Go Bears!!! Beat the Rebels!

Berkelium97's avatar

That sounds divine

Turning this into bacon for breakfast sammiches; over medium egg, bacon, avocado, oven dried tomatoes, and arugula, on brioche.

I have a sister 9-years older than I who attended UNLV during the Tarkanian years and took me to UNLV MBB games. This was my first experience with sports fandom. Hey Reb holds a lot of sentimental value because of this. Still, there is no denying that Las Vegas has a host of better mascots to choose from that would be neutral or representative of different perspectives: Scorpions, Tarantulas, Horny Toads, etc.

Terence's avatar

I went to the UNLV basketball camp during the height of the Running Rebs - Larry Johnson, Stacy Augman, Anderson Hunt, Greg Anthony, Travis Bice, Moses Scurry - it was so much fun and a true core memory for me being in Vegas as a 16 and 17 year old.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I would prefer the UNLV Degenerates myself.

Is this the same sister that married the founder of the Oath Keepers?

Peetyjay's avatar

Good one! The UNLV Meth-heads would also be an appropriate theme here. Different sister...it was actually my brother who married Stewart Rhodes' sister.

goldenone's avatar

Yup. I won't be at the game due to a wedding but I will be at the Arizona game. I'll have to figure out a way to stream the UNLV game on my phone without looking like I am.

For those of you that are members of the California Alumni Association, the current issue of California Magazine has a fantastic article regarding The Play. It focuses on the officials who made the final call confirming the touchdown, especially the head referee. What happened in the referee's locker room afterwards was, to me, particularly interesting.

heyalumnigo's avatar

What a great article. We're lucky the head official had the mantra, Don’t get involved unless you’re absolutely sure, Don't guess.

I still want to know who the one fan was that was in the huddle and the first one to run out with his hands in the air. I always referred to him as members only jacket man.

Berkelium97's avatar

People who chew loudly, especially with their mouths open

Terence's avatar

like the pirate with the steeringwheel attached to his testicles

SGBear's avatar

That high pitched squeeeeee that kids aged 3-6 at play seem to emit. I know it's supposed to be a joyful sound, but it makes me want to run away.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

somehow i like that noise. i like 2-3 girls of that age running around squealing in delight (or not). reminds me that life is simple

i was hoping we would have 3 girls, but 2 has been great.

DC Trojan's avatar

I can't tell you how relieved I was that neither of my daughters made that noise.

MoriBear's avatar

ditto...our daughter will be loud on occasion – usually aping noisier friends – but it's rate. we were at a pool last weekend and there was a 3-yo(?) who didn't get what she wanted and just started shrieking.

worst noise with daughter was when she was teething. she'd cry at a frequency (spectral, not temporal) that seemed to match the natural frequency of my skull. I could feel blood flowing around my brain.

rocksanddirt's avatar

That's how you tell that genetics works. She can make only your ears bleed.

MoriBear's avatar

for me, it's the opposite. seems that people don't hear their kids cry (at least that's my experience looking at other kids cry in restaurants, etc.), but do get annoyed with other people's kids.

DC Trojan's avatar

the sound of two blocks of styrofoam being rubbed together.

AndyPanda's avatar

I'm old enough to remember chalk boards, and the noise streaking the chalk could make. White boards were a service to mankind.

goldenone's avatar

Ahhh!

That reminds me of something worse, fingernails scratched on a chalkboard.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Annoying noises:

Stanford “band” attempting to play “music”.

USC band just droning on and on with some dumb song.

The sound of trumps voice.

DC Trojan's avatar

excuse me, that's TWO dumb songs

AndyPanda's avatar

Teams who don't want to hear the songs can at least curb Fight On and prevent Conquest; just make plays and win the game going away!

Justbear's avatar

-cancelling headphones

Peetyjay's avatar

There is only one correct answer here: Dental Drill!

Cugel's avatar

...annoys (that's a song!)

ak_A_bear's avatar

Plays for the A's.....for better or worse.

paulie's avatar

The vacuum cleaner. Even though it’s a necessity I hate that sound with a passion

SGBear's avatar

Do you run away, attack, or just bark at it?

Tangtpt's avatar

Those car alarms that have 3 or 4 different sounds.

