My family's first machine was a TRS-80 Model II with an 8" floppy and a Daisy Wheel printer. The first computer that I owned was the C64. I loved to program on that thing. And the games - Infocom's games (eg, Zork series, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and Broderbund's Lode Runner were undefeated.

First laptop- an old AST 386 MS-DOS laptop that used a trackball. Bonus for 10 year old me- someone left full versions of a ton of games on the 300MB HDD: Doom, Duke Nukem 2, Wolf3D, etc.

Favorite laptop is an IBM Thinkpad 600x. Got it right before I started college and used it for about 10 years despite it being out classes even when I got it. Dual booted Win98SE and XP with pretty nice DOS compatibility when the retrogaming itch got to me. Accidentally damaged it in a fit of rage (was mad at family member about something and slammed the table that the laptop was on- RAM retention clip kept popping after that which would blue screen me) but still love that thing. Retired it when I moved across the country for residency

[XC] Cross Country Begins 2023 Campaign At USF Invite

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/30/cross-country-begins-2023-campaign-at-usf-invite.aspx

BERKELEY – California cross country will toe the line at its first meet of the 2023 season on Friday afternoon at the USF Invitational in San Francisco. The Golden Bears will cross the Bay Bridge for the 30th-annual invitational hosted by the Dons at Lindley Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The women's 6,000-meter race will kick things off at 2 p.m. PST with the men's 8,000-meter competition set to follow at 3:30 p.m.

The USF Invitational is a staple of the Cal cross country slate, with the Bears' history competing at the meet spanning over 20 years. Cal's men have claimed seven meet titles and five individual victories over the years, while the women have tallied six team victories and five individual first-place finishes. The most recent team titles were collected in 2019 when then-first year head coach Bobby Lockhart's Bears saw both the men's and women's squads sweep the team titles.

[MSOC] Cal Battles FDU, Dartmouth To Open Home Slate

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/30/mens-soccer-cal-battles-fdu-dartmouth-to-open-home-slate.aspx

BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Edwards Stadium to play its home opener against FDU on Friday and then host Dartmouth on Monday.

Admission to both games is free.

The Golden Bears (0-0-2) opened the 2023 season on the road, posting a pair of 1-1 ties against nationally ranked opponents UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest (see below). UNCG had been ranked 10th in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, while Wake was ranked 18th in the preseason. In the United Soccer Coaches week one rankings, UNCG is out of the top 25 and Wake – in part due to teams like UNCG dropping out of the upper part of the poll – is ranked 16th. Cal received 16 votes in this week's poll – tying UCLA – and sits just two spots outside the top 25. The Bears are right behind UNCG, which received 17 votes and is the first team outside the poll.

[VB] Cal Hosts Home Opener Against Portland State, Southern Utah

https://calbears.com/news/2023/8/30/volleyball-cal-prepares-for-home-opener-against-portland-state-southern-utah.aspx

BERKELEY – California volleyball (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12) is set to make its regular-season home debut following a three-game win streak to open the year and claim the Army Invitational tournament title. The Golden Bears dropped just one set last week and clinched their best start since 2019, after which senior Tara DeSa earned all-tournament MVP; junior Annalea Maeder and freshman Maggie Li also earned spots on the all-tournament team. Now, Cal will welcome Portland State (2-1, 0-0 Big Sky) on Friday at 7 p.m. PT and Southern Utah (2-1, 0-0 WAC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. to Bear Territory in hopes of extending that streak and building further momentum as the Bears barrel toward Pac-12 play.

The Bears are 6-3 all time against the Vikings. Last year, Portland State finished 18-13 and reached the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. They are proving to be a threat behind the service line, ranking 13th in the nation with 2.70 aces per set and 18th with 27 total aces.

A double steal initiated by Elly de la Cruz broke-up the pitching duel between Logan Webb and Hunter Greene in the 5th inning of the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

Patrick Bailey’s throw to second wasn’t intended to nab de la Cruz at secondbase but play along with his opponent’s shenanigans, and hopefully give Thairo Estrada a chance to nab the runner breaking for home and take the edge off the Reds’ scoring threat.

If you so happened to have caught the recap of Tuesday’s game, it’s a lot of the same on Wednesday. Some driving forces changed around a bit, but once again the Dodgers thumped the Diamondbacks, securing a 7-0 victory and a series sweep.

The Dodgers manhandled the D-Backs once again, scoring six runs before the end of four innings, with eight out of their nine hitters reaching base safely at least once.
