Wednesday (just text that we can cut-and-paste)?

We changed them yesterday because the previous color was too dark and difficult to distinguish from text. This one has overcorrected, so we'll probably change them again.

Change them to Joe Roth blue

I'm in favor of that if it works without too much contrast/unreadability. For now the yellow has been changed to a dull gold (metallic gold, per the University's official color palette). You may have to refresh for the color to update.

Expand full comment

It still seems like two hues of the same color. It needs more contrast.

I was thinking the same thing. Now it's been changed to blue and I think it looks much better. Better contrast, better readability.

Struck by the number of articles about how "even liberals" are "being realistic" about COVID - from the likes of David Leonhardt, one of the many notionally liberal pundits / doctors who's been consistently wrong about the trajectory of this disease. Anyway congratulations to the pundits, everyone really is just throwing up their hands and hoping for the best.

Aug 31, 2022·edited Aug 31, 2022

As someone who has been "vaxxed and relaxed" for some time now, I ask genuinely: what kinds of policies do you think should be continued and would make a realistic difference in the trajectory of the disease?

Expand full comment

Honestly, at this point just keep paying for shots and tests so people can get them if / when they need them, which is pretty minimal and therefore - of course - under threat of defunding. If folks have decided that they're okay with the potential downsides of getting Covid and aren't interested in masking to avoid an airborne disease etc., I don't see the point of trying to force the issue.

I think a lot of this discourse is more about people who made a virtue of being masked / getting vaccinated trying to create a permission structure which means that they can stop doing that without being cast as bad / irresponsible / anti-science. It's kind of an intra-elite discourse, now that I think about it.

Expand full comment

Don't disagree with that. I'd support more funding for shots/testing . . . and also for better ventilation in public buildings.

Unfortunately I think a lot of the debate got wound up over mask mandates, which seem to have middling effectiveness at best.

Expand full comment

I think there was at least 4 broad trends that did in masking:

1) mixed messaging in the early stages

2) people losing their shit about having to wear them (whether oppositional defiance, "but God needs to see my face," etc

3) self-appointed momma bears losing their shit about mask requirements in schools

4) lack of clarity over value of KN95 type masking (I'm inclined to think they work, or at least they've worked for my family, but I think that's been lost) - this may be a corollary or extension of item 1.

I'm exercising some degree of caution insofar as I have hypertension and have had pneumonia and bronchitis and "mystery lung rattles," but even so I've been traveling a bit and going to concerts and such. It's been really interesting, living in what was a generally pretty masked-up area, to see how quickly everyone dropped it this summer. My daughter was telling me that even the kids who were wearing KN95s during the omicron surge aren't bothering with anything this first week of the school year, so we were talking about how she'll decide when to stop wearing the basic paper masks at school. I figure at this point I'm mostly going to stick to the serious masks in airports / boarding planes, especially when I go to see my mother (3 heart attacks, on dialysis)

Expand full comment

Outright terrible messaging in the early days . . . the CDC literally told people not to wear masks.

I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand, I think good masks (KN95) do work to protect the wearer pretty well. People who are nervous (for whatever reason) about catching Covid should use them. On the other hand, the public mask MANDATES don't seem to have worked much at all, mostly because to make them work on a public-health level you need everyone to follow the rules, and . . . yeah, see above. As a result, I find the arguments over mask mandates to be pretty useless. Much better to focus on vaccines and airflow improvements if you want to improve current policy.

Expand full comment

I think part of what's going on here also is that as a family we appear to be among the last of the people we know to not have caught the 'rona - if I'd had it recently, I'd probably be behaving differently now, to be honest.

I caught flack in the Johnson thread for saying we would struggle against Davis and I strongly believe that to be true.

OL, big issue; QB, new one is likely better.

I like Plummer but he is in a new system with a bunch of new players so we will have to see how well they perform under pressure for the first time playing together.

Expand full comment

Agreed, C...I do like Plummer...however, until we see whether these skill position players can win 1 on 1 battles and make plays, dunno how anyone can predict a 21+ point win with any confidence v. a fired up Davis team that would love nothing more than to beat Cal.

Based on what we’ve seen the past 2 years, I suspect Musgrave’s pro-style O is also too complicated for these kids, which impacts execution. Say what you will about Dykes, but his O was easy to learn and wildly successful.

Expand full comment

The offense will come out looking flat and we will probably have a couple of stalled drives that we go 3 and out.

