Waldichuk soars, A’s can’t score

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2023/9/5/23860917/oakland-athletics-toronto-blue-jays-ken-waldichuk-zack-gelof-jordan-diaz

The good news is Ken Waldichuk is making significant progress, pitching his best outing of the year. The bad news is the A’s still lost and are on the brink of ruining their winning September record.

After working his way to a solid 4.60 ERA in August, along with 30 strikeouts and 13 walks in 29 1⁄3 innings, the rookie upped his game and pitched six strong innings of shutout ball. The last time he hit that milestone was in his last start of the 2022 season when he throw seven shutout innings and made A’s fans believe they had a burgeoning ace. This year has been a step back for the young pitcher but tonight showed his career and potential aren’t written in stone yet. Over the past couple months, as he’s been allowed back into the rotation, Waldichuk’s performed at an acceptable level with flashes, like tonight, of what the A’s hoped they when they traded Frankie Montas to the New York Yankees 13 months ago.

Clayton Kershaw fighting it, Marlins out-slug Dodgers

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/9/5/23860673/marlins-home-runs-clayton-kershaw-velocity-dodgers

The Marlins hit four home runs to the Dodgers’ one, including two off Ryan Yarbrough in the eighth inning to break a tie in a 6-3 win over Los Angeles in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night in Miami.

Jesús Luzardo held the Dodgers bats in check, allowing but a couple of runs in a very solid quality start, lasting longer than Clayton Kershaw, who allowed three runs (and two home runs) in five innings.

Giants bats come alive at the expense of everything else

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/9/5/23860636/giants-cubs-recap-patrick-bailey-wilmer-flores-joc-pederson

I blame you. I blame me. I blame all of us.

We’ve been sitting here begging and praying and doing voodoo and burning various herbs (hopefully with Tim Lincecum invited) in hopes that the San Francisco Giants would remember how to hit a baseball again, and we forgot to add the qualifier that they needed to keep remembering how to pitch and field. We found a genie in a lamp and in his best Robin Williams voice he gave us three wishes, and we asked for a million dollars, the ability to run really fast, and for our dead dog to come back to life, and the genie gave us those things, laughed at us for not asking for more wishes, and then disappeared forever.

I mean, the Braves will smoke us in the playoffs if we get that far, but it is pretty sweet to be in a playoff race after sucking so hard the past few years!

They are. Bellinger was such a great pickup. I was hoping buffoon Farhan would sign him…instead he gave a part time/platoon DH a $20M QO and signed a chronically injured LF in his mid-30’s to a $45M deal. ;-)

Bellinger has certainly played his way into a big deal now! Most heartening to me though is to see the Cubs finally finally finally develop a homegrown ace in Steele. That has been a really long time coming

Bellinger is finally healthy after dislocating his shoulder during the NLCS in 2020. Good for him. Was an electric player when he was right. Gold Glove defense in the OF and at first.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Seems fairly straight forward:

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, was sentenced on Tuesday to 22 years in prison for the central role he played in organizing a gang of his pro-Trump followers to attack the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power.

Mr. Tarrio’s sentence, stemming from his conviction this spring on charges of seditious conspiracy, was the most severe penalty handed down so far to any of the more than 1,100 people charged in connection with the Capitol attack — and was likely to remain that way, given that no other defendants currently face accusations as serious as the ones he did.

Until now, the longest prison term connected to Jan. 6 had been 18 years. That sentence was issued last week to Ethan Nordean, one of Mr. Tarrio’s co-defendants. The same sentence was given in a separate case in May to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of another far-right group, the Oath Keepers militia, who also was found guilty of sedition in connection with the storming of the Capitol.

Comet Nishimura, discovered on August 13th will emerge from being a hidden object to one easily visible to the naked eye by September 12th, it's closest approach to the Sun.

It is projected to reach magnitude 1.8, slightly brighter than Polaris, between the 12th and 17th. I hope to see it soon in one of my scopes on the next clear morning. Check for it approximately one hour before sunrise when it is visible.

I consider it an omen for a successful Bears' season.
