Leaving for Lisbon for work in a few hours. Going through IAD. Anyone have any restaurant suggestions in Lisbon? Going to try to always eat outdoors if possible. Though it looks like rain M-F while I'm there, which kinda sucks. I've got Friday afternoon - Sun to explore.
Had a conference that was supposed to be in Lisbon in 2019 but postponed due to the pandemic. Hosted virtually by a European online conference company in 2020. So I never made it to Lisbon.
This event was first scheduled in Mar 2020. Then rescheduled optimistically in Mar 2021. Then when Seoul didn't get rid of their quarantining for Sept, it was moved to Lisbon.
in 2019 the Boston conference publicized the coming year's Lisbon conference. (I got the year wrong in the previous message.) They showed a lot of pictures of Lisbon telling how wonderful it was. Oh well.
Talked to my brother last night who's on vacation. He got a text from his next door neighbor who said it was 116 at their house in the Sierra foothills the other day.

Been tracking this one all week, it's very doubtful it will make landfall as anything more than a tropical depression (only 2 hurricanes have made landfall in CA recorded history), but it's interesting to watch as a potential peek into the future as the ocean continues to warm.
Hoping it dumps a bunch of rain though, Saturday is day six of 14 of no outdoor watering for 40% of Southern California with multiple wildfires raging and triple digit temps for over a week. It'll be in the low 80's for the 7 day forecast following Saturday....can't wait.
Hurricane Kay will more than likely break up before it reaches SoCal but I do think we will see a fully intact hurricane reach SoCal within our lifetime.
I think we will begin to see tropical storms/depressions reach SoCal and probably a couple fully intact hurricanes reach SoCal in our lifetime. The combination of sea level rise and sea level warming make it more likely. I was at a FEMA meeting in Reno last month and I brought this up to FEMA reps and they kind of just shrugged me off.
The FEMA meeting I brought this up in was a closed door meeting to discuss potential impact and threats of climate change on tribal lands in SoCal.
While everyone in the room focused on earthquakes and fire, I brought up the threat of prolonged heatwaves and a hurricane. Both of those were glossed over so everyone could continue to discuss wildfire.
Totally agreed, there was a climate report a couple years back that forecasted LA having Cabo's climate by 2050. If that happens there will be plenty of rain, but a shrinking barrier to stopping storms. A strong eastern Pacific storm season combined with an El Nino year could be catastrophic. Long Beach and points south will probably get it the worst, but a society built with flexible wooden structures probably won't stand up well to hurricane forces winds. This was in the back of mind as a reason for moving out of a home that was ~6ft above sea level and 200yds from the back of a very large marina
I can assure you we are not ready to capture as much of the rain water as possible. SoCal has built all of its infrastructure to move storm water to the ocean as quickly as possible.
The previous two Kings Charles had rather, shall we say, turbulent reigns.
Charles I was executed at the height of the English Civil War (1649).
His son, Charles II, lived in exile for about 9 years before the Restoration in 1660. Charles II died in 1685 four days after suffering an apoplectic fit.
It's been 337+ years since England, Scotland. and Wales has had a monarch named Charles. I say England, Scotland. and Wales because Ireland didn't join the UK until 1801 and then most of Ireland seceded in 1922.
New PM just referred to him as Charles III, so maybe.
Interesting to see the automatic changes made - Dukedoms of Edinburgh merges with the crown, title of Prince of Wales is now vacant, William is automatically Duke of Cornwall.
Queen Elizabeth has always looked pretty spry to me. But when she was visited by Liz Truss as the new PM, I thought "oh no, she looks really awful". Well, she has apparently taken a turn for the worse and her family has been called to her side. May her final moments be filled with grace.
Apparently BBC1 has halted all regular programming until 6pm. Sounds grim.
What a tumultuous couple years for the UK: EU withdrawal, the (probable) passing of the Queen. It will be a very different landscape in 2023 than it was in 2015.
My sentiments exactly. I will add that it's likely that none of us who frequent the DBD have ever seen the coronation of a new British monarch, not even an old timer like me. That, at least, will be interesting.
CBS scoreboard has a live play by play feature which is pretty good, gives you the down, distance, and a text description of each play. On cbs.com ncaa scores live. Every FBS/Power 5 team is covered. I follow this when I can't see a game on TV or stream it,
Hope that it takes less than 20 minutes to find a stream of the game. Trying to find a stream for one of the P12N regional networks is quite the endeavor. It should be easier to find this week's game since it's on the main P12N channel.
The Giants lost 7-4 to the Dodgers on Wednesday…but, like, who cares? The season isn’t really about win-loss records, us vs them, or those arbitrary run totals anymore. September 2022 is just the start of the 2023 preseason for our San Francisco Giants. Yeah it’d be nice to beat the Diamondbacks in the division standings, but who looks at those anyway?
Honestly, embarrassing for the Dodgers that this game was tied in the 8th inning. Taking two-games out of three instead of a series sweep? The heat’s getting to them.
Max Muncy and Justin Turner each hit three-run home runs to lead the Dodgers over the Giants 7-3 in Wednesday’s series and homestand finale at Dodger Stadium.
After a great renewal of the rivalry in last year’s season series that extended to the first playoff matchup between these two storied franchises, this season things kind of took a step back which doesn’t necessarily mean these were just regular games by any means, but it hasn’t been exactly the same.
What pretty much everyone expected mostly happened. After a 107-win season, and a division title that ended the Dodgers reign over the West, the Giants have taken a step back in 2022, and simply haven’t been able to put up a real challenge for back-to-back division titles, while the Dodgers have mostly maintained their recent pace.
Nope, not at all. Tedford panicked and started an injured Longshore over Riley. I think we win that game and a few more that season with Riley as our starting QB. Probably end up 8-4 with Riley starting the rest of the season.
Seems like there's definitely enough room in there to pick up 2 more wins with a healthy Riley starting (and a lot of talent around him). Maybe more than that.
I try to block out as much of the second half of that season as possible but the two games that seemed like we would have a won with Riley at QB that I vividly remember are ucla and Big Game. USC was close but I doubt Riley plays well enough in those elements to beat USC. What were our other two conference losses? ASU and UW? I can’t remember how close those games were. I can’t believe we got swept by all the other California schools that season.
UCLA and Big Game were close enough to win. USC also close, but who knows how that goes in the bad weather. I think that ASU game was within reach too . . . we were ahead but handed the game to ASU with 2nd half interceptions.
And UW was surprisingly not that close, but I wonder how motivated the team was at that point. A lot of guys seemed to be checked out. If they hadn't just suffered a string of dispiriting losses, I think they play better.
Ah yes, the UW game where we kicked off to start _both_ halves. I remember Longshore played pretty well in that game, so that probably still would have been a loss.