The game will be closer than Cal fans would like at halftime. Probably something like 21-13 with Cal in the lead.

We will pull away in the 4th and win 31-20.

Wilcox doesn't blow anyone out, and the Aggies will be fired up. Game will be a dogfight.

WaPo's David Von Drehle has an interesting theory. He interviewed Trump several times and added the observations from his interview of Stephanie Grisham.

Trump doesn't really read any documents and may be dyslexic. He keeps them as a prop. Von Drehle implies that he's stolen top secret paper so that he can continue to use them as props/bragging rights.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/08/30/trump-documents-papers-disorganized/

Expand full comment

I'll concede Von Drehle's points. Trump is dyslexic and uses the mountains of paper as props. It doesn't make Trump innocent of violating the law. Nor does it excuse his pathological neediness in the face of his (past) responsibilities as the most powerful man in the free world.

If anything, it's more evidence that the current GOP is a collection of unserious and malicious clowns masquerading as politicians. Every last one of them should be thrown in federal prison (with certain noted exceptions; e.g., L. Cheney and A. Kinzinger) for seditious conspiracy.

> These are not ho-hum documents. They are highly secret.

> Trump did NOT assert declassification or executive privilege over the documents.

> The FBI seized double the amount that were voluntarily returned by Trump

> Top secret documents were not in the storage areas

> This is obviously a criminal investigation. Trump is almost certainly going to be indicted.

There was a WaPo interview with someone who has studied the GOP over decades. The upshot of the interview is that the GOP doesn't admit mistakes. They simply quietly back away from the crazy and leave them to twist. It goes back to at least McCarthy, maybe further. But it gets repeated because this is how the GOP stays relevant and doesn't permanently fall into minority status.

What you've observed is consistent with that history.

In a battle of the two worst teams in baseball, the A’s came out on top, beating the Washington Nationals 10-6 in the first game of his must-watch series.

Well, the pitching wasn’t there but the bats sure were, racking up 13 hits and six walks en route to the 10 run outburst, their most runs scored in a game since before the All-Star break. And since this was Oakland’s first time visiting Nationals Park, they are undefeated at the stadium!

Was at the game yesterday. In addition to a bad result, it was incredibly slow and boring. I think it was still 0-0 in the 4th with like 4 total hits...and we were already like 90 minutes in.

Left just before the 7th-inning stretch (Pads had already pushed across three more runs in top of 7th). Was already 2.5 hours long. Had a bike ride home ahead of me, got home by 10...no regrats (We're the Millers reference)

And I just found out that had I stayed, the Giants would have made it even more frustrating, getting to within one run with a 2-out HR in the 9th. Before losing.

Three errors (at least) at first base. Two (not great) throws from Crawford that Belt prob would have dug out. One of which extended an inning and allowed a 2-run HR.

And the game was 3:35, so wouldn't have got out of there til 10.

Gavin Lux’s three RBI night leads Dodgers over Mets

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/8/30/23330000/gavin-lux-three-rbi-dodgers-over-mets

Fans may have shown up to Citi Field on Tuesday night hoping to see Timmy Trumpet perform Edwin Diaz’s entrance song live, but were forced to settle for the Gavin Lux show. The Dodger second baseman drove in three runs including the game winner as the boys in blue took game one from the Mets, 4-3.

There was no lack of excitement to begin this one. With no outs in the bottom of the first and Brandon Nimmo on first base, Starling Marte dropped down a bunt which appeared to be rolling foul. Andrew Heaney grabbed the ball before it reached foul territory and in attempting to make a play, flipped the ball into right field allowing Nimmo to come all the way around to score. Heaney buckled down and used two strikeouts (and some help from the Mets on the bases) to escape the inning without allowing any further damage.

The Dodger offense came to life in the third inning. Austin Barnes led the inning off with a single, Mookie Betts followed with a double, and Los Angeles had runners on second and third base with no outs. Trea Turner and Freddie Freeman were unable to bring the tying run home, but Taijuan Walker provided the Dodgers with some help. Walker walked Max Muncy to load the bases and hit Joey Gallo with a pitch to bring in the tying run.

Expand full comment

The Dodgers just continue to roll, a product of their very good and deep and versatile roster (a concept a surprising number of MLB teams continue to not grasp). Nevertheless, I have complete confidence in Dave Roberts to meddle with pitching and the lineup to the point of falling short in October.

