Despite our absurdly hot weather I went for a walk late yesterday afternoon. In the parking lot of the park I went to I saw a car with a license plate holder that said Mean Green and North Texas. I wished I'd had paper and pen so I could leave a gloating remark.

My friend introduced me to her fiance this weekend. He was a Oklahoma fan who lived in Dallas but he somehow knew Cal was located in Berkeley. He didn't know where Berkeley was located in California, but I was really surprised and impressed that someone knew Cal = Berkeley

Expand full comment

I find it interesting that someone who knows that Cal=Berkeley doesn't know Berkeley's location, which implies not knowing it's close to San Francisco or Oakland. How old is this person?

Meh. I think local bias is pretty common. Ask any average west coast non-DBDer to point on a map where the University of Indiana, University of Wisconsin, or FIU is and be more specific than the state.

As a trial, I asked my wife where these place as on a map. Her guess for Indiana was Purdue. The response for Wisconsin was "who knows that?". The response for FIU was "Who cares? Who's asking? Why are you bothering me?"

I think there's truth in what you say. I also think folks above a certain age are more likely to know Berkeley's general location within California, which is what I was trying to impart.

I think as sport fans, we hear the campus names a lot and some are often not major cities. Ann Arbor, Chapel Hill, Tuscaloosa, Norman, Oxford, Urbana-Champaign, Palo Alto, etc. I actually don't know where Tuscaloosa and Norman are within respective states.

I'm always a little flummoxed as to why this festival exists at all, given that one of its 10 Principles is Leave No Trace. With 70,000 attendees, it seems that a significant percentage do not adhere to Leave No Trace.

Just how does 70,000 people leave no trace even if you have staff who clean up after those who can't or won't? I'm reminded of Lake Tahoe trash after 4th of July this year.

Expand full comment

I have mixed feelings about Lake Tahoe. Love the lake, hate the fact that it would seem one needs to kiss someone or some business' ass just to dip one's toe in the water. With all that commercial and private ownership of lakefront property, maybe those owning entities can afford the clean up. Just venting and, yes, I think the Lake needs preserving.

It's generally the state and local park locations that end up being a dump after major holidays.

It would have done well to make it a National Park, but, too late.

Even in perfect weather, the whole Gawddamned thing sounds absolutely miserable to me. A desolate, almost apocalyptic landscape, with major traffic in and out…the horror stories of Burners hauling their garbage out off the Playa only to absolutely trash the nearby Mom and Pop gas stations (who admittedly make good $$$ from those same asshats loading up on supplies, but still)…personally, I’m just loving this year’s schitt show.

I got a Burner buddy and I always tell him “F-ck your Burning Man!” Of course, the artsy ex-Mrs. Jimmy C loved this sort of thing, even though she never attended.

Expand full comment

Pack it in, pack it out. Some folks don't understand what it means. When I backpacked that meant I'd often wait until I got home to offload empty and squashed containers.

Burning Man organizers could do better with the Leave No Trace principle. If they pick up after the folks who leave trash behind, how do they accomplish their mission without using massive numbers of trash bins? At what point do they pick up and use garbage storage to transport waste?

Other former Bears:

Spencer Lovell transferred to a pretty bad Kansas team. He is second string.

Jack Plummer had a pretty Jack Plummer Day - 18/31 for 247 for 3 TD and 1 INT. He ran 9 times for 51 yards. It was enough to squeeze out a come from behind 39-34 win over Georgia Tech.

Jackson Brown - who transferred to Pitt and had rumors that he thought he deserved playing time - was not on the 2-deep depth chart. We may see him again when Cal plays Pitt

History of the World Part 2 (Hulu, 7/19, WNB)

Maybe I was in a bad mood. Maybe I'm just cranky. There's something off about the production. I loved History of the World Part 1, Space Balls, and other Mel Brooks movies - but this was bad. Poorly written. Some actors seem to just mail it in like it was a SNL skit. I made it about 20 minutes and gave up. Lot of jokes that were 3s and 4s and an occasional 6 (a smile), but nothing that got me to laugh out loud.
