For the second day in a row, the Detroit Tigers pitching staff came to play against a previously hot A’s offense.
Yesterday it was Brant Hurter putting the Tigers bullpen on his back; today it was Ty Madden coming in relief of Beau Brieske — A.J. Hinch’s opener for the evening. Both Madden, Brieske and the rest of the Tigers staff left the A’s offense with more questions than answers stifling them for just a singular run for the second day in a row. Detroit won the game 9-1 and took the series as a result.
Padres starter Joe Musgrove had been on autopilot through the first three innings and change. He attacked the zone with a bevy of curveballs and cut-fastballs and breaking balls, retiring the first ten Giants batters he faced. He struck out lead off man Grant McCray on three pitches. He K’ed the side in the 3rd, needing just 35 pitches to stroll through three scoreless frames. Again McCray came up empty on a 2-2 curve, this time leading off the 4th—Musgrove’s 6th strikeout in 3.1 innings. Over the airwaves, Jon Miller mused that the quality of the right-hander’s offerings might be no-hit stuff.
LOS ANGELES — On one of the hottest days ever at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers found an oasis in trade deadline acquisition Jack Flaherty, who pitched 7⅓ scoreless innings to beat the Guardians 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Also, in OT, the Lions O cut through the Rams D like a hot knife through butter. David Montgomery slashed through LA's defense for 45 yards on 5 carries and the winning score.
I did some sniffing around. Apparently, fans and alumni are a bit confused to the reason why as she was likeable and relatively successful and achieving her goals - which just leaves speculation to reasons.
Leading reasons are a) they have a new Chancellor and he wants to put in his guy since her contract expires in 2025. If that's the case, it's weird timing
2025 isn't that far away. Given that knowledge about her contract expiration date, it raises questions about who is a likely candidate for the job and their relationship to the new chancellor.
#18 FCS team UC Davis defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 36-22 in unconvincing fashion. TAMU-Commerce was a Division II team until 2021. This does not make our win against UC Davis look any better.
If Boise State could defend a kick return, the Broncos win. This was another example of the effect of a P4 depth chart vs a Gang of 5 one, even a good G5 one. Sometimes the difference is how good your 25-30th guys are vs theirs. And for the second week in a row, if you have an issue, even if you have dominated most of the game, Tez Johnson is not someone you want to see when Oregon needs a game-breaking play.
SAN DIEGO – A monster day from ACWPC All-Americans Roberto Valera and Max Casabella nearly got the No. 2 California men's water polo team out to a 4-0 start to the year, but following a 19-9 Sunday-morning win over Cal State Fullerton, the Golden Bears fell to No. 13 Pepperdine 21-20 in sudden victory overtime to close out the Triton Invitational.
BERKELEY– The California women's soccer team earned its fifth straight win Sunday afternoon topping San Diego 3-0 behind another multi-goal performance from the nation's leading scorer, Karlie Lema.
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – The California women's golf team returns to the course next Monday through Wednesday for the first time since its record-breaking 2023-24 campaign. The Golden Bears are set to begin a new era in the ACC under head coach Sofie Aagaard at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M.
It would do my little heart glad if former Pac-12 teams became disruptors to their respective new conferences, so much so that old line institutions begged the networks to put the Pac-12 back together.
It's not gonna happen, but a guy can dream, right?
I was proudly wearing a Cal t-shirt when I went on a walk yesterday afternoon. No Go Bears, but a woman asked if I’d gone to school there. She had gone there too but apparently not a big sports fan. I mentioned a big win the day before and her husband realized it was a big deal. We then had a short discussion about joining the ACC.
From the Washington Post's obituary (at the very end) -
Interviewers sometimes asked Mr. Jones if he took advantage of his forbidding Vader delivery to, say, scare away muggers. He admitted to the Times that he pretended to be Vader only once, while using a CB radio on a cross-country drive.
“The truck drivers would really freak out — for them, it was Darth Vader,” he said. “I had to stop doing that.”

They miss Aaron Donald.
Rams were out of gas. That's a tribute to the Lions' game long effort.
Indeed. It was very visible that the Rams were spent. Even the Rams offense on the sidelines looked spent.

This week's SEC shorts is an absolute banger and they did Cal good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejQ77InvJrQ
I was going to post this. I loved the Vandy pimp strut at 5:01.
On my drive back from Auburn, I saw the Cal billboard in Atlanta on I85 North that said "Thanks for the ACC invite". That made me happy.
It would do my little heart glad if former Pac-12 teams became disruptors to their respective new conferences, so much so that old line institutions begged the networks to put the Pac-12 back together.

Cal and Florida State set kick-off for 1 pm Eastern / 4 pm Pacific
https://calbears.com/news/2024/9/9/football-cal-florida-state-kickoff-time-set.aspx
Edit: obviously that's a typo on my part. It's 7pm Eastern / 4pm Pacific. I'm a dope
Gonna be on either ESPN or ESPN2 (they'll decide next week).
TV coverage is so much better in the ACC than it was in the Pac.
1 PM Eastern, 4 PM Pacific? Are you sure?
Will the rotation of the Earth reverse itself before September 21?
I think it's 1pm in Eastern Hawaii
Okay, that I'll buy.

Initiating Contact/Targeting an Opponent
1. No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.
2. No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul.
On #1, Cal dodged a bullet. Uluave's hit should have been called as targeting. Helmet-to-helmet contact occurred after he dropped the crown.
On #2, Cal got jobbed by the ref in the booth. Either that or it was a make-up call for #1.
I ran into Dave Flemming, who was waiting for his ride out of town after the game, and asked him about those calls. He said the same.
Seems weird to be in agreement with a Stanfurd guy when it comes to football.
Felt that way at the time, and replays confirmed both assessments as you documented.
At the game seeing the replays I also thought Uluave should've been ejected.

Wow. What a loss.
Absolutely. A couple under the radar things he was in that I liked were A Family Thing where Robert Duvall played his half brother and Sneakers.
Watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of The Bear on the flight back. It's so good so far. Can't wait to binge the rest.