Expand full comment

If there is a problem with the pitching it will be because Buehler is out, Gonsolin has his forearm injury (he claims it's minor), we'll see if Kershaw's back goes out again (he is back on Thurs), and Almonte (pretty dominant since his pickup) looks like he may be done. No, that's not me - I guess one I could share: haven't lost a fight since I was 13, and that was a "friendly" match with someone on the wrestling team. Lost twice, super annoyed.

Ok, let's start in the southwest corner and go to Young's Dairy just outside Dayton (https://youngsdairy.com/). You can eat deep fried cheese curds, see some goats, and most importantly, eat homestyle ice cream. This is delicious, but a big part of the experience is being at the farm, so even if they shipped their ice cream, I would not try to buy it here (in California).

Next, we'll try Graeter's of Cincinnati. This is also homestyle ice cream; I'd equate it to Fenton's. My favorite flavor from them is the black raspberry chip, but Elena's blueberry pie is also delicious, with a fantastic story: https://www.graeters.com/cones-for-the-cure They do ship nationwide and can be found in the Bay Area, but because I see them as a Fenton's (local favorite, except Golden Oso), I typically do not buy their ice cream here.

Now, let's go to my hometown, Cleveland. The overwhelming favorite is Mitchell's (https://www.mitchellshomemade.com/), not to be confused with the one in San Francisco. The Bing cherry chocolate chunk is a good mix of tangy and sweet, and if you're there at the right time, the campfire s'more has a smokiness that you shouldn't miss out on.

Less famous, but very special, is Mason's Creamery (https://www.instagram.com/masonscreamery/). This, to me, is one of the great things about the Cleveland food scene. There's demand for elements from different cultures (in this case, different Asian food references), and the cost of living allows people to take a chance on a small business. They don't serve ice cream year-round, and I'm not sure if the ramen side of the business is year-round, but it's nice that there's a space for them to do this!

Ok, now we're heading to central Ohio. Mardi Gras Ice Cream (https://news.wosu.org/news/2017-04-12/ice-cream-with-a-sprinkle-of-india-from-an-immigrant-in-columbus) is not open year-round, so you need to time your visit right. There are the classic flavors one might expect in a suburban strip mall, but there are also delicious Indian flavors like rose or cardamom. Definitely read that WOSU article for more of the background.

I'm gonna eat lunch, but I'll come back to talk about Jeni's.

what does "Homestyle ice cream" mean?

Hmm in my mind, it's ice cream that you could make at home (and picture old-timey ice cream churns), very "America's heartland" imagery and flavors

Please tell me there’s a skyline ice cream flavor somewhere in Ohio.

Ha, I haven't encountered one yet, but why not!?

If Salt and Straw were in Ohio I bet they'd have it.

Ok, Jeni's.

Jeni's has classic flavors as well as interesting or unexpected flavors, but thus far, they haven't veered into gimmicky. They are also credited/blamed for breaking through the $10 barrier for a pint. What sets them apart for me is the mouthfeel. I took a photo of one of their napkins in 2017 and will quote it now:

--TEXTURE & BODY: Texture is the fineness (or grittiness) of the ice cream between your tongue and the roof of your mouth. The body is the bounciness or thinness of the ice cream. Ours has a dense buttercream-like body and texture that's unique in the world of ice cream. We call it American hard body ice cream, which is meant to be rolled into a ball and served hard.--

I like to joke that Jeni's is responsible for MY American hard body. But truly, when you push against it with your tongue, it pushes back. Another distinguishing factor of Jeni's is that the ice cream base uses cream cheese rather than egg yolk. Her reasoning is that she can focus on the milkiness rather than any egg flavor.

Jeni's started in North Market in Columbus and did experience some growing pains when they expanded beyond the city. There was the infamous listeria outbreak in 2015, for instance. And, while I'm grateful to be able to get pints in the Bay (either at some grocery stores or through mail order), nothing beats Jeni's from a scoop shop, and I really wish they'd open one near me.

Don't especially like Graeter's except for their limited time Peach. That one is phenomenal.

At lunch, my coworker who grew up in Cincy reminded me that what sets Graeter's apart is their chocolate chip. It maintains structural integrity, but when you bite into it, it melts away; it's not a solid block of frozen chocolate fossil.

No 3 has this thing where he can tuck the edge of his ear into itself. It can stay there for a while. Stephen Colbert can do the same thing and showed it on one of his shows.

Yeah, looks like it was created by a bot. I think Cal could get better designs by running a student competition on campus and paying the winner in Fat Slice coupons
