I broke the same wrist two years in a row ages 14-15, sliding into the same second base of the same ball field during Babe Ruth League games.

tore the same Achilles twice!

first time HAG was there and drove me to ER when we were playing basketball before 25th HS reunion.

the next time (6-ish years later) i was skiing in some powder/trees and ran into some immovable object w/ my ski tip.i got to experience the legendary ski patrol hospitality and a got free ride down in the stretcher.

Me too. First time was playing basketball and it was about an inch above the anchor to the heel, around 2008. Next time was last March playing basketball again. This time torn off the heel.

Every year I clear our hillside of weeds. It's a strip of sloped ground that is approx. 140 feet long and varies in width from 8 to 12 feet depending on location. In previous years I used a gas-powered line trimmer (aka weed whacker). This year I have mostly eschewed using that tool because of the various effects on me and the environment.

Managed to give myself a face bleed and black eye while trying kneeboarding for 1st time. Lesson: don’t sit on board too long after letting go of the tow line - board will shoot out from under you to hit face. Obviously I was not a physics major.

I did 66 push ups in my first set the other day. Forty two in my second set. Not bad for a man of my advanced age.

Apparently Auburn fans hate being called Barners:

You could also draw a picture of a dog in slinky clothes and call it "Whore Beagle", but that seems too crude.

Law breaks record, Mariners break A’s

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/9/4/24236463/oakland-athletics-seattle-mariners-lawrence-butler-brent-rooker-jp-sears

The music had to stop at some point. We celebrated good times at the Coliseum two nights in a row, but the walk-off streak ends there as the Oakland Athletics were blown to pieces by the Seattle Mariners.

However, with the end of one streak came the continuation of another as sophomore sensation Lawrence Butler not only extended his hit streak to 14 games, he set a new franchise record, going nine consecutive games with an extra-base hit. Whenever it seems Law’s peaked, he climbs a bit higher and continues to surprise the baseball world.

For the last handful of months, as the San Francisco Giants flirted with and then emphatically maintained their mediocrity, I heard a common refrain from the fanbase. Just play the kids, they’d shout. At least it would be entertaining.

I haven’t always disagreed.

Angels pummel Bobby Miller in a blowout Dodgers loss

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/9/4/24236422/bobby-miller-home-runs-dodgers-angels

Bobby Miller’s fastball struggles continued as the Dodgers were blown out by the Angels 10-1 to wrap up this roadtrip.

There is never a lost cause and every team fights until the end, but minutes into this affair, the writing was on the wall on a favorable night for the Angels, and very little could be done to interfere with it.

25/year for a 31 year old? I guess that's fine. Unless they're willing to pay Snell, gonna have to find a couple more pitchers.

Expand full comment

$25m/year is not bad for a 6 WAR player, but it rightly implies he'll have some drop off as he ages. But this this is a like a covered call strategy. You're not going to beat the deeper pockets of LA and SD by playing that downside game. You need guys who can surprise on the upside.

Cal programmers, please create an Oscars-style seat filler app for Grand Slam tennis tournaments. All of the early empty great seats during the early part of each session is killing me-- so many people would pay an extra surcharge on top of grounds pass to have access to those seats (with promise to give them up to actual seat holder upon arrival). Better for fans, better for players, and better for the tournaments-- there is money to be made there.

i rather liked this. i hear that it is not back for a 2nd season, but maybe it is.

there seems to be a lot of press about "small groups of haters" putting pressure to cancel show? is is because it is is bad? black lead charaacters? too much wokeness?

i cant really seem to tell .. nor could i figure out what was so offensive other than a mediocre series to most.