Oski Disciple's avatar

I can do without people blasting their car stereos so loud that you can hear them in your house.

Judge has thrown out court case brought by Trump against Hillary Clinton and a bunch of other people he doesn't like. Judge Middlebrook savages Alina Habba's filing, essentially calling it terrible lawyering and political theater that has no place in his court. The core of the case was dismissed with prejudice.

The governors of Texas and Arizona have sent over 10,000 migrants to DC and NYC as a petty political stunt. I mean, you could hand them over to ICE and save some money, but I am sure that politics counts more than doing your job.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/washington-mayor-declares-public-emergency-155230276.html

GoldenSD81's avatar

I am sure this stupid political stunt is only increasing the number of migrants to their states as now migrants know they will get a free bus ride to NYC or DC.

DC Trojan's avatar

I wonder - and I'll never find out in my own life - whether it's the cost, the acreage, or the wall that makes it a "family compound" rather than a house.

Berkelium97's avatar

Whenever I think of "compound" I think there's some cult-like activity going on there

GoldenSD81's avatar

I feel like it isn’t a proper compound unless it has at least 1 armed guard and a security gate.

goldenone's avatar

My boss had a family compound in Nantucket which consisted of several houses and beachfront property, surrounded by fencing. I don't know if there is an exact definition but they called it a compound.

DC Trojan's avatar

that absolutely sounds like a compound

goldenone's avatar

Sounds like they always reconcile after these spats.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Was he not wearing a cup?

If not, then he deserves this.

goldenone's avatar

NO MORE SHIFT!!! MLB has voted.

Back to the old mantra of "hit 'em where they ain't!"

AndyPanda's avatar

We'll see how the implementation of the pitch clock goes, but I'm very much in favor of it. Not a fan of banning the shift at all; let the defense deploy as they choose. I've seen lots of shifts, near shifts, 3 infielders, 5 infielders, all the managers' choice of tactics for the situation. Never been bothered by it.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Also the stepping off of the rubber/two pick offs thing is also dumb. Manfred ball. Almost as crazy as Calvinball.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Good riddance to the shift.

paulie's avatar

I feel like instead of banning the shift, the ball needs to be deadened a bit to make hitting homers less of an option to overcome it

paulie's avatar

also very much in favor of a pitch clock and making the batter stay in the gd box

Berkelium97's avatar

Brutal loss for LA. Their OL couldn't pass protect of run block, Stafford threw some of his usual dumb interceptions, the D-line couldn't pressure Allen, and the secondary got carved up (and yet Jalen Ramsey kept mouthing off to Bills receivers on the occasional pass breakup).

goldenone's avatar

They should have stuck with Jared instead of McVey demonizing him.

rocksanddirt's avatar

yes. Their problems were not QB based, and only a generational pro QB talent would have made them go away.

Justbear's avatar

I traded away Josh Allen on Wednesday and I had to face him yesterday in my fantasy league. I regret it already.

DC Trojan's avatar

Premiere League matches postponed this weekend. Oddly enough horse-racing is still on, so I suppose the oiks realized they were supposed to show that they know their place.

AndyPanda's avatar

It's not like very many goals are going to be missed. And gambling, which is the only reason we still have horse racing, never stops.

DC Trojan's avatar

🙄

Last weekend's results:

Man Utd 3 Arsenal 1

Brighton 5 Leicester 2

Aston Villa 1 Man City 1

Brentford 5 Leeds 2

Chelsea 2 West Ham 1

Newcastle 0 C Palace 0

Nottingham Forest 2 AFC Bournemouth 3

Spurs 2 Fulham 1

Wolves 1 Southampton 0

Everton 0 Liverpool 0

Also you can bet on any sport in the UK, it's not like they need horse racing for that

Cugel's avatar

Terrible Leeds loss 😢

DC Trojan's avatar

I was not expecting them to have a couple of shitty games so quickly, they're fun to watch when it all comes together

Cugel's avatar

Oh man, did the Rams look bad.

GoldenSD81's avatar

You would think if your defense was able to generate 4 turnovers the game would be close.

SGBear's avatar

Elsewhere in college

SGBear's avatar

Oregon State vs. Fresno State is a pick-em

SGBear's avatar

Michigan is a 52 point favorite over Hawaii. Yeesh.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Hawaii is really bad this season.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Vandy housed Hawaii...never good to get housed at home by Vanderbilt...sorry hag!

SGBear's avatar

USC is only an 8 point favorite over Stanfurd. Wut?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Stanford is always good for a puzzling home win per year...I’m on the SC hype train, tho, given Caleb Williams’ familiarity with Riley’s O...Jordan Addison is really f-ing good, too. Think SC covers that late.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, I’m of the same thought as well. I think SC wins and covers.

DC Trojan's avatar

I assume there remains skepticism about the SC defense.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I am equally skeptical about Stanford defense and offense.

goldenone's avatar

Their team speed last year was like molasses, not sure why because they used to have guys like Ty Montgomery and McCaffrey.

CruzinBears's avatar

History has shown that even when there is a big underdog it's usually a close game IIRC

SGBear's avatar

UCLA is about a 50 point favorite over Alabama State. Alabama State is 2-0 after recently holding off Division II Miles College Golden Bears who were playing with their third string QB.

SGBear's avatar

CU is a 18 point underdog to Air Force.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Karl Dorrell not going for it last week after TCU started rolling was silly...

goldenone's avatar

Sonny has lost a bit more hair but otherwise looked on the sidelines like he still enjoys a plate of chicken spaghetti.

Terence's avatar

What about Karl Dorrell with a mustache?

SGBear's avatar

Texas Longhorns are about 20 point underdogs to Bama. Don't matter. Everything is gonna be alright alright alright.

I'd support a You See Berkeley ad that had Captain Kirk (Pine), Sulu (Cho), B'Elanna Torres (Dawson), and Sulus (Cho). Pass on Takei since he transferred to UCLA.

This made me open the twitter link to see. And boy howdy, is that one big ugly head....too too too big.

SGBear's avatar

Ask any guy and he'll tell you that he's not beneath begging for a little head.

GoldenSD81's avatar

The Lee Corso viral clip from last weekend was great!

Corso: “not tonight honey, give me (the) head”!

AndyPanda's avatar

I'm just glad they brought Sparky back. Just a pitchfork isn't as good.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree. I hate the spork and prefer they just stay with Sparky.

El Assico this weekend. Haven’t seen Iowa St play this year but I’ll just assume this will be another 7-3 -assic.

Interesting developments in Ukraine. UKA has broken through Russian lines around Kharkiv and the Russian front is in threat of being rolled up. The "we're attacking Kherson" info ended up drawing all available Russian reserves to that region which left Kharkiv wide open. Brilliant stuff

GoldenSD81's avatar

Lots of rain and strong winds today. Power lines and lots of tree branches down.

AQI is pushing 400 in my area. This coming off a run of 100+ degree days. I'd gladly exchange the smoke for the heat.

MoriBear's avatar

what is "my area"? here in San Francisco, it's 53, but reading that Hurricane Kay is supposed to swirl Tahoe fire smoke our way this weekend.

MoriBear's avatar

ugh...yeah you're right there! hope things don't get too bad...

I went by the British Embassy on my run this morning. The number of flowers left out front is a small fraction of those left when Diana died all those years ago. There were probably a dozen TV cameras around the area but not many people stopping by. TV seems to be making more of it than the general public. Nobody was standing in line to sign the condolence book.

Queen Elizabeth 2's "Royal Cypher" is on everything in the UK. I bet they won't be able to replace them all with Chuck-the-Third cyphers before he dies.

Saw a story on the local news about her local sports outings. She went to a UNC football game at Maryland back in the 50s and went to an O's game in the pre-Camden Yard days. Props to her for that.

MoriBear's avatar

is that a cricket reference? and if it is, what does it mean in this case? (she didn't get her century, but came close)

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I don't know the origins, but I learned it from a British friend, so it seemed apropos

MoriBear's avatar

quoting from the above link

2. When someone has just died or is about to die, if you say that they have had a good innings, you mean that they have lived for a long time and have had a good life. Note: An innings is a period in a game of cricket during which a particular team or player is batting. Lord knows, I've had a good innings and I'm in pain, Hannah. I want to go.
